Notes: Rayleigh–Brillouin spectra of aqueous solutions of hydroxyl ammonium nitrate (HAN) and triethanol ammonium nitrate (TEAN) were studied at atmospheric pressure over a temperature range from 205 to 298 K. The hypersonic velocity and absorption coefficient of the phonons were calculated from the spectra as a function of temperature. The absorption due to viscosity and internal energy exchange through the relaxation mechanisms were considered. We find that both mechanisms are responsible for the absorption, but at the lower temperature, the one related to internal energy dominates. The free volume model was used to estimate the activation energy. This value is quite consistent with values calculated from the relaxation time. The effects of relaxation and the water concentration on mixtures of aqueous solutions of HAN and TEAN are also discussed.

Notes: The asymptotic expansions for the Kummer function obtained in the study of the linear response of magnetized Bose plasmas at T=0 K are presented for large and small values of its parameter, thereby displaying the function's asymptotic nonuniformity. The large parameter expansion plays a determining role in the behavior of these Bose systems in the limit that the external magnetic field B→0. This particular expansion is generalized herein and its validity tested by determining the asymptotic expansion for the Hurwitz zeta function.

Notes: Temperature and coverage dependent studies of p-aminobenzoic acid on a Cu(110) single crystal surface show a novel sequence of periodic structures linked to successive removal of hydrogen from the adsorbed species, as shown by LEED, STM, HREELS, and TPD. At room temperature, flat-lying molecules with a primitive unit cell of (3×4) periodicity with glide plane along the 〈001〉 direction are observed. Annealing this surface to 464 K causes partial desorption of H2 and a variation of the intensity in HREELS of various bands and formation of a (5 −22 4) periodicity. STM images suggest the formation of dimers, as a result of the dehydrogenation. On annealing to higher temperatures (510 K), further dehydrogenation forms (6 −51 2) structure. Finally, at 540 K, a (4 −31 2) periodicity is revealed in which all species correspond to dehydrogenated dimers. Through this sequence, all species retain a flat-lying orientation on the surface. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The role of hydrodynamic flexibility stemming from a lack of configurational rigidity in the sedimentary and dispersive transport of macromolecules in dilute polymer solutions is analyzed within the framework of generalized Taylor dispersion theory. A macromolecular chain is modeled as a thermally fluctuating porous Brownian spongelike sphere which—in contrast with the classical investigations of Debye–Bueche and Brinkman for the rigid porous sphere case—is allowed to undergo thermal fluctuations in size (assumed governed by a Hookean elastic potential). Our results show an increase of up to about 20% in the average translational mobility of the flexible (size-fluctuating) sphere above that of the comparable rigid Debye–Bueche/Brinkman sphere (of equilibrium preaveraged radius). Coupling between mobility variations (arising from instantaneous fluctuations in sphere radius) and diffusive sampling of such sphere radii in size space, respectively, gives rise to a "Taylor'' dispersion mechanism, which enhances the diffusivity of the macromolecule above and beyond its purely molecular value. Indeed, the dispersivity (dyadic) of the sedimenting sphere is shown to be anisotropic, possessing a value different from its (mean) molecular diffusivity in the direction of net sedimentation. Both sedimentation and dispersion effects associated with size fluctuations are shown to be maximized at finite, intermediate values of the nondimensional sponge stiffness parameter S, rather than being monotonically decreasing functions of S. The relative importance of both effects increase with decreasing permeability of the sphere. With an increasing number (N(very-much-greater-than)1) of monomer units composing the chain, the isotropic (molecular) portion of the dispersivity dyadic decreases like N−1/2, whereas the anisotropic Taylor-dispersion portion, which is exclusively associated with the size fluctuations, increases like N3. The latter contribution, which is negligible for ordinary gravitational settling (owing to the smallness of the relevant Langevin parameter), may, however, become significant for ultracentrifugation of polymer solutions composed of long (N〉105) macromolecular chains.

