Notes: Magnetic properties of RTiCo11 (R=Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) compounds with the ThMn12 structure were investigated in the temperature range from 4.2 to 1400 K. The Curie temperatures of this series exceed 1000 K and the Co atomic moments were found to take the values ranging from 0.99 to 1.80 μB, which depend on R. The easy magnetization direction of RTiCo11 was found to be axial(c(parallel)) for R except being planar for R=Sm and Er. This result suggests that the R sublattice with a positive Stevens factor demonstrates planar anisotropy. The Co sublattice anisotropy constant was estimated to be K1 = 7.5 × 106 erg/cc at room temperature from measurements on YTiCo11. By subtracting K1 of YTiCo11 from K1 of DyTiCo11, the anisotropy constant of the Dy sublattice was obtained to be 5.7×106 erg/cc. Spin reorientation was also observed in RTiCo11 with R=Pr, Nd and Dy, which are considered to be an axial to planar one with increasing temperature.

Notes: An intense pulsed beam of CH3Cl in the ||111(approximately-greater-than) state without velocity selection was focused using a 2-m electrostatic hexapole field. The beam intensity was estimated to be ∼1×1013 molecules pulse−1, which is much greater than the similar beams in the earlier study of Gandhi et al. by at least two orders of magnitude. The beam had a 3-ms pulse width and was focused with an angular divergence of 0.7 mrad. The improvements in beam intensity and in the divergence of the beam can be mainly ascribable to the efficient pumping of the hexapole field through the cylindrical electrodes, which enables us to employ the helium seeding to have the fast stream velocity, the narrow distribution of velocity, and the aerodynamic effects. Those factors altogether made the velocity selection of the beam unnecessary.

Notes: Effects of interface structure and oxidation state were studied in stacked magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) structures with top and bottom antiferromagnetic layers to obtain optimum resistance and high tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratios for read heads. The roughness of the NiFe surface and the Al coverage were significantly improved by introduction of O2 surfactant gas on the Ta-seed-layer surface, which increased TMR ratios of the MTJ with low resistance area (RA) products of less than 10 Ω μm2. Furthermore, it was found that avoidance of Ni oxidation and Co oxidation at the tunnel barrier interface is essential to obtaining high TMR ratios, and that a good Al coverage and Fe–oxide formation may enhance TMR ratios when Fe-rich magnetic materials are used. For the top-type and bottom-type structures, a TMR ratio of 12%–17% with RA products of 6–7 Ω μm2 was obtained, which provides sufficient performance for read heads. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Sm(Fe1−xMx)12 ternary compounds based on the tetragonal ThMn12 structure where M is Ti, Si, V, Cr, and Mo were investigated. M atoms have a preference for site occupation. Ti atoms occupy the 8i or 8j site and Cr atoms occupy the 8i site. Curie temperatures on Sm(M,Fe)12 compounds are around 590 K except for the SmMo2Fe10 compound (Tc=483 K). The SmTiFe11 and SmSi2Fe10 compounds have a high saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy.

Notes: Stimulated rotational Raman scattering (SRRS) of a transversely excited atmosphere-CO2 laser in para-H2 was studied with a liquid-N2-cooled multiple-pass cell. Line-tunable output from 13.7 to 17.2 μm was obtained by changing CO2 pump lines. Threshold pump energies required for SRRS were measured to be 0.9 and 1.5 J for the 9P(20) and 10P(20) CO2 lines, respectively. Above the threshold, the Stokes output energies for the 10-μm band pumping increased in proportion to the increase of the pump energies, while the increase of the Stokes output for the 9-μm band pumping was limited. Para-H2 pressure dependence of the Stokes output energy showed that the Stokes gain became constant for pressures above 250 Torr at 100 K.
