    Notes: A multichannel motional Stark effect polarimeter system, which is capable of simultaneous measurement of a radial electric field, has recently been developed on the JFT-2M. The diagnostic can measure the polarization angle at 18 radial locations, which cover a region between just inside from the magnetic axis and the outboard edge of the plasma. By viewing two neutral beam lines (one is co-parallel to the plasma current and the other is counter parallel) simultaneously and near tangentially to the toroidal magnetic field from only one spectroscopic instruments, it provides the best sensitivity in radial electric field measurements with good spatial resolution. The magnetic field pitch angle is also measured with the smallest uncertainty. Preliminary data for L-mode plasma has been obtained. It is found that the statistical uncertainty of the magnetic field pitch angle and radial electric field is about 0.1° and 4 kV/m, respectively, with a time resolution of 10 ms. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method for quantitative analysis of piezomodulation spectra of a thin film on a substrate, including the internal reflection in the system, is presented. This method is applied to Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) derivatives on glass substrates. A uniaxial stress was applied along the symmetry axis of the film. The spectra were measured in the region from 1.5 to 2.4 eV in three configurations; transmission, reflection from the film side, and reflection from the substrate side. The optimum Lorentzian parameters and their changes due to the stress are determined by the least-mean-square fit. The microstructures and electronic states of the LB film are discussed from the stress effects. The very small feature, which is hardly identified in the absorption spectra because of the large Frenkel exciton band, is attributed to a charge transfer (CT) excitation.

    Notes: Small angle x-ray scattering is performed on the crystals of polyethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene up to Porod's region. The scattering intensity I obeys a power law for the magnitude of the scattering vector q for large values of q: I∼q−α. The exponent α is smaller than 4 given by Porod's law. If it is assumed that the folded chain crystals and the extended chain crystals have the fractal surface, the fractal dimension is from 2.2 to 2.8 depending on the crystallizing condition.

    Notes: Dissociative excitation of acetylene induced in e-C2H2 collisions was investigated by measuring the Doppler profile and its angular dependence from H*(n=4) at a resolution of 0.0065 nm. The translational energy distribution and the angular difference Doppler profile were calculated. The Balmer line was unpolarized. There are three major dissociation processes for H*(n=4) from C2H2; their threshold energies and translational energy distributions are (1) 20.8, 0–2 eV, (2) ∼30, 3–5 eV, and (3) 35–40, 6–8 eV, respectively. Component 1 showed a clear anisotropy: the asymmetry parameter b is 0.5±0.1 and the anisotropy of atomic emission Jp is 0. Thus, component 1 should be produced by predissociation through Rydberg states converging to the (2σu)−1 state. The decrease of b from the theoretical maximum is due to arbitrary direction of the momentum transfer vector and a relatively long lifetime of the intermediate excited states. Components 2 and 3 are also anisotropic and b〉0.

    Notes: The angular dependence of Doppler profiles of atomic fluorescence produced in electron impact dissociation of molecules was simulated in consideration of the effect of the anisotropy of dissociation and the "polarization'' in magnetic sublevel. The asymmetry parameter b and the polarization of the electric vector of emission Jp are key parameters of Doppler profiles for the excited atom of known translational energy distribution. The difference of two Doppler profiles taken at 90° and 45°, which is denoted as angular difference Doppler profile, is shown to be useful to estimate these two key parameters.

    Notes: The Doppler line shapes of atomic nitrogen emission (4p 2S1/2–3s 2P3/2: 4935.12 A(ring)) were measured precisely with a Fabry–Perot interferometer at a resolution of 0.015 A(ring). The translational energy distributions of N* were calculated and found to be similar with those of N+ and N(HR). There are three major components of N*; their peaks of the translational energy distribution and threshold energies are (1) 0.1–1.3 and 23.0 eV, (2) 2.8–3.0 and 29 eV, and (3) ∼ 5 and 38–44 eV, respectively. The first component is produced by dissociative excitation through Rydberg states converging to the C state of N2+.

