Beschreibung: Scattering from metal nanoparticles above a high index substrate has the potential to significantly enhance light trapping in thin film devices with minimal additional cost. However, the benefits of this approach are currently limited by short wavelength losses from Fano resonances arising due to interference between the plasmon modes in a nanoparticle. In this paper, the effect of particle-substrate interactions on the observed Fano behaviour is explored in detail, using finite-difference time-domain simulations and an analytical model. Several approaches to mitigate the Fano loss are explored, and it is found that overcoating the particle with a thin dielectric film represents by far the most effective way to remove Fano losses whilst keeping broadband forward scattering high.

Beschreibung: We report the discovery of finite length scale effects on vibronic coupling in nanoscale α-Fe 2 O 3 as measured by the behavior of vibronically activated d-d on-site excitations of Fe 3+ as a function of size and shape. An oscillator strength analysis reveals that the frequency of the coupled symmetry-breaking phonon changes with size, a crossover that we analyze in terms of increasing three-dimensional character to the displacement pattern. These findings demonstrate the flexibility of mixing processes in confined systems and suggest a strategy for both enhancing and controlling charge-lattice interactions in other materials.

Beschreibung: We experimentally demonstrate tunable coupled cavities based upon open access zero-dimensional hemispherical microcavities. The modes of the photonic molecules are strongly coupled with quantum well excitons forming a system of tunable polaritonic molecules. The cavity-cavity coupling strength, which is determined by the degree of modal overlap, is controlled through the fabricated centre-to-centre distance and tuned in-situ through manipulation of both the exciton-photon and cavity-cavity detunings by using nanopositioners to vary the mirror separation and angle between them. We demonstrate micron sized confinement combined with high photonic Q-factors of 31 000 and lower polariton linewidths of 150  μ eV at resonance along with cavity-cavity coupling strengths between 2.5 meV and 60  μ eV for the ground cavity state.

Notizen: A new technique is presented for measuring vibrational dynamics in excited electronic states. A vibronic state is prepared by a picosecond laser pump pulse. This state is then probed by monitoring transitions to vibrational states of the ion by a delayable picosecond probe pulse. The cross section for transitions to specific ion vibrational states gives information about the time evolution of the initially prepared intermediate state. This technique is demonstrated for several vibronic states in the S1 state of fluorene.

Notizen: The local configurations of three-dimensional magnetic neutral points are investigated by a linear analysis about the null. It is found that the number of free parameters determining the arrangement of field lines is four. The configurations are first classified as either potential or non-potential. Then the non-potential cases are subdivided into three cases depending on whether the component of current parallel to the spine is less than, equal to or greater than a threshold current; therefore there are three types of linear non-potential null configurations (a radial null, a critical spiral and a spiral). The effect of the four free parameters on the system is examined and it is found that only one parameter categorizes the potential configurations, whilst two parameters are required if current is parallel to the spine. However, all four parameters are needed if there is current both parallel and perpendicular to the spine axis. The magnitude of the current parallel to the spine determines whether the null has spiral, critical spiral or radial field lines whilst the current perpendicular to the spine affects the inclination of the fan plane to the spine. A simple method is given to determine the basic structure of a null given M the matrix which describes the local linear structure about a null point. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. Notizen: Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements of an undoped InGaAsP multiple-quantum-well heterostructure at excess carrier densities between 1014 and 1016 cm−3 reveal unexpectedly long carrier lifetimes, in excess of 2 μs. By fitting the appropriate rate equation parameters to our results, we establish that radiative recombination is the dominant relaxation process, and show that nonradiative recombination is much less pronounced than in similar quantum-well structures measured previously. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We describe a picosecond resolution time-resolved photoluminescence microscope with high detection sensitivity at wavelengths extending beyond 1500 nm. The instrument performs time-correlated single photon counting using an InGaAs/InP single photon avalanche diode as a detector, and provides temporal resolution of less than 300 ps (full width at half maximum) and spatial resolution down to 4 μm at a sample temperature between 4 and 300 K. Analysis of noise characteristics indicates the ability to measure the excess carrier lifetimes of semiconductor devices with excited carrier densities of less than 1014 cm−3. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
