Description: Ultrafast energy relaxation process in Bi 2 Te 3 thin films is studied using a collinear two color pump-probe technique. The coherent optical phonon is enhanced and destroyed by changing the separation times of double pump pulses. The non-oscillatory component of the reflectivity trace after the second pump pulse shows a distinct difference with and without the presence of coherent optical phonons, thus providing a direct evidence of the effect of optical phonon on the hot carrier relaxation process. The deduced characteristic times are systematically smaller when coherent optical phonons are involved in the energy transfer process. Comparatively, the conventional relaxation process is relatively slow, which is explained by the screening effect of the incoherent optical phonon. This work suggests that the energy relaxation can be manipulated through the excitation of coherent optical phonons.

Description: The compression behaviors of dense neon and krypton plasmas over a wide pressure-temperature range are investigated by self-consistent fluid variational theory. The ionization degree and equation of state of dense neon and krypton are calculated in the density-temperature range of 0.01–10 g/cm 3 and 4–50 kK. A region of thermodynamic instability is found which is related to the plasma phase transition. The calculated shock adiabat and principal Hugoniot of liquid krypton are in good agreement with available experimental data. The predicted results of shock-compressed liquid neon are presented, which provide a guide for dynamical experiments or numerical first-principle calculations aimed at studying the compression properties of liquid neon in the partial ionization regime.

Description: Supercritical fluids have intriguing behaviors at extreme pressure and temperature conditions, prompting the need for thermodynamic properties of supercritical fluid xenon (SCF) under shock compression. Double-shock experimental data on SCF xenon in the 140 GPa pressure range were directly measured by means of a multi-channel pyrometer and a Doppler-pins-system. It entered the so-called warm dense region. We found that the shock compressed SCF Xe had higher dynamic compression and higher number density than that of liquid Xe at same shock pressure. The larger compressibility of SCF Xe in our experiments could be explained that the increase of electronic excitations and ionizations leaded to a large drop of thermal pressure and a softening of Hugoniot. The high pressure phase diagram of xenon was depicted with the aid of the degeneracy, coupling parameter, and current available experiments on the pressure-temperature plane.

Description: Optical properties and phase transitions of (Pb 1−1.5 x La x )(Zr 0.42 Sn 0.40 Ti 0.18 )O 3 (PLZST 100 x /42/40/18) ceramics with different compositions have been investigated by temperature dependent spectroscopic ellipsometry. Two interband critical points ( E c p 1 and E c p 2 ) located at about 3.9 and 5.1 eV can be obtained by fitting standard line shapes to the second derivatives of the complex dielectric functions. Based on the band-to-band transitions, the phase diagram of PLZST ceramics can be well presented. Moreover, a peculiar incommensurate antiferroelectric state has been found to exist above the temperature of the normal commensurate antiferroelectric tetragonal structure. It can be stable below Curie temperature, evolving slowly with decreasing temperature towards the commensurate structure, which is due to strong pinning of incommensurate domain walls. The phenomena can result from a competition between ferroelectric ordering and antiferroelectric ordering caused by the lanthanum modification.

Description: A small helicon source, 5 cm in diameter and 5 cm long, using a permanent magnet (PM) to create the DC magnetic field B , is investigated for its possible use as an ion spacecraft thruster. Such ambipolar thrusters do not require a separate electron source for neutralization. The discharge is placed in the far-field of the annular PM, where B is fairly uniform. The plasma is ejected into a large chamber, where the ion energy distribution is measured with a retarding-field energy analyzer. The resulting specific impulse is lower than that of Hall thrusters but can easily be increased to relevant values by applying to the endplate of the discharge a small voltage relative to spacecraft ground.

Description: In this work, based on wide bandgap Ga 2 O 3 films, we demonstrated a fully transparent bipolar resistive random access memory (RRAM) device with very high average transmittance of 91.7% in the visible region. The semiconducting In-Ga-Zn-O (IGZO) films were used as symmetric electrodes to reduce sneak current. Different I-V performance will introduce a change in the overall oxygen vacancy distribution by an opposite polarity of electroforming voltage. The temperature dependent of I-V characteristics will be fitted to the hopping conduction mechanism for both of the high-resistance states (HRS) and low-resistance states (LRS) with semiconducting nature. The activation energy and trap spacing of LRS were lower and shorter than that of HRS. A model of resistive switching mechanism related to correlated barrier hopping theory has been proposed for the fully transparent IGZO/Ga 2 O 3 /IGZO RRAM device.

Description: Bow shock structures are important to various hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) phenomena in geophysics and astrophysics. The formation and propagation of bow shocks around the lightning return stroke channel are investigated based on the self-similar motion theory and simulated with a two-dimensional Eulerian finite volume resistive radiation MHD code. In this framework, as verification of theoretical models, the evolving structures of many quantities, such as the plasma density, temperature, pressure, shock velocity, and magnetic field, can be obtained, which present all the characteristics of bow shocks in the lightning return stroke processes. The evolution characteristics and the configuration of the curved return stroke channels, e.g., the non-ideal effects and the scaling laws, are discussed in detail. The results may have applications for some observed features of the return stroke channels and other phenomena in the lightning discharge plasmas.

Description: Controllable modification of biological molecules and supramolecular components of connective tissue are important for biophysical and biomedical applications. Through the use of second harmonic generation imaging, two-photon fluorescence microscopy, and spectrofluorimetry, we found that hypericin, a natural pigment, induces photosensitized destruction of collagen fibers but does not affect elastic fibers and lipids in chicken tendon, skin, and blood vessels. We demonstrated the dynamics and efficiency of collagen photomodification and investigated mechanisms of this processes. Our results suggest that hypericin–mediated photoprocesses in biological tissues may be useful in biomedical applications that require selective modification of connective tissues.

Description: The hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) films have been fabricated as resistive switching medium by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technology. The constructed Ag/nc-Si:H/Pt structure exhibits stable three nonvolatile resistance states. Tristate resistive states with large ratio 10 2 and 10 5 , less variation of resistance, and long retention exceeding 2.3 × 10 5  s are observed in Ag/nc-Si:H/Pt stack. The temperature dependence of high resistance state (HRS) and intermediate resistance state (IRS) both show semiconductor behavior, and the temperature dependence of low resistance state (LRS) represents metallic property. Fitting results demonstrated that the conduction mechanism of HRS, IRS, and LRS showed space charge limited conduction (SCLC), tunneling, and ohmic characteristics, respectively. The discrete Ag filament with Si nanocrystalline and complete Ag filament is proposed to be responsible for the performance IRS and LRS. We supposed that the Ag + ions prefer to be reduced to Ag atoms near the Si nanocrystalline location. Si nanocrystalline between Ag nanoparticles contribute to the current transport at IRS.