    Notes: Resonant two photon ionization (R2PI) spectroscopy was used to obtain detailed spectroscopic information on the neutral and cation ground states of the jet-cooled molecules V2, VNb, and Nb2. By recording photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectra, their adiabatic ionization potentials were determined to be 51 269(5) cm−1 (V2), 51 554(10) cm−1 (VNb), and 51 359(10) cm−1 (Nb2). In VNb, we used different ionization routes to determine that the splitting between the Ω=0 and Ω=1 spin–orbit components of the X 3Σ− ground state was 230(3) cm−1. In the case of V2 and VNb, two thresholds were observed in the PIE spectra recorded via Ω=1 intermediate states. We were thus able to assign the ground states of V+2 and VNb+ as having 4Σ− symmetry, with second-order spin–orbit splittings of 20(3) and 82(3) cm−1, respectively. A simple model was applied to calculate the locations of the 1Σ+ and 2Σ+ states which are responsible for the second-order spin–orbit splitting of the neutral and cation ground states, respectively. One-color R2PI spectroscopy was employed to determine the bond dissociation energy of VNb, the result D00=30 562(10) cm−1 being obtained. The implications of our measurements regarding the relative bond strengths of the neutral and cationic dimers are discussed.

    Notes: Electron-impact dissociation of HCl for the formation of excited hydrogen atoms (n=4) has been investigated by measuring Doppler profiles of the Balmer lines and their angular dependence at a high optical resolution using a Fabry–Perot interferometer. The translational energy distribution (TED) and the angular difference Doppler profile were obtained. There are five major dissociation processes for the formation of H* (n=4). The threshold energy and the TED peak of the five components are (1) 19 and 2.5; (2) 25 and 7.2; (3) 29 and 1.7; (4) 36 and 5.1; and (5) (approximately-greater-than)40 and 8–12 eV, respectively. Formation of components 1 and 4 is anisotropic and parallel with respect to the electron beam. Component 1 should be produced by predissociation through the Rydberg states with the Σ symmetry converging to either the 4Σ or 2Σ− state and then those converging to the A 2Σ+ state. The asymmetry parameter (β) of component 1 was determined to be about 0.62, and the intermediate excited state for the formation of component 1 has a lifetime equal to the rotational period. Component 2 would be produced through the Rydberg states converging to the 2Π state. Component 3 would be produced through high-lying doubly excited Rydberg states converging to either the (4)2Π or (4)2Σ+ state. Component 4 should be produced through doubly excited repulsive states with the Σ symmetry.

    Notes: Since 1994 at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences HIMAC, the NIRS Penning ionized-gauge ion source (PIGIS) has so far been used for radiotherapy with carbon beams and for basic research with several ion species. The source can produce beams from H2 to Fe with a charge-to-mass ratio of between 1/7 and 1/2. It is a hot-cathode type with a filament, of which the lifetime is on the order of a week and the cathode on the order of 1 month, under a low-duty pulsed operation (≤0.5%) synchronized to the ring operation. This PIGIS can produce highly charged ions: for example, 1 e mA of Ar7+ or 500 eμ A of Si5+ ions (by sputtering) under the typical arc power of 5 kW in peak. This article describes the present status of the NIRS-PIGIS. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A novel two-beam method is proposed and applied for the first time, to characterize photorefractive damage (PRD) in a LiNbO3 quasiphase-matched (QPM) wavelength converter. In the proposed method, irradiation light from a Ti sapphire laser and a broadband probe beam from an erbium-doped fiber amplifier are coupled into a LiNbO3 QPM waveguide. The PRD effect caused by the irradiation is studied by monitoring the generated second-harmonic light spectrum of the probe light. It is shown that PRD in the LiNbO3 QPM waveguide can be qualitatively characterized by the proposed method, and relevant information relating to the QPM wavelength conversion can be extracted directly. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
