Notizen: The magnetic phase diagram of chromium alloys sensitively depends on both electron damping and the presence of an electron reservoir. If the damping energy Γ vanishes and the power ρ of the reservoir is infinite, then lightly doped CrMn alloys would experience a first-order transition from an incommensurate (I) to a commensurate (C) spin-density wave (SDW) state with decreasing temperature. Either damping or a finite reservoir may flip the phase boundary from one side of the triple point to the other, allowing a commensurate-to-incommensurate transition with decreasing temperature as observed experimentally. Both damping and a finite reservoir suppress the first-order jumps in the SDW order parameter and wave vector. When ρ≤2, the C-I transition is second order for all temperatures. When ρ(approximately-greater-than)2, the transition is second order near the tricritical point but first order at lower temperatures. Unlike electron damping, an electron reservoir does not shift the paramagnetic phase boundary and triple point.

Notizen: The spin excitations about the two incommensurate wavevectors of the spin-density-wave (SDW) state in Cr are studied for the first time within the random-phase approximation. Transverse spin-wave (SW) modes and longitudinal phason modes are associated with the rotational and translational symmetries of Cr. While both mode frequencies vanish at the SDW ordering wavevectors, only the SW mode with linear dispersion and mode velocity c=vF/(square root of)3 is undamped for nonzero frequencies. As in a local-moment system, the SW mode corresponds to the rigid rotation of the local magnetic moments. The phason modes have a nearly linear dispersion at low frequencies with velocity cph〈c. As T approaches TN, cph approaches c. Phason modes have been observed in the longitudinally polarized SDW state below 120 K in pure Cr and are responsible for a 60 meV peak in the cross sections midway between the satellites. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In order to understand the effects of density fluctuations in composite systems, we have studied the effects of compression rate on the final density and density variations in a system of hard spheres. Systems of 900 and 1800 mono-sized spheres are placed in a box with periodic boundary conditions in the x and y directions and walls at z=0 and z=w(t). Using hard-sphere interactions between the particles, the cell is compressed at a constant rate κ∝−dw/dt under isothermal conditions until the pressure diverges and an overlap occurs between the particles or with the walls. The final particle volume is then subdivided into smaller cells, each containing about 15 particles with a local density p(x). Macroscopic fluctuations in the density are measured by the coarseness parameter Cp=σp/p¯, where σp is the standard deviation of the local densities and p¯ is the average density. Surprisingly, the coarseness reaches a maximum at intermediate compression rates and, within the range of compression rates studied, the most homogeneous particle packings are generated by fast compressions. For compression rates above 1, the distribution function of the local densities is a Gaussian with a mean close to the random dense packing value p(x)≈0.64. For compression rates below 1, local regions vary from randomly dense-packed [p(x)≈0.64] to close-packed [ p(x)≈0.74] with a correspondingly high coarseness. So for κ〈1, the distribution function is bimodal with peaks near the random-dense packing and the close-packing values. At the highest compression rates, the pressure exhibits no anomalies and the radial distribution function shows no signs of crystallization. Consequently, the densities and coarseness are very reproducible. At slower compression rates with κ〈1, large variations in the final densities and coarsenesses coincide with the formation of local crystallites in portions of the volume. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We present a model which gives a simple interpretation of already published band-structure calculations in transition-metal disilicides (i.e., XSi2, where X stands for Co, Ni, Cr, or W). This approach, based on wave function symmetries, gives physical insight on the insulating, metallic, or semimetallic electronic nature of these silicides. In this theoretical frame, WSi2 is predicted to be a strictly compensated semimetal. Extensive electrical measurements performed on various WSi2 thin films are consistent with this prediction and indicate that the free-carrier density is less than 3×1021 cm−3.

Notizen: A self-consistent calculation of the electronic structure of an AlxGa1−xAs /GaAs heterostructure of finite thickness for x〈0.25 can show an incomplete transfer of electrons from the doped AlGaAs to the GaAs. This makes the calculation of the low-temperature mobility more complicated than in conventional heterostructures or quantum wells. Suitable approximations for this case are discussed and corresponding results are presented. It is shown that while the low-temperature mobility is not too much influenced by the exact shape of the wave function when only intrasubband scattering plays a role, this mobility depends strongly on the detailed shapes of the electronic wave functions when intersubband scattering must be taken into account; this makes recent mobility calculations using variational wave functions questionable in the latter case.

Notizen: We have investigated a silicon-based near-infrared photodetector using a waveguide with strong optical confinement. The high-difference index waveguide is obtained with a silicon–on–insulator substrate. The optically active region consists of self-assembled Ge/Si islands embedded in a p-i-n junction. The Ge/Si islands grown by high-pressure chemical-vapor deposition exhibit a broad photoluminescence and electroluminescence which are resonant around 1.5 μm. The photoluminescence and electroluminescence energies are correlated to the island size and to the island composition using a six-band k⋅p calculation. The spectral responsivity of the detectors is measured in a front facet coupling geometry with a broadband source and with semiconductor laser diodes. For a 0 V applied bias, responsivities of 25 and 0.25 mA/W are measured at room temperature at 1.3 and 1.55 μm, respectively. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The conductivity and Hall effect of p-type doped Zn(1−x)MnxTe layers are described and analyzed in terms of a two-fluid model where part of the carriers are weakly localized as bound magnetic polarons. At low temperature, the Hall effect is dominated by the spin-dependent component (extraordinary Hall effect), in good agreement with a crude estimate taking into account the properties of the valence band. The long range ferromagnetic interaction appears to be induced by the weakly localized holes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new technique for trapping of fast (keV) ion beams is presented. The trap, which is electrostatic, works on a principle similar to that of optical resonators. The main advantages of the trap are the possibility to trap fast beams without need of deceleration, the well-defined beam direction, the easy access to the trapped beam by various probes, and the simple requirement in terms of external beam injection. Results of preliminary experiments related to the radiative cooling of molecular ions are also reported. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: During lower hybrid current drive on tokamaks, suprathermal electrons are generated that emit hard x-ray bremsstrahlung. A pinhole camera has been installed on the PBX-M tokamak that records 128×128 pixel images of the hard x-ray plasma bremsstrahlung emitted in the 30–200 keV photon energy range. The camera has a temporal resolution of 3 ms and a spatial resolution of 3–4 cm in the plasma. The detector is a 230-mm-diam hard x-ray image intensifier. This instrument has identified hollow radiation profiles on PBX-M, indicating off-axis current drive. A detailed account of the construction of the hard x-ray camera, its operation, and its performance is given.
