    Description: The extended-MHD NIMROD code [C. R. Sovinec and J. R. King, J. Comput. Phys. 229 , 5803 (2010)] is verified against the ideal-MHD ELITE code [H. R. Wilson et al. , Phys. Plasmas 9 , 1277 (2002)] on a diverted tokamak discharge. When the NIMROD model complexity is increased incrementally, resistive and first-order finite-Larmour radius effects are destabilizing and stabilizing, respectively. The full result is compared to local analytic calculations which are found to overpredict both the resistive destabilization and drift stabilization in comparison to the NIMROD computations.

    Description: We report on the fabrication of large-area, vertically aligned GaN epitaxial core-shell micropillar arrays. The two-step process consists of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching of lithographically patterned GaN-on-Si substrate to produce an array of micropillars followed by selective growth of GaN shells over these pillars using Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy (HVPE). The most significant aspect of the study is the demonstration of the sidewall facet control in the shells, ranging from {1 1 ̄ 01} semi-polar to {1 1 ̄ 00} non-polar planes, by employing a post-ICP chemical etch and by tuning the HVPE growth temperature. Room-temperature photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence, and Raman scattering measurements reveal substantial reduction of parasitic yellow luminescence as well as strain-relaxation in the core-shell structures. In addition, X-ray diffraction indicates improved crystal quality after the shell formation. This study demonstrates the feasibility of selective epitaxy on micro-/nano- engineered templates for realizing high-quality GaN-on-Si devices.

    Description: The linear, collisional, constant- ψ drift-tearing mode is analyzed for different regimes of the plasma- β , ion-skin-depth parameter space with an unreduced, extended-magnetohydrodynamic model. New dispersion relations are found at moderate plasma β and previous drift-tearing results are classified as applicable at small plasma β .

    Description: A high performance RF (radio-frequency) switch based on the phase change effect in germanium-telluride (GeTe) is described. Thermal pulses applied to a separate independent thin film heating element for 0.1–1.5 μ s toggles the switch in a latching fashion. Being non-volatile, no power is required to hold the switch in the on- or off-state. State-of-the-art solid-state RF switches currently in use have an on-state loss of 1 dB; here, we demonstrate an inline phase change switch with a low on-state resistance showing over a frequency range of 0-40 GHz an insertion loss of just 0.1–0.24 dB.

    Description: We investigated the structural and optical properties of GaAs 1−x Sb x /GaAs heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs (001) substrates for Sb concentration up to 12% by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence. The correlation between our structural and optical analysis revealed that compositional fluctuations induced localized states which trap carriers at low temperature. Under low excitation power, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra are composed of two competing peaks in the temperature range of 30–80 K. The lower energy peak is associated with transitions from localized states in the band-tail of the density of states while the higher energy peak corresponds to transitions from free carriers. A model based on a redistribution process of localized excitons was used to reproduce the S-shape behavior of the temperature dependent PL. Reducing the growth temperature from 500 °C to 420 °C suppressed the S-shape behavior of the PL indicating a reduction in compositional variation.

    Description: Crystallization and amorphization phenomena in indirectly heated phase change material-based devices were investigated. Scanning transmission electron microscopy was utilized to explore GeTe phase transition processes in the context of the unique inline phase change switch (IPCS) architecture. A monolithically integrated thin film heating element successfully converted GeTe to ON and OFF states.     Notes: In the classification of finite-dimensional modules of Lie superalgebras, Kac distinguished between typical and atypical modules. Kac introduced an induced module, the so-called Kac module V¯(Λ) with highest weight Λ, which was shown to be simple if Λ is a typical highest weight. If Λ is an atypical highest weight, the Kac module is indecomposable and the simple module V(Λ) can be identified with a quotient module of V¯(Λ). In the present paper the problem of determining the composition factors of the Kac modules for the Lie superalgebra sl(m/n) is considered. An algorithm is given to determine all these composition factors, and conversely, an algorithm is given to determine all the Kac modules containing a given simple module as a composition factor. The two algorithms are presented in the form of conjectures, and illustrated by means of detailed examples. Strong evidence in support of the conjectures is provided. The combinatorial way in which the two algorithms are intertwined is both surprising and interesting, and is a convincing argument in favor of the solution to the composition factor problem presented here.

    Notes: Classical mathematics is used to derive an algorithm for expressing the roots of a general quintic equation in terms of its coefficients. This algorithm requires the solution of two quadratic equations and one cubic equation as well as the evaluation of two infinite series, namely, one Jacobi nome and one theta series.     Notes: Kac distinguished between typical and atypical finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the Lie superalgebras sl(m/n) and provided an explicit character formula appropriate to all the typical representations. Here, the range of validity of some character formulas for atypical representations that have been proposed are discussed. Several of them are of the Kac–Weyl type, but then it is proved that all formulas of this type fail to correctly give the character of one particular atypical representation of sl(3/4). Having ruled out, therefore, all such formulas, a completely new extension of the Kac–Weyl character formula is proposed. The validity of this formula in the case of all covariant tensor irreducible representations is proved, and some evidence in support of the conjecture that it covers all irreducible representations of sl(m/n) is presented.

    Notes: The basic spin difference character Δ″ of SO(2n) is a useful device in dealing with characters of irreducible spinor representations of SO(2n). It is shown here that its kth-fold symmetrized powers, or plethysms, associated with partitions κ of k factorize in such a way that Δ″⊗{κ}=(Δ″)r(κ)Πκ, where r(κ) is the Frobenius rank of κ. The analogy between SO(2n) and Sp(2n,R) is shown to be such that the plethysms of the basic harmonic or metaplectic character Δ˜ of Sp(2n,R) factorize in the same way to give Δ˜⊗{κ}=(Δ˜)r(κ)Π˜κ. Moreover, the analogy is shown to extend to the explicit decompositions into characters of irreducible representations of SO(2n) and Sp(2n,R) not only for the plethysms themselves, but also for their factors Πκ and Π˜κ. Explicit formulas are derived for each of these decompositions, expressed in terms of various group–subgroup branching rule multiplicities, particularly those defined by the restriction from O(k) to the symmetric group Sk. Illustrative examples are included, as well as an extension to the symmetrized powers of certain basic tensor difference characters of both SO(2n) and Sp(2n,R). © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
