Description: The irradiation uniformity of a cone-in-shell target directly driven by laser beams has been considered. First, a model is established to include the influence of the cone on laser beam propagation. Then, the irradiation uniformity on the target surface outside the cone during the initial imprinting phase is analyzed, and highly uniform irradiation on the target surface outside the cone is achieved by optimizing the intensity distribution within laser beams, as well as the polar direct drive displacement. As an illustrative example, direct drive irradiation uniformity of a typical cone-in-shell target is improved for Shenguang III laser facility, the illumination non-uniformity is reduced from 5.8% to 1.1%. Irradiation on the cone surface outside the target is also analyzed, and it is found that for the laser-target configuration considered in this work, a gold cone thicker than 50 μ m is needed to avoid shock breakout. Moreover, sensitivity to beam uncertainties (power imbalance and pointing error) is analyzed, indicating that this scheme can tolerate a certain amount of beam errors.

Description: This paper reports the design of a microcoupler in the near-infrared region. The proposed structure consists of two alternately arranged complementary media. The complementary media, which consist of double-positive material and double-negative material, also can be made of a pair of single-negative materials. Simulation results show that the proposed structure has an excellent coupling efficiency compared to direct coupling. It has a maximum coupling efficiency closing to 1 at 1550 nm. As the total size of the coupling structure decreases, the passband exhibits a property of gradual blue shift. Therefore, we can design couplers operating in different frequency bands with high coupling efficiency. The influence of the permittivity and the thickness of each material layer on the coupling efficiency are also studied in detail. The proposed microcoupler has potential guidance in the design and development of high-performance coupling structures.

Description: The volume fractions of constituent phases are a rudimentary parameter for ceramic composites. Synchrotron-radiation computed tomography (SR-CT) is an emerging three-dimensional characterization method, and this article is intended to explore its application in determination of the phase volume fraction for ceramic composite. The composite of yttria-stabilized zirconia ( YSZ ) and Sr -doped LaFeO 3 ( LSF ) was used as a model material to examine the validity of the method. A three-dimensional image of the composite was obtained using the SR-CT method. The constituent phases of the composite were discriminated by the gray level of the pixels in the image, and their volume fractions were determined by counting the number of corresponding pixels. The volume fractions for YSZ and LSF were 56.8% and 36.6%, respectively, and the volume ratio of these two phases was 1.55, slightly higher than that calculated from the composition of the starting powders. The porosity of the composite determined by SR-CT was 6.6%, somewhat lower than that by the Archimedes method. For comparison, the phase volume fractions of the composite were also determined by analyzing its backscattered electron-SEM images, and the results of this two-dimensional method are in fair agreement with those of SR-CT. It is concluded that SR-CT with improved spatial and compositional resolution can give a fairly accurate measurement of the phase volume fraction of the ceramic composites.

Description: We demonstrated highly sensitive detection of explosive dissolved in solvent with a portable spectroscopy system (Q-MACS) by tracing the explosive byproduct, N 2 O, in combination with a pulsed electric discharge system for safe explosive decomposition. Using Octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX), the gas was monitored and analyzed by Q-MACS and the presence of the dissolved explosive clearly detected. While HMX presence could be identified directly in the air above the solutions even without plasma, much better results were achieved under the decomposition. The experiment results give an estimated detection limit of 10 ppb, which corresponds to a 15 pg of HMX.

Description: A scheme for enhancing the electron injection charge in a laser-driven bubble acceleration is proposed. In this scheme, a thin foil target is placed in front of a gas target. Upon interaction with an ultra-intense laser pulse, the foil emits electrons with large longitudinal momenta, allowing them to be trapped into the transmitted shaped laser-excited bubble in the gaseous plasma target. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation is used to demonstrate this scheme, and an electron beam with a total electron number of 4.21 × 10 8   μ m − 1 can be produced, which is twice the number of electrons produced without the foil. Such scheme may be widely used for applications that require high electron yields such as positron and gamma ray generation from relativistic electron beams interacting with solid targets.

Description: Recently, the short wavelength laser is believed to have a promising prospect in fast ignition for reducing the conflict between laser energy requirement and electron stopping range. Here we investigate the influence of laser wavelength and intensity in the angular dispersion of hot electrons. Both our theoretical model and numerical simulations show that the angular dispersion would increase rapidly with the shortening of laser wavelength due to the Weibel instability, while the laser intensity has little effect on it. These results have important implications for fast ignition.

