Notes: Total integral scattering cross sections have been measured for Li2 molecules in selected rotational and vibrational states up to v=21. The vibrationally highly excited states with energies up to 80% of the dissociation energy were prepared by Franck–Condon laser pumping. With increasing vibrational quantum number the observed cross sections show first a 10% decrease followed by a 20%–25% rise. A model potential has been developed based on an ab initio potential for the vibrational ground state to account for the effect of vibrational stretching. The results provide for the first time direct information on the bond-distance dependence r of the complete potential hypersurface V(R,r,γ) (R distance between centers of mass and γ angle between r and R) of an atom–molecule system.

Notes: Light scattering in a viscoelastic liquid is studied. The change from liquid to solid-like Brillouin spectra is explained using frequency dependent elasto-optic constants. Within a standard dielectric model microscopic formulas for these generalized frequency dependent constants and the spectra are obtained. The phenomenological pictures of light scattering in an amorphous solid and in a liquid are obtained as high and low frequency limits. The observation of a Rytov Dip in a system of optically isotropic particles is predicted for slow enough viscoelastic relaxation. Approximations using the Mode Coupling Theory allow the spectra to be expressed in terms of density fluctuations alone. The predictions of this theory for the spectra are discussed.

Notes: Current sources in the human body can be localized by measuring the biomagnetic fields with multichannel SQUID systems. Important system aspects are the noise level, the ambient field suppression, the dynamic range, the reliability, the number of channels, and the arrangement of gradiometers. From the user's point of view the most important quality factor is the accuracy with which a current dipole can be localized. A test procedure is proposed to determine the localization power of the system. A 31-channel-SQUID system is presented together with the results of the test. The crucial parts of the system determining the accuracy are pointed out.

Notes: A simple distributed feedback (DFB) laser line narrowing arrangement consisting of an adapted coupler and a cleaved fiber end resonator has been realized. Linewidths below 100 kHz have been obtained for different commercial 1300 nm and 1550 nm DFB lasers.

Description: Plasma amplification of low energy, a short (∼100–500 fs) laser pulse by an energetic long (∼10 ps) pulse via strong coupling Stimulated Brillouin Backscattering is investigated with an extensive analysis of one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Parameters relevant to nowadays experimental conditions are investigated. The obtained seed pulse spectra are analyzed as a function of the interaction conditions such as plasma profile, pulses delay, and seed or pulse duration. The factors affecting the amount of energy transferred are determined, and the competition between Brillouin-based amplification and parasitic Raman backscattering is analyzed, leading to the optimization of the interaction conditions.

Description: A description of the new mineral innsbruckite, Mn 33 (Si 2 O 5 ) 14 (OH) 38 , a hydrous manganese phyllosilicate found in Tyrol, Austria is given. The crystal structure was determined by single-crystal synchrotron radiation diffraction experiments at the X06DA beamline at the Swiss Light Source (Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland). The space group is Cm and lattice parameters are a = 17.2760(19), b = 35.957(5), c = 7.2560(8) Å, β = 91.359(7)°, V = 4506.1(10) Å 3 , Z = 2. Innsbruckite belongs to the group of modulated 1:1 layer silicates and is chemically and structurally quite closely related to bementite, Mn 7 (Si 2 O 5 ) 3 (OH) 8 . The chemical analysis revealed a close to ideal composition with only minor amounts of Al, Fe and Mg. Using Liebau's nomenclature for silicate classification the silicate anion can be described as an unbranched siebener single layer. Innsbruckite shows a complex topology of the silicate sheet, exhibiting 4-, 5-, 6- and 8-membered rings. The silicate sheet is fully characterized using vertex symbols, and its topology is compared to those in other complex sheet silicates. Furthermore, the structural investigation is complemented with Raman spectroscopic studies.
