Notes: Summary Closed loop diagrams were obtained with ternary systems containing two interacting copolymers (styrene-4-vinylpyridine / styrene-methacrylic acid or methyl methacrylate-4-vinylpyridine / methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid) and a solvent (dioxane or chloroform). Viscosimetric interaction parameters were determined in both solvents. Higher interactions in chloroform than in dioxane were evidenced from greater positive Δ b23. A single glass transition temperature obtained with the pair of copolymers of styrene-methacrylic acid / butyl methacrylate-4-vinylpyridine confirmed the compatibility of these copolymers in the solid state.

Notes: Summary Measurements of both apparent molecular weight and second virial coefficient of solutions of styrene-4-vinylpyridine copolymer in ethyl benzoate containing varying concentrations of methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer isorefractive with ethyl benzoate were carried out by low angle laser light scattering. The apparent molecular weight depended very little on the acidic copolymer concentration. The second virial coefficient first decreased rapidly, then increased and finally tends to level off as the acidic copolymer concentration was raised. Great association is observed when the visible polymer is in excess.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Reaktion von 5-Amino-4-cyano-3-phenylpyrazol (1) mit Acrylnitril oder Ethylacrylate ergibt 4-Cyano-3-phenyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-5-oxopyrazolo-[1,5-a]-pyrimidin (2).
Notes: Abstract 5-Amino-4-cyano-3-phenylpyrazole (1) reacts with acrylonitrile or ethyl acrylate to yield 4-cyano-3-phenyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-5-oxopyrazolo-[1,5-a]-pyrimidine (2). With urea, thiourea and ethyl acetoacetate1 gives the pyrazolopyrimidine derivatives6a,6b, and7 respectively. On the other hand, compound1 reacted with benzoylisothiocyanate to give the corresponding thiourea derivative4. Diazotized1 was coupled with malononitrile and ethyl cyanoacetate to yield the pyrazolopyrimidine derivatives10 and11, respectively, whereas on coupling with α-chloro acetoacetic ester and with acetylacetone the hydrazones12 and13 were obtained.

Notes: Summary A report by Bullock and coworkers has emphasized the need for standardization of the CK assay in carrier detection for DMD. A collaborative study, according to a well-specified design and involving two laboratories in Paris and Lyon, indicates that the reliability of this assay can be improved provided that special attention is paid to information about participating subjects, laboratory protocol, and repeated sampling. On a random sample of young women, mean and variance of 1n(CK) are 1.66 and 0.015 respectively. Within and between variance components are in a 3:4 ratio, homogeneous between populations. Additional use of a common test serum should insure good reliability of this assay among laboratories.

Notes: Summary The extraction of iron(III) and cobalt(II) from hydrochloric acid solutions by Hyamine 1622, a quaternary ammonium halide, in dichloroethane is described. The effect of acidity, salting-out agent, metal and extradant concentrations and temperature, has been investigated. The extraction mechanism is discussed in the light of results obtained. Separation of iron(III) and cobalt(II) is also outlined.

Notes: Summary The spermatozoon of Amblyomma hebraeum is about 200 μm long and comprises: (1) a thick, club-shaped anterior part, about 20 μm long bearing at its apex a “tactile” hemisphere, and (2) an elongated tail-like part, about 180 μm long. The surface of the “tactile” hemisphere is covered by numerous bulbous expansions, attached to it by short stalks. The base of the hemisphere is surrounded by a fringe of thin motile processes; the remaining surface of the spermatozoon is covered with long cellular processes which run more or less parallel to one another. The membrane-associated particles found on the membrane beneath the cellular processes are regularly arranged as groups of parallel strands. The external surface of the so-called “peripheral granules”, as revealed by freeze-etching, is smooth with a very small number of particles. Internally the particles exhibit a regular hexagonal pattern which has not been observed, so far, on any other membrane of these sperm cells. The regional specialization of the spermatozoon surface membrane in relation to sperm motility is discussed. The results obtained indicate that processes of three types: (1) bulbous expansions, (2) motile processes, and (3) cellular processes are regional specializations, all engaged in aspects of sperm motility.

Notes: Summary A sensitive, specific and rapid GLC assay for khellin in serum and urine has been developed using flame ionization The method involves the addition of hyoscine as an internal standard, extraction with chloroform and the use of a 3% OV-17 on Gas Chromosorb column. The suitability of this procedure for serum sample analysis from rats after oral administration of the drug is reported.
