Notes: The torsional Raman spectra of C2H6 and C2D6 have been experimentally investigated with an improved conventional Raman spectrometer. Wave numbers and absolute cross sections of all observed bands have been satisfactorily interpreted within the experimental accuracy by means of a simple, pure-torsional Hamiltonian and a model for the torsional dependence of the molecular polarizability. The effective threefold potential barrier parameters for C2H6 have been taken from the recent literature, whilst for C2D6 the values V3eff (C2D6)=990±2 cm−1 and V6eff (C2D6)=7.9±1 cm−1 were obtained.

Notes: We present a simple model for the thermodynamic behavior of liquid water. The enhanced interactions and open structure of the hydrogen bond are modeled on the average by a simple van der Waals mixture of two interchangeable components. All the anomalous thermodynamic behavior of liquid water is predicted by the model.

Notes: A new, closed-form, free-energy functional is derived for a binary polymer mixture. When the free-energy functional is expanded in series form around the mean concentration, the leading term in the expansion is the usual Flory–Huggins free energy. The Fourier transform of the coefficients of this expansion are approximate vertex functions Γ¯(n). A useful and tractable form for Γ¯(n) is obtained for all n which only depends on the magnitudes of the n wave vectors. It is shown that Γ¯(2) is exact and Γ¯(3) and Γ¯(4) reduce to the correct limiting values in the small and large wave vector limits.

Notes: Depolarization ratios and Raman scattering differential cross sections of the Raman active fundamental bands of gas phase C6H6 and C6D6 are reported. These quantities are first reduced to derivatives of the molecular polarizability with respect to symmetry coordinates, and then these derivatives are interpreted in terms of bond properties, proving that the bond polarizability concept is as useful for aromatic systems as for other smaller nonaromatic molecules.

Notes: Monomer concentration fluctuations in high molecular weight polymer blends are investigated. The fluctuations reduce the value of the χ interaction term in the Flory–Huggins free energy by a factor of (1-6/π2) and add a concentration and molecular weight contribution which decreases phase stability for off-critical compositions. Except at the critical point, the spinodal values are smaller than those predicted from a Flory–Huggins-type free energy. For an incompressible blend with components of equal size N, the corrections to the spinodal were found to vary as ||1−2φ0||4/3N−1/3, where φ0 is the mean concentration.

Notes: The nonrelativistic anharmonic–asymmetrical–oscillator (AAO) is studied in full. The classical equation of motion is solved using Jacobi elliptic functions which have both real and imaginary periods. The imaginary period is connected with the imaginary part of the energy in quantum mechanics. The resonances (Siegert states) are calculated in the JWKB approximation.

Notes: A simple generalization is presented of the usual Fourier transforms using generalized exponential and Fourier series developed previously for nonlinear systems. The expressions are given in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions in a form as close as possible to the Fourier transform. There is a pair of transforms for each value of the Jacobi parameter m. Simple applications are presented, one of which gives the generalized Yukawa potential and another that gives the generalized Breit–Wigner potential: Both correspond to the generalized Klein–Gordon equation.

Notes: Linear kinetic particle transport in stochastic heterogeneous media is discussed. The analysis includes scattering in a three-dimensional setting and deals with arbitrary time-dependent statistics. Ensemble-average operators are used to derive two independent complete descriptions for the ensemble-averaged angular flux. The first description consists of an infinite system of integral, renewal-like equations for averaged flux values over spatially dependent, increasingly smaller sets. The second approach results in an infinite system of kinetic, balancelike equations for locally averaged flux values. Both types of equations include averagings over transitional sets of states that change locally of physical properties. Previous results are recovered from the limit form of these equations for no-memory statistics and purely absorbing media. Also, the Levermore–Pomraning–Wong proposed models are shown to correspond to truncated forms of these equations.

Notes: The growth and structure properties of Cd1−xFexTe thin films prepared by rf sputtering were studied. Films with thicknesses in the range 0.75–2.45 μm were grown onto Corning glass substrates at temperatures between 50 and 300 °C in an argon atmosphere at a pressure of 3 mTorr. The deposition rate was determined by film thickness profile analysis. Transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffractometry techniques were used to evaluate the structure, grain size, and orientation of the films. These properties were found to be related to the substrate deposition temperature.

Notes: The spatial and spectral emission characteristics of a two-dimensional CdS laser array, pumped by a high-energy electron beam, have been experimentally investigated. The near-field emission from each cell or array element is found to arise from a virtual line located behind the cell. The results are consistent with a geometric ray model of a tilted mirror resonator.