Notes: We study picosecond carrier transport dynamics induced by 200 fs 1.55 μm optical pulses in charge injection transistor structures. We propose and demonstrate a new optoelectronic method for exploring the interactions of hot majority carriers and cold minority carriers, as well as the optical control of real space transfer in these devices. The minority holes photogenerated in the channel produce substantial cooling of the hot-electron majority carriers and lead to the reduction of the real space transfer. The new method also provides a direct measure of the minority carrier lifetime in the transistor channel. These effects are demonstrated in InGaAs-channel devices with both InAlAs and InP barriers. The similarities in the device characteristics are explained in terms of the interaction of photogenerated minority holes with majority electrons in the channel leading to a photoconductor-like drain current and to a reduction in the real space transfer collector current. The differences are attributed to the different conduction and valence band energy offsets between the wide band gap barrier and the low band gap collector and channel layers. Furthermore, the InAlAs-barrier device shows a capability of serving as a practical photodetector with the measured, system-limited recovery speed of ∼5 ps. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This reply reinforces the need for examining the internal consistency of longitudinal and lateral stress data under plane shock wave propagation. This was pointed out in an article by Dandekar, Abbate, and Frankel [J. Appl. Phys. 76, 4077 (1994)] to determine the shear strength of a solid. It also shows that shear strength of a crystalline solid under plane shock wave compression can be determined accurately from its reliable Hugoniot and applicable hydrodynamic compression of the solid.

Notes: Equation of state of aluminum nitride (AlN) is determined from the ultrasonic wave velocity measurements of longitudinal and shear modes to 0.7 GPa. The equation of state obtained from the ultrasonic data is used in conjunction with the shock Hugoniot data on AlN to estimate its strength under plane shock wave compression. Further, a better understanding of the existing shock Hugoniot data above its transition stress from wurtzite to rock salt structure is realized through a comparison with the static high-pressure investigations pertaining to this phase transition in AlN.

Notes: A coordinate-free equation modeling the flame front dynamics as propagation of density discontinuity within the framework of the Darreus–Landau hydrodynamical model is derived under the assumption of potential flow. The assumption is based on the observation that for slightly perturbed plane configurations the flow is irrotational if the thermal expansion of the gas is weak. A relationship with an equation obtained earlier for a slightly perturbed plane flame front is established in the case of weak thermal expansion. An invariant equation simultaneously modeling the thermal-diffusional and the hydrodynamical instabilities is suggested, which also can be reduced to earlier results in appropriate limits.

Notes: Numerical simulations of an impulsively started jet were performed in order to investigate the effects of trailing jet instability on axisymmetric vortex ring formation. The predictions were compared to experimental results reported in the literature and to recently published numerical results. The total and vortex ring circulations were found to be in good agreement with both the experimental and the numerical results. The presence of a universal formation time scale was confirmed. The results also highlighted an important interaction between an instability which develops in the trailing jet for large discharge times and the dynamics of the head vortex ring. This interaction accelerates the process by which the vortex ring detaches from the trailing jet and has a significant effect on the vortex ring circulation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The sound radiated by an axisymmetric (two-dimensional) premixed reacting free jet was studied using direct numerical simulation. The jet was injected into cold combustion products. A narrow (in radial extent) high temperature pulse was specified at the jet inlet to stabilize the reacting jet. The computational domain included both the near-field flow and far-field acoustic regions. Both reacting and nonreacting cases were considered. The heat release associated with the reacting jet had a significant effect on the vortical structure, as well as the sound radiation level and pattern, within the jet. The sound radiation pattern and the source terms in Lighthill's equation were used to identify apparent sound source locations. Within the context of the assumptions of the present simulations, the results showed that the effect of heat release was to: (1) Stabilize the jet, (2) enhance sound radiation levels due to an increase in the entropy source, and (3) shift the frequency of the most unstable mode to lower values, resulting in a broader sound spectrum. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
