    Notes: Negative photoconductivity (PC) was observed in Si ion-implanted GaAs:Cr below the fundamental band gap. The dependence of this effect on wavelength and intensity of illumination is reported. For photon energies slightly smaller than the optical energy gap the negative PC reverts into positive PC with increasing illumination intensity. Complementary investigations of PC in Si ion-implanted, undoped GaAs also are presented. The physical reasons for the negative PC are discussed.

    Notes: The out-of-plane vibrations of the amino group in 2-aminopyrimidine have large amplitudes, and cannot be properly described within the harmonic approximation. The normal mode analysis carried out at this level of approximation at the restricted Hartree–Fock level and at the second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory level failed to match the experimental transition frequency of ν≈200 cm−1 of the inversion vibration in this compound. In an effort to better understand this vibration motion, we went beyond the harmonic approximation. The inversion vibration was treated as being uncoupled from all other nuclear degrees of freedom. An internal coordinate (ω) was chosen whose displacement mimicked the out-of-plane distortion of the amino group during the inversion vibration. Electronic energy was calculated at the second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory level at selected values of ω to form a double-well curve describing a model potential within which the nuclei move during the vibration. This potential was incorporated into a one-dimensional Hamiltonian, and vibrational energy expectation values were variationally determined by utilizing the harmonic wavefunctions as the basis set. Two sets of calculations were performed: one in which the mirror plane of symmetry was preserved throughout the vibrational deformation limiting the internal coordinates to 17, and another in which the symmetry was unconstrained permitting description by 3N−6=30 internal coordinates. These calculations resulted in prediction of the v=0→v=1 transition energy of ν=130.1 cm−1 and ν=206.7 cm−1, respectively, reasonably matching the experimental value of ≈200 cm−1. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: Silver dendrites were obtained on Cu plate by a classic galvanic displacement process. The process of preparing Ag particles was performed at different immersion times in AgNO 3 solution, and the best process parameters were selected according to the enhancement effect of the Raman spectra of Rhodamine 6G. Ag-Cu substrates were chosen for a Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) study of biocomplexes because their preparation is cost effective and simple, and the relative homogeneous signal enhancement on the prepared silver SERS-active substrate was obtained. The rapid process of surface preparation was applied to identify the mode of coordination. Biocomplexes of Co and Ni ions with adenosine triphosphate form in neutral pH were immersed on the Ag dendrites, and SERS spectra of these compounds were collected. This research work was carried out in order to determine different types of coordination in the same pH conditions and relatively low concentration using SERS which is an emerging and promising technique for the determination of coordination types in biocomplexes.

    Description: Investigations of emission of harmonics from argon gas jet irradiated by 700 fs, 5 mJ pulses from a KrF laser are presented. Harmonics conversion was optimized by varying the experimental geometry and the nozzle size. For the collection of the harmonic radiation silicon and solar-blind diamond semiconductor detectors equipped with charge preamplifiers were applied. The possibility of using a single-crystal CVD diamond detector for separate measurement of the 3rd harmonic in the presence of a strong pumping radiation was explored. Our experiments show that the earlier suggested 0.7% conversion efficiency can really be obtained, but only in the case when phase matching is optimized with an elongated gas target length corresponding to the length of coherence.

    Description: Due to the present shortage of 3 He and the associated tremendous increase of its price, the supply of large neutron detection systems with 3 He becomes unaffordable. Alternative neutron detection concepts, therefore, have been invented based on solid 10 B converters. These concepts require development in thin film deposition technique regarding high adhesion, thickness uniformity and chemical purity of the converter coating on large area substrates. We report on the sputter deposition of highly uniform large-area 10 B 4 C coatings of up to 2  μ m thickness with a thickness deviation below 4% using the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht large area sputtering system. The 10 B 4 C coatings are x-ray amorphous and highly adhesive to the substrate. Material analysis by means of X-ray-Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Secondary-Ion-Mass-Spectrometry, and Rutherford-Back-Scattering (RBS) revealed low impurities concentration in the coatings. The isotope composition determined by Secondary-Ion-Mass-Spectrometry, RBS, and inelastic nuclear reaction analysis of the converter coatings evidences almost identical 10 B isotope contents in the sputter target and in the deposited coating. Neutron conversion and detection test measurements with variable irradiation geometry of the converter coating demonstrate an average relative quantum efficiency ranging from 65% to 90% for cold neutrons as compared to a black 3 He-monitor. Thus, these converter coatings contribute to the development of 3 He-free prototype detectors based on neutron grazing incidence. Transferring the developed coating process to an industrial scale sputtering system can make alternative 3 He-free converter elements available for large area neutron detection systems.
