Notes: Measurements of rate coefficients for intramultiplet state transfer of Zn(4 3P1→4 3PJ') by collisions with the rare gases are presented. The state-to-state binary rate coefficients are derived from least-squares fittings of the time-resolved triexponential behavior of the 4 3P1 fluorescence. These rate coefficients were studied systematically over a temperature range of 690–1100 K in order to characterize the velocity dependence of the collisional coupling. The systematic behavior of the rate coefficients with varying temperature and noble gas species is qualitatively consistent with a nearly adiabatic coupling limit for noncrossing levels.

Notes: Silicon nanowires have been synthesized by laser ablation of Si powder targets at 1200 °C. Transmission electron microscopy study showed that most Si nanowires had smooth surfaces and nearly the same diameter of about 16 nm. Beside the most abundant smooth-surface nanowires, four other forms of nanowires, named spring-shaped, fishbone-shaped, frog-egg-shaped, and necklace-shaped nanowires, were observed. The formation of nanowires into different shapes was explained by the two-step growth model based on the vapor–liquid–solid mechanism. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Rapid eutectic growth in a highly undercooled liquid was accomplished by containerlessly processing Co–Mo eutectic alloy in a drop tube. The containerless state during free fall produces substantial undercoolings up to 391 K (0.24TE) in falling droplets before crystallization. The eutectic growth mechanism is found to transform from lamellar eutectic to anomalous eutectic if the droplet undercooling exceeds a critical value of about 56 K, which coincides well with the lower boundary of the calculated eutectic coupled zone. Although the reduced gravity level of 10−2–10−3 g has little influence on this eutectic growth mechanism transition, it frequently results in the formation of spherical anomalous eutectic grains owing to the symmetrical temperature field and concentration field surrounding solid/liquid interface. Both theoretical analyses and experimental observations indicate that the independent nucleation and cooperative branched growth of two eutectic phases are responsible for the eutectic growth mechanism transition. The three-dimensional structural model of anomalous eutectic grain is a two-phase composite dendrite. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Co is undercooled to 227 K (0.128 Tm) and its specific heat has been determined as 40.6 Jmol−1 K−1 by electromagnetic levitation drop calorimeter, whose good accuracy is verified by the measured specific heat data of pure nickel. On the basis of measured specific heat data, the thermodynamic properties, such as thermodynamic driving force and relative nucleation rate, are calculated. Moreover, the theoretical models of Turnbull and Dubey–Ramachandrarao are also used to calculate the thermodynamic properties for a comparison. It is found that both the thermodynamic driving force and relative nucleation rate have large deviation compared with the calculated results based on experimental data. This indicates that, since the deviation of specific heat value has a drastic influence on thermodynamic driving force and nucleation rate for the undercooled liquid metals, it is necessary to measure the specific heat quantitatively by experiments. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Green upconversion emissions at 548 and 528 nm have been obtained from sol-gel derived nanocrystalline Er3+:BaTiO3 films under 980 nm excitation. The green emissions are attributed to the ground-state (4I15/2) -directed transitions from 2H11/2 (528 nm) and 4S3/2 (548 nm) of Er3+ ions. Analysis of the temporal evolution of the emission at 548 nm shows that both excited state absorption of individual ion and energy transfer between the two neighboring ions contribute to the upconversion emissions in Er3+ (3 mol %):BaTiO3 film. The lifetime of the dominant emission at 548 nm is about 90 μs. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The novel compounds Nd3Fe29−xTx (T=V and Cr) have been successfully synthesized. Their x-ray patterns can be indexed with a monoclinic symmetry and the A2/m space group. The Curie temperatures of Nd3Fe29−xTx are 455 and 413 K for T=V and Cr, the saturation magnetization at 4.2 K and room temperature are 54.7 and 46.8 μB/f.u. for T=V and 49.9 and 32.2 μB/f.u. for T=Cr, and the anisotropy fields at 4.2 K and room temperature are 12.8 and 2.4 T for T=V and 9.1 and 1.2 T for T=Cr, respectively. The spin reorientations of the easy magnetization direction of Nd3Fe29−xTx are observed at around 230 K for T=V and 135 K for T=Cr, respectively. After nitrogenation the relative volume expansion was about 6%, Curie temperature of each nitride increased about 50%, and the transition temperature Tsr of the spin reorientations of the nitride also increased 145 K for T=V and 250 K for T=Cr, respectively, compared with its parent compound. Nitrogenation resulted in remarkable improvements in the saturation magnetization and anisotropy fields at 4.2 K and room temperature. Magnetohistory effects for Nd3Fe29−xTx and Nd3Fe29−xTxN4 (T=V and Cr) in a low field have been observed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Description: A simple scheme to produce strong magnetic fields due to cold electron flow in an open-ended coil heated by high power laser pulses is proposed. It differs from previous generation of magnetic fields driven by fast electron current in a capacitor-coil target [S. Fujioka et al ., Sci. Rep. 3 , 1170 (2013)]. The fields in our experiments are measured by B-dot detectors and proton radiography, respectively. A 205 T strong magnetic field at the center of the coil target is generated in the free space at Iλ 2 of 6.85 × 10 14  W cm −2   μ m 2 , where I is the laser intensity, and λ is the laser wavelength. The magnetic field strength is proportional to Iλ 2 . Compared with the capacitor-coil target, the generation mechanism of the magnetic field is straightforward and the coil is easy to be fabricated.

Description: A 32-channel heterodyne radiometer has been developed for the measurement of electron cyclotron emission (ECE) on the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST). This system collects X-mode ECE radiation spanning a frequency range of 104–168 GHz, where the frequency coverage corresponds to a full radial coverage for the case with a toroidal magnetic field of 2.3 T. The frequency range is equally spaced every 2 GHz from 105.1 to 167.1 GHz with an RF bandwidth of ∼500 MHz and the video bandwidth can be switched among 50, 100, 200, and 400 kHz. Design objectives and characterization of the system are presented in this paper. Preliminary results for plasma operation are also presented.
