    Description: Young basaltic knolls have been discovered on the old oceanic lithosphere, namely petit-spot volcanoes. Based on their geochemical signatures, they have presumably originated from partial melts in the asthenosphere. However, there is no direct information on the depth provenance of petit-spot formation. Here we report new geothermobarometric data of rare mantle xenoliths discovered from petit-spot lavas exhibiting a geotherm much hotter than expected for the ca. 140 Ma seafloor on which petit-spots were formed. Such an anomalously hot geotherm indicates that melt porosity around the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) must be as high as a few percent. Such high melt porosity would be possible by continuous melt replenishment. Excess pressure induced by the outer-rise topography enables horizontal melt migration along the LAB and sustains a continuous melt supply to petit-spot magmatism. Given the general age-depth relationship of ocean basins, a melt-rich boundary region could also be a global feature.

    Description: In this paper, we report the heating properties of gold-magnetite (Au-Fe 3 O 4 ) heterodimer nanoparticles (NPs) subjected to an alternating magnetic field. The Au-Fe 3 O 4 NPs coated with oleic acid and oleylamine (OA) were synthesized through a method that combines seed mediation and high-temperature decomposition. The coating was replaced with dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) by the ligand-exchange method. The specific absorption rates (SARs) for the OA- and DMSA-coated Au-Fe 3 O 4 NPs coated with OA and DMSA at room temperature were determined through the calorimetric and magnetometric methods. SAR depended on the square of the magnetic field H up to an H value of 4 kA/m. The absolute value of the SAR for DMSA-coated NPs is about fivefold higher than that of the OA-coated NPs. The AC magnetic hysteresis measurements showed the recovery of the magnetic volume and the decrease in the magnetic anisotropy of the DMSA-coated NPs relative to those of the OA-coated NPs. These results suggest that the protective agent influences the magnetic properties of magnetite NPs via gold NPs.
