Notizen: The Sierra Nevada core, located in the Betic hinterland, features a N-S large-scale open antiform with a central relatively uplifted highly extended domain placed between two less extended domains (in the east and in the west) dipping eastwards and westwards, respectively. The core-bounding detachment system formed during the Serravallian (15–11 Ma) in an episode of ENE-WSW extension. The ESCI-Beticas 2 deep seismic reflection profile, a transect through the core, shows a highly reflective deep crust overlying a subhorizontal Moho, and a fairly transparent upper crust and upper mantle. The lack of Moho relief beneath this area, with differential values for supra-crustal thinning, suggests a mechanism of intracrustal isostatic compensation. Surface geology data together with seismic imaging indicate intracrustal flow and upward doming as a response to footwall unloading accompanying the middle Miocene supracrustal extension. A prominent mid-crustal reflector (MCR) is deemed to represent a decoupling zone between the upper and the deep crust. Subsequent N-S shortening and associated folding occurred in the late Miocene. The interference pattern of this folding over the middle Miocene core produced the current E–W dome-shaped tectonic windows where the deepest complex of the Betic hinterland crops out.

Notizen: The thermal diffusivity and conductivity of cooked tortillas processed under different conditions were measured at room temperature using a proposed open-photoacoustic cell (OPC) detection technique. Samples were cut from cooked tortillas and exposed to air for different times prior to measurements. Variations in thermal diffusivity inversely correlated with cooking time. Lime appeared to increase the degree of crosslinking, raising thermal diffusivity and decreasing cooking time. By careful process modification a measure of control could be used to improve the heat conduction properties of tortillas.

Notizen: Freezing ensures the longterm preservation of fruits, but usually destroys cell compartmentation of fruit tissues, thereby increasing the probability of undesirable reactions. The use of cryoprotectants/cryostabilizers may reduce ice crystal damage by modifying the glass transition of frozen fruit or reducing freezable water content. The use of vacuum impregnation to introduce cryopreservatives into the fruits was tested. Apple samples were vacuum impregnated with concentrated grape musts and pectin solutions, by applying vacuum (50 mbars) for 5 min and afterwards restoring atmospheric pressure while fruit remained immersed. Most compositional, mechanical and structural properties improved as a result of vacuum impregnation.

Notizen: The effect of mill type (Knife and Hammer mill) and screen size (500 and 800μ) on properties of masa and tortillas from two types of corn (dent and floury endosperm) were evaluated. The traditional process was a control. Particle size and starch damage were highest for knife mill with screen opening 500μ. Tortillas from dent corn had better quality than those from floury corn. Cutting force, tensile strength, and rollability of tortillas from extruded masa from dent corn hammer milled with 800μ screen, and those made with floury corn knife milled with 500μ screen, compared favorably with traditional tortillas. Overall quality score correlated with starch damage, adhesiveness and peak viscosity.

Notizen: A peroxidase oxidizing Mn2+ (MnP) is described for the first time in Bjerkandera adusta, a fungus efficiently degrading xenobiotic compounds. The MnP appeared as two isoenzymes, which were purified to homogeneity together with two lignin peroxidases (LiP). Their N-terminal sequences were identical, but the MnP isoenzymes showed more basic isoelectric points and differences in amino acid composition and catalytic properties. The B. adusta LiP is similar to LiP from Phanerochaete chrysosporium. However, the interest of the MnP described here is related to its ability to catalyze Mn2+-mediated as well as Mn2+-independent reactions on aromatic compounds, which may be of use for applications in biotechnology and environmental technology.

Notizen: The regulation by phytochrome of stem elongation in light-grown plants depends on gibberellins (GAs). To investigate whether this is mediated by a change in GA metabolism, the effect of the GA biosynthesis inhibitor LAB 198 999 (an acylcyclohexadione derivative) on the end-of-day far-red (FR) response in cowpea (Vigna sinensis L.) epicotyl explants has been investigated. Growth of epicotyl explants of light-grown seedlings was enhanced when treated with far-red light before incubation in the dark (end-of-day FR effect). Low doses of LAB 198 999 (0.05 and 0.5 μg explant−1) reduced the effect of FR, whereas 5 to 50 μg explant−1 stimulated elongation of both red light (R)- and FR-treated epicotyl explants while nullifying the differences between R and FR treatments. In paclobutrazol-treated epicotyl explants, FR enhanced the response to applied GA1 and GA20, whereas LAB 198 999 increased the activity of GA1 and decreased that of GA20, [3H]Gibberellin A1, injected into the basal part of the epicotyl, was transported and metabolized mainly to [3H]GA8 in the apical 20 mm of the epicotyl. The conversion of [3H]GA1 to [3H]GA8 was dramatically reduced by both end-of-day FR treatments and LAB 198 999 applications. In addition, both treatments enhanced epicotyl elongation. It is proposed that the regulation of cowpea epicotyl growth by phytocrome is mediated, at least partially, by modifying GA1 degradation.

