Notes: Abstract Prior research identified the recessive rec3-1ts mutation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae which, in homozygous diploid cells, confers a conditional phenotype resulting in reduced levels of spontaneous mitotic recombination and loss of sporulation at the restrictive temperature of 36 °C. We found that a 3.4-kb genomic fragment that complements the rec3-1ts/rec3-1ts mutation and which maps to chromosome XIV, is identical to RPD3, a gene encoding a histone de-acetylase. Sporulation is reduced in homozygous diploid strains containing the rec3-1ts allele at 24 °C, suggesting that this allele of RPD3 encodes a gene product with a reduced function. Sporulation is abolished in diploid strains homozygous for the rpd3Δ or rec3-1ts alleles, as well as in rpd3Δ/rec3-1ts heteroallelic diploids, at the non-permissive temperature. Acid-phosphatase expression has been shown to be RPD3 dependent. We found that acid-phosphatase activity is greater in diploid strains homozygous for the temperature-sensitive rec3-1ts allele than in RPD3/RPD3 strains and increased further when mutant strains are grown at 36 °C. We also tested the rpd3Δ/rpd3Δ strains for their effects on spontaneous mitotic recombination. By assaying a variety of intra- and inter-genic recombination events distributed over three chromosomes, we found that in the majority of cases spontaneous mitotic recombination was reduced in diploid rpd3Δ/rpd3Δ cells (relative to a RPD3/RPD3 control). Finally, although 90% of mitotic recombinant events are initiated in the G1 phase of the growth cycle (i.e., before DNA synthesis) we show that RPD3 is not regulated in a cell-cycle-dependent manner. These data suggest that mitotic recombination, in addition to gene expression, is affected by changes in chromatin architecture mediated by RPD3.

Notes: The relaxation at constant applied field and temperature of a simple magnetic system is evaluated in the framework of the micromagnetic approximation and using a Monte Carlo algorithm. Our results, and particularly, those corresponding to the time evolution of the probability of magnetic moment reversal, evidence remarkable differences with the classical Arrehnius–Néel predictions. These differences are linked to the fact that relaxation proceeds through the formation of structures involving a large number of degrees of freedom. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Direct current and alternating current electrical measurements were performed to investigate the electrical conductivity of α-Al2O3:Mg samples with different concentrations of [Mg]0 centers (Mg ions each with a trapped hole) in the temperature interval 250–800 K. The concentration of [Mg]0 centers was monitored by the optical absorption peak at 2.56 eV. These centers were produced by oxidation at temperatures above 1050 K. The formation rate of [Mg]0 centers depends on the previous thermal history of the sample in either reducing or oxidizing atmosphere. At low electrical fields, dc measurements reveal blocking contacts. At high fields, the I–V characteristic is similar to that of a diode (corresponding to a blocking contact at one side of the sample and an ohmic contact at the other side) connected in series with the bulk resistance of the sample. Steady electroluminescence is emitted at the negative electrode when a current in excess of (approximate)10 μA passes through the sample, indicating that the majority of carriers are holes. Low voltage ac measurements show that the equivalent circuit for the sample is the bulk resistance in series with the junction capacitance (representing the blocking contacts) connected in parallel with a capacitance, which represents the dielectric constant of the sample. The values determined for the bulk resistance in both dc and ac experiments are in good agreement. The electrical conductivity of Al2O3:Mg crystals increases linearly with the concentration of [Mg]0 centers, regardless of the amount of other impurities also present in the crystals, and is four times higher in the c(parallel) than in the c⊥ direction. The conductivity is thermally activated with an activation energy of 0.68 eV, which is independent of: (1) the [Mg]0 content, (2) the crystallographic orientation, and (3) the concentration of other impurities. These results favor the small-polaron-motion mechanism. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the temperature interval 300–773 K, ac and dc electrical measurements show a phenomenally large enhancement of the electrical conductivity of otherwise excellent insulator Al2O3 crystals when doped with magnesium impurities. The conductivity increases linearly with the concentration of hole-trapped [Mg]0 centers and is four times higher in the direction parallel to the crystallographic c axis than in the perpendicular direction. The conductivity activation energy is 0.68 eV, independent of both [Mg]0 content and crystallographic orientation. Electroluminescence experiments indicate that holes are the majority carriers. These results favor the small-polaron-motion mechanism. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Phosphorus (H3P32O4) absorption was studied in detached bean leaves and leaf discs and later computed per unit surface area and per unit edge length vis-a-vis discs of 4–18 mm diameters. Not only absorption through edge predominantly contributed to total disc absorption it was also directly proportional to disc diameter.

Notes: Abstract Conditions for the electrodeposition of59Co and57Co on stainless steel foils have been studied. A set of electrolytic parameters has been determined to get a reasonably good electrodeposited sample. The57Co electrodeposited foil was then introduced in a quartz tube to be annealed in an argon flow. The final product was a 11 μCi Mössbauer source for college experiments which was succesfully tested by obtaining spectra of stainless steel and sodium nitroprusside.

Notes: Abstract. Collision processes between two gold clusters are investigated using classical molecular dynamics in combination with embedded atom (EA) potentials, after checking the reliability of the EA results by contrasting them with first principles calculations. The Au projectiles considered are both single atoms (N = 1) and clusters of N = 2, 12, 13 and 14 atoms. The targets contain N = 12, 13 and 14 gold atoms. The collision energy E and impact parameter b are chosen within a range such that the three regimes we are interested in studying (fusion, scattering and fragmentation) are realized. The results of the collision processes are described and analyzed in detail, and compared with previous work.
