    Description: Measurement and control of the current profile is essential for high performance and steady state operation of Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). For this purpose, a conventional Motional Stark Effect (MSE) diagnostics utilizing photoelastic modulators is proposed and investigated. The pilot experiment includes one channel to verify the feasibility of MSE, whose sightline intersects with Neutral Beam Injection at major radius of R = 2.12 m. A beam splitter is adopted for simultaneous measurements of Stark multiplets and their polarization directions. A simplified simulation code was also developed to explore the Stark splitting spectra. Finally, the filter is optimized based on the viewing geometry and neutral beam parameters.

    Description: We demonstrate that 3.5-MeV oxygen irradiation can markedly enhance the in-field critical current of commercial second generation superconducting tapes with an exposure time of just 1 s per 0.8 cm 2 . The speed demonstrated here is now at the level required for an industrial reel-to-reel post-processing. The irradiation is made on production line samples through the protective silver coating and does not require any modification of the growth process. From TEM imaging, we identify small clusters as the main source of increased vortex pinning.

    Notes: We investigate the optical properties of new "superlattice particles'' that can be made of precisely controlled metal-insulator layers fabricated by sputtering or evaporation techniques. We found that there are two limits to the reflectivity behavior corresponding to wide and narrow particles. In the narrow-particle limit, a series of sharply defined absorption peaks at frequencies controlled by the width is observed. In the wide-particle limit, most of the light incident on the particles will be absorbed. Materials of this type possess desirable infrared absorption characteristics and can be used for new polarization sensitive infrared absorbers and detectors.

    Notes: Two different effective-medium theories for two-phase dielectric composites are considered. They are the effective medium approximation (EMA) and the differential effective medium approximation (DEM). Both theories correspond to realizable microgeometries in which the composite is built up incrementally through a process of homogenization. The grains are assumed to be similar ellipsoids randomly oriented, for which the microgeometry of EMA is symmetric. The microgeometry of DEM is always unsymmetric in that one phase acts as a backbone. It is shown that both EMA and DEM give effective dielectric constants that satisfy the Hashin–Shtrikman bounds. A new realization of the Hashin–Shtrikman bounds is presented in terms of DEM. The general solution to the DEM equation is obtained and the percolation properties of both theories are considered. EMA always has a percolation threshold, unless the grains are needle shaped. In contrast, DEM with the conductor as backbone always percolates. However, the threshold in EMA can be avoided by allowing the grain shape to vary with volume fraction. The grains must become needlelike as the conducting phase vanishes in order to maintain a finite conductivity. Specifically, the grain-shape history for which EMA reproduces DEM is found. The grain shapes are oblate for low-volume fractions of insulator. As the volume fraction increases, the shape does not vary much, until at some critical volume fraction there is a discontinuous transition in grain shape from oblate to prolate. In general, it is not always possible to map DEM onto an equivalent EMA, and even when it is, the mapping is not preserved under the interchange of the two phases. This is because DEM is inherently unsymmetric between the two phases.

    Notes: Altered phosphorus concentration, oxygen supply rate, and programmed addition of sucrose and phosphorus were applied to Dioscorea deltoidea plant cells in airlift suspension to increase the formation of the secondary metabolite diosgenin. A low oxygen supply rate (kla′ of 3.9 h-1) completely inhibited formation of diosgenin. A high oxygen supply rate (kla′ of 17.1 h-1) led to the greatest formation of diosgenin in 30 g/L sucrose when the sucrose-to-phosphorus mole ratio was 42.5:1. Programmed addition of nutrients over a 15-day period reduced growth of cell mass relative to diosgenin mass. Intentional aggregation by entrapment of virtually all cells in reticulated polyurethane foam led to reduced cell-mass yield, diosgenin yield and concentration relative to suspended cells at the same conditions. Entrapment of a small fraction of the cells led to a delayed development of a suspension culture and to formation of significantly higher concentrations of diosgenin. Nearly all of this increase was attributable to the suspended cells. This result suggested sequestering of nonproductive cells by the matrix or sequestering of important nutrients by the matrix-bound cells. Entrapped cells attained densities of 40 g/L in the matrix.