Description: The Walker and Syers model of phosphorus (P) transformations during long-term soil development has been verified along many chronosequences, but has rarely been examined along climosequences, particularly in arid regions. We hypothesized that decreasing aridity would have similar effects on soil P transformations as time by increasing the rate of pedogenesis. To assess this, we examined P fractions in arid and semi-arid grassland soils along a 3,700 km aridity gradient in northern China (aridity between 0.43 and 0.97, calculated as 1–[mean annual precipitation / potential evapotranspiration]). Primary mineral P declined as aridity decreased, although it still accounted for about 30% of the total P in the wettest sites. In contrast, the proportions of organic and occluded P increased as aridity decreased. These changes in soil P composition occurred in parallel with marked shifts in soil nutrient stoichiometry, with organic carbon:organic P and nitrogen:organic P ratios increasing with decreasing aridity. These results indicate increasing P demand relative to carbon or nitrogen along the climosequence. Overall, our results indicate a broad shift from abiotic to biotic control on P cycling at an aridity threshold of approximately 0.7 (corresponding to about 250 mm mean annual rainfall). We conclude that the Walker and Syers model can be extended to climosequences in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, and that the apparent decoupling of nutrient cycles in arid soils is a consequence of their pedogenic immaturity.

Description: Abstract Drylands are characterized by stressful conditions with the limitation of both carbon (C) and nutrients, particularly nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Biological C, N, and P releases from soil organic matter by enzymes are essential components for biogeochemical cycles and are sensitive to the climate in drylands. However, how the ecoenzymatic C:N:P stoichiometry responds to environmental factors (i.e., climatic and edaphic factors) over broad geographical scales remains largely unclear. We examined the patterns of ecoenzymatic C:N:P ratios across a 3,700‐km aridity gradient (0.43 〈 aridity 〈 0.97) in northern China. In wetter sites (aridity 〈 0.70), the relative C:N:P acquisition ratios via enzymes remained relatively constant with increasing aridity. In contrast, in drier sites (aridity 〉 0.70), the enzymatic C:nutrient (N and P) ratios declined as the aridity increased, while the enzymatic P:N ratios were mostly lower than those in the wetter sites. In drier sites with low C availability, the increasing carbon use efficiency and the increasing proportion of C converted to biomass (than the proportion of respiration) contributed to the declines of the enzymatic C:nutrient ratios as the aridity increased. The overall lower enzymatic P:N ratios were related to the higher soil P availability compared with N availability (higher organic P and lower soil NH4+:available P ratios) in drier sites. Overall, our findings indicate that intrinsic linkages of biological C, N, and P acquisitions and cycles were broken at the aridity threshold of 0.70, with higher acquisition efforts for N and P (particularly for N) with increasing aridity in drier sites with aridity 〉 0.70.

Description: Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film has been widely investigated as a sensing material due to its outstanding properties such as biocompatibility, high thermal stability, good chemical resistance, high piezo-, pyro- and ferro-electric properties. This paper reports on the design, test, and analysis of a biomimetic tactile sensor based on PVDF film. This sensor consists of a PVDF film with aluminum electrodes, a pair of insulating layers, and a “handprint” friction layer with a copper foil. It is designed for easy fabrication and high reliability in outputting signals. In bionics, the fingerprint of the glabrous skin plays an important role during object handling. Therefore, in order to enhance friction and to provide better manipulation, the ridges of the fingertips were introduced into the design of the proposed tactile sensor. And, a basic experimental study on the selection of the high sensitivity fingerprint type for the biomimetic sensor was performed. In addition, we proposed a texture distinguish experiment to verify the sensor sensitivity. The experiment’s results show that the novel biomimetic sensor is effective in discriminating object surface characteristics. Furthermore, an efficient visual application program (LabVIEW) and a quantitative evaluation method were proposed for the verification of the biomimetic sensor. The proposed tactile sensor shows great potential for contact force and slip measurements.

Description: Two physiological changes of Spodoptera litura parasitized by Microplitis bicoloratus are hemocyte-apoptosis and retarded immature development. β-Chain of F o F 1 -ATPase was found from a S. litura transcriptome. It belongs to a conserved P-loop NTPase superfamily, descending from a common ancestor of Lepidopteran clade. However, the characterization of β-chain of ATPase in apoptotic cells and its involvement in development remain unknown. Here, the ectopic expression and endogenous F o F 1 -ATPase β-chain occurred on S. litura cell membrane: in vivo , at the late stage of apoptotic hemocyte, endogenous F o F 1 -ATPase β-chain was stably expressed during M. bicoloratus larva development from 4 to 7 days post-parasitization; in vitro , at an early stage of pre-apoptotic Spli221 cells by infecting with M. bicoloratus bracovirus particles, the proteins were speedily recover expression. Furthermore, endogenous F o F 1 -ATPase β-chain was localized on the apoptotic cell membrane. RNA interference (RNAi) of F o F 1 -ATPase β-chain led to significantly decreased head capsule width. This suggested that F o F 1 -ATPase β-chain positively regulated the development of S. litura . The RNAi effect on the head capsule width was enhanced with parasitism. Our research found that F o F 1 -ATPase β-chain was expressed and localized on the cell membrane in the apoptotic cells, and involved in the development of S. litura .
