Notes: The Raman spectra of hydrogen-bonded crystalline HCONH2 and HCOND2 have been measured up to 10 GPa at 300 K in a gasketed diamond anvil cell. The frequencies of the in-plane intermolecular stretching mode which characterizes the hydrogen bond along the zig–zag chain increase with increasing pressure with a slope (dν/dP) of 11.1 cm−1/GPa, and its slope becomes steeper, to 19.2 cm−1/GPa, at about 5.0 GPa (=Pc). The frequencies of the intramolecular ND2 stretching mode decrease with increasing pressure at all pressure range except around Pc where they show an increase of 20 cm−1. It turns out from these results that (1) the hydrogen (deuteron) bonds along the chain direction become stronger in response to the pressure, and their increasing strength are more developed above Pc, and (2) the other type of hydrogen (deuteron) bonds which bridge the chains to make their planar hydrogen-bonded network are weakened around Pc. The pressure-induced phase transition at Pc is discussed by focusing on the behavior of two types of hydrogen bondings and the effect of the interplanar interaction.

Notes: Brillouin scattering was measured at room temperature in liquid and solid CS2 in a diamond anvil cell up to 70 kbar. In the liquid phase, the acoustic velocity and the refractive index were determined as a function of pressure: The former allowed us to determine the equation of state, ρ=0.206 P0.40+1.144 (1 kbar≤P≤13 kbar) with density ρ in g/cm3 and pressure P in kbar, and the latter was well fitted by the Lorentz–Lorenz relation yielding the pressure-insensitive polarizability of 8.20×10−24 cm3. In the solid phase, the pressure dependence of longitudinal- and transverse-acoustic phonon velocities was determined up to the appearance of black CS2 which was formed at pressures above 70 kbar, and the high optical and elastic anisotropy of crystalline CS2 is discussed.

Notes: This paper outlines the status of a 6-GeV synchrotron radiation designed at RIKEN. This facility consists of a main storage ring, a booster synchrotron, a 1.5-GeV preinjector linac, positron injection linacs, and others. The electronan GeV. The storage ring has a circumference of 1069.2 m and 7-m-long straight sections for insertion devices. The lattice of the main ring is a Chasman–Green-type one and has 36 periodicity. The low emittance (εx=8.2 nm rad) and large dynamic aperture are expected even with field errors and misalignments of magnetic elements. Three years of a preconstruction research and development period and 5 years of construction period are scheduled.

Notes: High-pressure Brillouin scattering measurements have been carried out in orientationally disordered (OD) phases I and I′ of solid HBr, which yielded the first determination of acoustic velocities for all directions, the refractive index, the polarizability, the density, adiabatic elastic constants (C11, C12, and C44), bulk modulus, and the elastic anisotropy as a function of pressure up to 7 GPa and at room temperature. The I→I′ phase transition in solid HBr was confirmed on the discontinuous pressure dependence at P=2.3 GPa for average errors of the least-squares fit by the analysis of in situ Brillouin spectroscopy. These elastic properties of solid HBr are compared with recent results in the OD phase I of solid HCl. We suggest that the form of the potential energy function for intermolecular forces in solid HBr is similar to that in HCl. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Raman spectra of hydrogen-bonded molecular solid H2S have been measured up to 23 GPa at 300 K in a gasketed diamond-anvil cell. In the orientationally disordered phase I between 0.47 and 11 GPa, the symmetric stretching mode ν1 shows a red-shift in frequency (dν1/dP=−10.1 cm−1/GPa ) and a dramatic broadening with pressure. At about 11 GPa, the antisymmetric stretching band ν3 appears at the higher-frequency side of ν1. Near this same pressure five low-frequency vibrational modes also appear and show pressure-sensitive features. These results indicate a pressure-induced phase transition near 11 GPa. This new solid phase, which persists to at least 23 GPa at 300 K, seems to be the same phase as previously found above 3.3 GPa at 25 K.

Notes: We have observed spin-glass freezing in a nominally pure single crystal of the S=1 linear-chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4)(NENP) by direct current (dc), linear alternating current (ac), and nonlinear ac susceptibility measurements. A possible origin of this spin-glass freezing is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Modulation-induced mode partition in distributed feedback lasers was investigated by photon statistics and bit-error-rate measurements. Its origin is explained for the first time in terms of the transient index changes and the resulting corrugation dephasing. We also propose device screening and desirable parameters for error-free operation.

Notes: The chemical state of sulfur on (NH4)2Sx-treated InP(001) surfaces has been studied by high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We find three kinds of chemical states of sulfur (S2p3/2 lines at 161.2, 162.0, and 163.4 eV) on the sample treated at RT. It is suggested that they correspond to sulfur in phosphorus sites (in the second layer of the InP(001) surface), to sulfur bonded to indium on the first layer, and to elemental sulfur on sulfide, respectively. One (S2p3/2=162.0 eV) of them becomes predominant with long-time exposure to atmosphere at RT. Upon annealing the sample at 400 °C, the 163.4 eV line disappears, while the lines at 162.0 and 161.2 eV remain on the surface. A model of the treated surface is presented.

Notes: Emission life of small Ba-impregnated thermionic cathodes suitable for use in TV tubes is investigated systematically. Cathodes are covered with an Os layer to enhance the emissivity. They have an unusual emission life in that the emission current decreases gradually with time and then drops abruptly. The early gradual decrease in emission at high cathode temperatures is caused by the phase change of the Os layer to OsW2. A linear relationship is found to exist between the logarithm of the lifetime and the reciprocal of the cathode temperature. This life end is believed to happen after the end of the reduction reaction between BaO and the porous W body and after ceasing replenishment of the low work function Ba+-O− monolayer on the metal surface. A formula for the emission lifetime is derived from the assumption that the rate determining step is the Ba diffusion inside the pellet. Emission lifetime τ is shown to be given by τ=Ad2 exp(E/kT), where A is a constant, d is the pellet thickness, and E is the activation energy of Ba diffusion. This relation is confirmed experimentally.

Notes: A rapid change in the detailed edge electron density profile during positively biased limiter experiment is obtained with high temporal resolution of ∼20 μs using a laser blowoff lithium beam probe technique in HYBTOK-II tokamak [IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. PS-19, 885 (1991)]. The transient change in the electron density profile and the movement of the position where a steep density gradient is formed are experimentally observed. The temporal behavior of the electron density profile correlates well with reductions in the biasing current and Hα emission in the scrape-off layer, and the suppression of electrostatic fluctuations near the edge of the core region.
