Notes: We have grown clean N-salicylideneaniline (SA) single crystals large enough for optical measurements. The photochromism of a SA single crystal is investigated at different optical polarizations. Based on theoretical calculations, the structure configurations of the SA molecules in the colored keto form are analyzed. When an ultraviolet (UV) light is irradiated on the sample at 200 K, about 40% of the keto form molecules are found to be in the cis configuration and about 60% of them in the trans configuration. The activation energies of the single crystal are obtained in different optical polarizations, and the energy-level schemes of the photochromic reactions are established. Investigation of a single crystal can provide us with new information on the photochromism of SA, because SA molecules are regularly arranged and the environment of each molecule is the same. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A four-segmented longitudinal discharge low pressure N2 laser (337 nm) is reported in which automatic spark preionization and an LC inversion-charge transfer excitation circuit are employed. Its laser output power was nearly doubled when the techniques developed here were used. The characteristics of the peak laser output powers are interpreted qualitatively, with the electron densities calculated from the observed discharge voltages and currents.

Notes: A gold neutral beam probe system which uses a microchannel plate (MCP) as a beam detector is being constructed in order to measure the electrostatic potential at the inner mirror throat (IMT) of the plug/barrier cell in the tandem mirror. The MCP detector was newly designed so as to be able to be used in the IMT strong magnetic field. The characteristics of the MCP gain were measured on a test stand with the strong magnetic field. The characteristic curves of the relative MCP gain were described as functions of the magnetic field strength, the MCP bias voltage, and the angle between the magnetic field and the capillary axis of the MCP. It was found that the newly designed MCP detector was useful for the potential measurement at the IMT region. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A charge exchange neutral particle analyzer including a newly designed multichannel 63.6° cylindrical electrostatic energy analyzer was constructed. Since the energy analyzer can simultaneously adopt a small radius of cylindrical electrodes and a large width of an entrance slit, high incident current can be analyzed while the size of the analyzer remain compact. Characteristics of the analyzer were investigated using hydrogen beam with energies from about 0.5 to 5 keV. The experimental results are compared well with the numerical analysis. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A contactless method is developed for high-sensitivity magnetoresistance measurement in pulsed high fields. The resistivity is measured by observing transmission of a radio-frequency field through a thin specimen. The transmission rate is analytically given as a function of the resistivity within the classical skin-effect regime. By use of a high-frequency (0.1–100 MHz), electrical noise coming from pulsed magnetic fields can be rejected effectively and the sensitivity of the measurement is improved by at least a factor of 100 compared with that of a conventional dc four-terminal method. The present method is available for the measurements on superconductors, magnetic metals, and any other materials with short collision time in high magnetic fields. Upper critical fields and magnetoresistance of recent high Tc superconductors Y-Ba-Cu-O are measured up to 40 T.

Notes: Barium-filled skutterudites BayCo4Sb12 with an anomalously large filling fraction of up to y=0.44 have been synthesized. The lattice parameters increase linearly with Ba content. Magnetic susceptibility data show that Ba0.44Co4Sb12 is paramagnetic, which implies that some of the Co atoms in BayCo4Sb12 have acquired a magnetic moment. The presence of the two different valence states of Co (Co3+ and Co2+) leads to the anomalously large barium filling fraction even without extra charge compensation. All samples show n-type conduction. The electrical conductivity increases with increasing the Ba filling fraction. The lattice thermal conductivity of BayCo4Sb12 is significantly depressed as compared to unfilled Co4Sb12. The dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, increases with increasing temperature reaching a maximum value of 1.1 for Ba0.24Co4Sb12 at 850 K. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ion distributions in a loss cone are measured in the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985)]. When Alfvén ion cyclotron (AIC) modes are excited in the central cell, enhanced end-loss of ions is observed for a characteristic energy region which agrees well with the resonant ion cyclotron condition with the AIC wave. From measurements of pitch angle distributions of end-loss ions, it is found that the loss cone is filled for this characteristic energy region, indicating an ion diffusion in a velocity space induced by the AIC wave. Magnitude of the observed additional end-loss increases with increase in the amplitude of the AIC modes. In the present experimental parameters in GAMMA 10, the AIC wave effect on the axial ion confinement is not serious. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thermal expansion, high-field magnetization, and susceptibility measurements have been made for MnAs0.7Sb0.3. The thermal expansion measurements show that the spontaneous magnetostriction is large and anisotropic below Tc. The spontaneous magnetostriction at 0 K is estimated to be 1.2×10−2 for a axis, −0.8×10−2 for c axis, and 1.6×10−2 for the volume. The spontaneous magnetization decreases sharply in the narrow temperature region below Tc=230 K. All the spontaneous magnetostrictions are found to be proportional to the square of spontaneous magnetization. The magnetization curves measured in a high field up to 40 T show the metamagnetic-like transitions at temperatures above Tc, and they are almost perfectly reproduced by an equation H=A1σ+A2σ3+A3σ5, where H is the applied field and σ is the relative magnetization. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Bi(-Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films were prepared on MgO(100) single-crystal substrates by electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma sputtering at substrate temperatures from room temperature to 590 °C. Pb-doped superconducting as-grown films were obtained above 560 °C. The Tc values of the Pb-doped films prepared at 570–590 °C were 58–64 K which increased with increasing substrate temperature. Pb-undoped as-grown films obtained at 590 °C showed superconduction (Tc =30 K), but the films obtained below 580 °C were semiconductors. The grain sizes and contents of the 37 A(ring) phase (110 K phase) were increased by the Pb doping into the as-grown Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films.

Notes: Absorption and luminescence saturation of confined excitons are measured using a single-beam method for CuCl microcrystals with various radii embedded in NaCl single-crystalline matrices. From the excitation-intensity and microcrystal-size dependencies of their saturation, the effective saturation density of excitons, which is inversely proportional to the magnitude of optical nonlinearity, proves to be inversely proportional to the volume of microcrystals with effective radii of less than 5 nm at 77 K. Therefore, the optical nonlinearity of these microcrystals is not a function of microcrystal radii, but of the number of excitons created in a microcrystal, indicating the characteristic nature of coherent exciton confinement. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
