Notes: We implemented tip–sample distance control in a scanning evanescent microwave probe for nonlinear dielectric microscopy. With the analytic expression of the tip–sample capacitance as a function of tip–sample distance, we can quantitatively regulate the tip–sample separation and independently measure the dielectric nonlinearity by application of an ac bias voltage. Simultaneous imaging of topography and ferroelectric domains has been demonstrated on periodically poled LiNbO3 single crystals. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Single-layer Fe-N films were deposited onto DC biased glass substrates at room temperature by reactive rf magnetron sputtering in an N2-Ar atmosphere. The Ar pressure was fixed at 6 mTorr and the properties were investigated as a function of N2 flow rate (R). X-ray diffraction and transmission electron diffraction were used to identify phases in the films. At R=0, the saturation magnetic moment density σS measured in a vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) was 210 emu/g, within experimental error equal to the value for bulk α-Fe, and only a single phase with the bulk lattice constant of α-Fe was detected. At R=5 sccm, σS=227 emu/g, and an α-Fe(N) phase with a ∼1% expanded lattice constant was detected. At R=15 sccm, σS reached a maximum of 247 emu/g and x-ray and transmission electron diffraction gave clear evidence of the Fe16N2 phase in addition to α-Fe(N). At R=30 sccm, σS dropped to 196 emu/g, and the diffraction data showed α-Fe, α-Fe(N), and a significant fraction of Fe4N. The value of σS calculated from the volume fractions of each phase estimated from transmission electron microscopy statistical sampling of single grain diffraction quantitatively agreed, within the experimental error, with the measured value.

Notes: Large coercive fields have been obtained in melt-spun Co-Zr(Hf)-B based alloys. The highest coercivities have been observed in Co76 Zr18 B3 Si3 and Co78 Hf16 B3 Si3 samples with values 6.7 and 6.5 kOe, respectively. The saturation magnetization for both samples is estimated to be around 60 emu/g. Thermomagnetic data showed the presence of two phases with the major phase having a Curie temperature at around 450 °C. TEM and SEM studies showed a microstructure consisting of a mixture of two phases with the grain size in the range of 1000–5000 A(ring). The origin of the high coercivity is believed to be due to the fine grain microstructure leading to a single-domain particle-type behavior.

Notes: Sputtered Co, CoB and CoZrB alloys in thin-film and multilayer form have been prepared using Cu as a spacer. All of the multilayers show a weak contribution to the magnetic anisotropy from the interface which favors perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a strong contribution from the bulk which favors in-plane anisotropy. All the multilayers also show a stronger coercivity perpendicular to the film than in the plane of the film. The coercivity perpendicular to the film shows a dependence on magnetic layer thickness with the coercivity decreasing with decreasing thickness and this is discussed in terms of the magnetic domain size which is restricted by the magnetic layer thickness. CoZrB/Cu multilayers show the smallest coercivity of the above multilayer systems.

Notes: A theoretical model analysis for a recently developed scanning evanescent microwave microscope has been performed. The result enables a quantitative microscopy of local complex dielectric constant profiles for dielectric materials. Various experiments were performed and found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results. The estimation of intrinsic resolution of the microscope suggests that nanometer spatial resolution is achievable. System analysis gives a limiting sensitivity of about δε/ε∼1×10−5. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Combinatorial libraries of parallel-plate capacitors, consisting of Pt and La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 electrodes and a doped BaxSr1−xTiO3 dielectric layer, have been fabricated and analyzed to systematically study the effects of dopants on device performance. Epitaxial heterostructure libraries with sharp interfaces were generated from amorphous layers on LaAlO3 substrates. Two hundred and forty different host/dopant combinations were synthesized on a 1/2 in. by 1/2 in. substrate, with 23 capacitors for each combination. Addition of 1.5 mol % W was found to increase the figure of merit (ε/Ileak) 220-fold and reduce the high-frequency (MHz and GHz) loss tangent by fourfold. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have developed a means of tip–sample distance regulation for a scanning evanescent microwave microscope over conductive samples. Changes in resonant frequency and quality factor are measured, where changes in resonant frequency are related to the tip–sample capacitance and changes in quality factor are related to microwave absorption. With the analytical expression of the tip–sample capacitance as a function of tip–sample distance, we can quantitatively regulate the tip–sample separation. We demonstrated simultaneous noncontact imaging of topography and surface resistance with high spatial resolution. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of submicron-scale morphology on media signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) has been evaluated for Cr/CoCrTa thin films deposited on super-smooth Al/NiP substrates. Two types of morphology and topography variations were studied. First, the underlayer X was made either smooth or rough in the submicron scale, and the subsequent Cr and magnetic layers deposition replicated the topography of layer X. For the second case, two different buffer layers were deposited with flat and smooth topography in the submicron scale. The subsequently deposited Cr/CoCrTa layers are either morphologically homogeneous or inhomogeneous. In both cases SNR measurements show a dramatic dependence on the morphology. It is concluded that the submicron-scale morphology variation was a profound contributor to the difference in media SNR. To make high-performance ultrahigh-density media, morphology homogeneity in the submicron-scale is essential. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The technique of "field sweep-rate dependence of coercivity" together with the delta-M curves, transmission electron microscopy, and media noise measurement have been employed to reveal the correlation among the magnetic switching volume, physical grain size, intergrain interaction, and noise properties. The switching volume for both CoCrTa and CoCrPtTa films was found to be ∼15 nm in diameter, and weakly dependent on grain size and coercivity for the systems studied. In films with physical grain size larger than the switching volume, strong intergrain interaction and high media noise is observed. In films with the physical grain size close to the switching volume, smaller interactions and lower media noise is found. It is argued that a change of the grain size results in a change in the nature of the magnetic interactions. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A library of 256 differently doped thin films of (BaxSr1−x)TiO3 (where 0.5〈x〈1.0) was generated on a 1 in.×1 in. LaAlO3 substrate using multistep thin-film deposition techniques together with a quaternary masking strategy. Appropriate postannealing processing afforded high-quality epitaxial thin films. The microwave properties, i.e., dielectric constant and loss tangent, of samples in the library were characterized with a scanning-tip microwave near-field microscope at 1 GHz, and the results were found to be consistent with measurements made with interdigital electrodes. Specific dopants were found to significantly affect the dielectric constant and tangent loss. Tungsten, in particular, reduces the tangent loss. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