Notizen: The diversity, growth and symbiotic behaviour of symbiotically efficient alfalfa-nodulating rhizobia isolated from acid soils of Argentina and Uruguay were analysed. Partial sequencing of the 16S rDNA indicated that these isolates belong to Sinorhizobium meliloti species. IS-fingerprinting analysis revealed a high diversity among the isolates but some of them appear related to inoculant strains currently used in the region. The S. meliloti isolates showed a decreased growth rate with increasing acidity. They were, however, able to nodulate alfalfa at pH 5.6, but showed a delayed nodulation and decreased nodule number typical of S. meliloti strains. The impaired nodulation of S. meliloti at pH 5.6 did not result in a reduction of alfalfa dry matter production or nitrogen content. However, significant differences were observed for the relative symbiotic effectiveness of the strains analysed. LPU63 (Argentina) was the most effective among the isolates and exhibited a high nodulation competitiveness at both neutral and acidic pH. These results suggest that the isolate LPU63 may be a potential efficient inoculant for alfalfa in acid soils.

Notizen: Abstract Molecular methods allow an extremely fine strain typing that can be used to establish the population structure of bacterial species. This methodology has been used to characterize a collection of 74 uropathogenic Escherichia coli obtained from three hospitals located in geographically distant towns in Spain, some representatives of the ECOR collection and other reference strains. Genomic DNA was analyzed by RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) that can characterize a bacterial strain to the level of defining individual clones. The 16S rDNA-23S rDNA spacers were amplified by PCR and submitted to restriction analysis. Finally, the presence or absence of G adhesins in Escherichia coli as well as the type of adhesin (three types are known) have been shown by PCR amplification followed by digestion with restriction enzymes. As expected a wide diversity was shown by RAPD and identical patterns were only found in the case of strains isolated from the same individual, an obvious case of relapse. Analysis of the spacers' restriction patterns showed the presence of two markedly differentiated clusters that we have named α and ß. Both RAPD and spacer restriction patterns originated similar clusters of strains showing a consistency in the evolution of the global genome with the sequence variation of the ribosomal spacers. Furthermore, most of the strains having G-adhesin, with only a few exceptions, corresponded to the α rRNA spacer group. The two spacer types detected were also consistent with some phenotypic markers such as sucrose and raffinose utilization. The α and β clusters could be intraspecific groups produced by partial sexual isolation or other barriers that are originating a divergent evolution.

Notizen: Abstract The Santiago Schists are located in the Basal Unit of the Ordenes Complex, one of the allochthonous complexes outcropping in the inner part of the Hercynian Belt in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. Their tectonothermal evolution is characterized by the development of an eo-Hercynian metamorphic episode (c. 374 Ma) of high-P, low- to intermediate-T. The mineral assemblage of the high-P episode is preserved as a very thin Si= S1 foliation included in albite porphyroblasts, being composed of: albite + garnet-I + white mica-1 + chlorite-1 + epidote + quartz + rutile ± ilmenite. The equilibrium conditions for this mineral assemblage have been estimated by means of different thermobarometers at 495 ± 10 °C and 14.7 ± 0.7 kbar (probably minimum pressure). The later evolution (syn-D2) of the schists defines a decompressive and slightly prograde P-T path which reached its thermal peak at c. 525 ± 10 °C and 7 kbar. Decompression of the unit occurred contemporaneously with an inversion of the metamorphic gradient, so that the zones of garnet-II, biotite (with an upper subzone with chloritoid) and staurolite developed from bottom to top of the formation. The estimated P-T path for the Santiago Schists suggests that the Basal Unit, probably a fragment of the Gondwana continental margin, was uplifted immediately after its subduction at the beginning of the Hercynian Orogeny. It also suggests that the greater part of the unroofing history of the unit took place in a context of ductile extension, probably related to the continued subduction of the Gondwana continental margin and the contemporaneous development of compensatory extension above it. The inverted metamorphic gradient seems related to conductive heat transferred from a zone of the mantle wedge above the subducted continental margin, when it came into contact with the upper parts of the schists along a detachment, probably of extensional character. The general metamorphic evolution of the Santiago Schists, with the development of high-P assemblages with garnet prior to decompressive and prograde parageneses with biotite, is unusual in the context of the European Hercynian Belt, and shows a close similarity to the tectonothermal evolution of several high-P, low- to intermediate-T circum-Pacific belts.
