Notes: Abstract A new electrolytic solution based on a mixed solvent of ethylene carbonate (EC) with sulfolane (SL) or γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL) has been examined as an electric double layer capacitor. Fundamental properties, such as electrolytic conductivity, viscosity, and thermal stability, were measured for solutions containing quaternary alkylammonium salts as the supporting electrolyte. Maximum conductivities were obtained for the solutions with mixed solvent of 20–40 mol % EC in the EC+γ-BL system: 1.2–1.3×10−2S cm−1 for EC+γ-BL dissolving 0.5 M Et4 NBF4 (Et=C2H5). The electrochemical and the thermal stabilities of the solution were dependent on the electrolytic salt as well as the solvent composition. A stable discharge capacitance and a high coulombic efficiency were obtained in a model capacitor using carbon fibre electrodes and the organic electrolyte of EC+γ-BL/Et4NBF4 (or EC+γ-BL/Et4NPF6).

Notes: Abstract. The linear stability of an axisymmetric rotating two-fluid column in zero gravity is investigated. The inner core fluid of radius a and density $\rho_1$ is surrounded by fluid of density $\rho_2$ itself bounded by an outer impermeable cylinder of radius b. The surface tension coefficient at the immiscible interface is $\gamma$ . The parameters governing instability are the density ratio $\lambda = \rho _1/ \rho _2$ , the radius ratio $\kappa = b/a$ and the generalized Hocking parameter $L_i = \gamma / \rho _i\Omega^2 a^3$ . While the necessary and sufficient condition for stability $L_2 \le (1 - \lambda )$ is known, the preferred modes and wavenumbers at onset of instability have not been determined over the space of dimensionless parameters. Analytically and numerically determined maximum growth rates and corresponding preferred instability wavelengths for a rotating liquid column show that axisymmetric disturbances are most unstable for $L_1 〉 0.1053$ while planar disturbances determine instability when $L_1 〈 0.1053$ . The rotating two-fluid system bounded by an outer cylinder with statically stable density ratios $0 \le \lambda \le 1$ is unstable only to axisymmetric disturbances. Maximum growth rates and preferred wavelengths are computed as a function of $\lambda$ and $L_2$ at radius ratios $\kappa = 1.2$ and $\kappa = 5.0$ , respectively corresponding to relatively large and relatively small fluid cores. Complete results for the hollow-core vortex $(\lambda = 0)$ and a stationary two-fluid system $(L_2 \to \infty)$ are also presented.

Notes: Summary Biosynthesis of biopterin in mice and rats was studied. After vascular injection of14C-GTP (U) in mice and rats, radioactive biopterin was isolated from the urine. The specific radioactivity of 6-carboxypterin obtained by oxidation of biopterin was proved to be 7/9 that of biopterin. The result definitely shows that biopterin is biosynthesized from GTP in mice and rats, and the sidechain of biopterin is derived directly from the ribose moiety of GTP.

Notes: Abstract. Organic molecules adhered to the point of a micropipette were transferred onto the surface of a polymer film by pulsed laser light guided through a quartz optical fiber which was inserted into the micropipette. Controlled by a high-resolution piezoelectric driver designed for scanning probe microscopy, the distance between the micropipette point and the polymer surface was kept to a few tens of nm. After laser irradiation, the deposited molecules on the polymer surface were examined with optical transmission, fluorescence, atomic force, and scanning near-field optical microscopy. It was demonstrated that various kinds of organic molecules can be implanted into sub-micrometer regions at the surfaces of polymer films without their decomposition. The hypothetical mechanism of the molecular transfer is discussed in relation to the morphology of crystalline molecules adhered at the micropipette apertures.

Notes: Abstract. Using laser induced molecular implantation techniques (LIMIT) in thin polymer films highly space selective patterning of photochromic molecules has been created of 800 nm dimensions. In this way diffraction gratings have been fabricated which operate as photo-switching devices. These transient gratings are permanent molecular implants in a polymer films that can be UV-irradiation activated or thermally deactivated. No further grating writing is required for this transient switching effect once the permanent implantation has been made.

Notes: Abstract. The ratio of baseline level/maximum level of serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) is high in PTH-deficient hypoparathyroidism and it decreases after vitamin D3 treatment. There is a reversed sigmoidal relationship between the ratio and baseline serum Ca level. In this study, we further investigated the value of this ratio as a parameter of Ca-dependent changes of serum PTH in hyperparathyroid subjects. As in PTH-deficient hypoparathyroidism, the ratio in pseudohypoparathyroidism was high before vitamin D3 treatment and it decreased after 1,25(OH)2D3 treatment. The increased ratio may reflect the stimulated baseline PTH secretion from parathyroid cells perceiving the decrease in baseline extracellular Ca level. The points plotting the ratio against baseline serum Ca level were on the regression curve deduced from the data in PTH-deficient hypoparathyroidism. This result indicates that the relationship between the ratio and the baseline extracellular Ca level is unrelated to the variation in maximum secretion. The sigmoidal changes of serum PTH in patients with parathyroid adenoma were classified as follows. The first was with the upward and rightward curve shift, the second was only with the rightward curve shift, and the third was with the rightward curve shift, the increased minimum serum PTH, and the increased baseline/maximum ratio of serum PTH. These findings suggest that the decreased suppressibility of PTH secretion and the stimulated baseline secretion may develop without the increase in maximum secretion in some cases with parathyroid adenoma. In conclusion, the ratio of baseline level/maximum level of serum PTH may unfold a new aspect of secretion abnormality of parathyroid glands in several forms of parathyroid disorders.

Notes: Abnormal PTH secretion and cell growth in hyperparathyroid tissues are accompanied with reduced expression of Ca2+-sensing receptor (CaR) which plays a key role in Ca-regulated PTH release. In this study, we examined the receptor expression in parathyroid adenomas using specific anti-CaR antibody and investigated relationship between CaR expression in adenomatous tissues and parameters of Ca-dependent change of serum PTH. The results show a considerable variation in the number of CaR positive cells among the adenomatous tissues. Expression of the receptor protein was not related to set-point error but was more reduced in the patients with more elevated minimum or baseline levels of serum PTH. CaR expression was severely reduced in the patients with highly elevated maximum serum PTH, while the receptor expression was also decreased in some patients with normal maximum serum PTH. Baseline level / maximum level ratio of serum PTH was increased in these patients. In conclusion, reduced CaR expression is related to abnormality in three parameters of PTH secretion (minimum serum PTH, maximum serum PTH, and baseline level / maximum level ratio of serum PTH) and may contribute to hypersecretion from parathyroid adenomas.
