Description: 〈p〉The Hayabusa2 spacecraft arrived at the near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid 162173 Ryugu in 2018. We present Hayabusa2 observations of Ryugu’s shape, mass, and geomorphology. Ryugu has an oblate ‘spinning top’ shape with a prominent circular equatorial ridge. Its bulk density, 1.19 ± 0.02 g cm〈sup〉–3〈/sup〉, indicates a high porosity (〉50%) interior. Large surface boulders suggest a rubble-pile structure. Surface slope analysis shows Ryugu’s shape may have been produced if it once spun at twice the current rate. Coupled with the observed global material homogeneity, this suggests that Ryugu was reshaped by centrifugally induced deformation during a period of rapid rotation. From these remote-sensing investigations, we identify a suitable sample collection site on the equatorial ridge.〈/p〉

Description: Nociceptive neuronal circuits are formed during embryonic and postnatal times when painful stimuli are normally absent or limited. Today, medical procedures for neonates with health risks can involve tissue injury and pain for which the long-term effects are unknown. To investigate the impact of neonatal tissue injury and pain on development of nociceptive neuronal circuitry, we used an animal model of persistent hind paw peripheral inflammation. We found that, as adults, these animals exhibited spinal neuronal circuits with increased input and segmental changes in nociceptive primary afferent axons and altered responses to sensory stimulation.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ruda, M A -- Ling, Q D -- Hohmann, A G -- Peng, Y B -- Tachibana, T -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2000 Jul 28;289(5479):628-31.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Cellular Neuroscience Section, Pain and Neurosensory Mechanisms Branch, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD 20892, USA. maruda@dir.nidcr.nih.gov〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10915627" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Mouse CD4+CD8+ double-positive (DP) thymocytes differentiate into CD4+ helper-lineage cells upon expression of the transcription factor Th-POK but commit to the CD8+ cytotoxic lineage in its absence. We report the redirected differentiation of class I-restricted thymocytes into CD4+CD8- helper-like T cells upon loss of Runx transcription factor complexes. A Runx-binding sequence within the Th-POK locus acts as a transcriptional silencer that is essential for Th-POK repression and for development of CD8+ T cells. Thus, Th-POK expression and genetic programming for T helper cell development are actively inhibited by Runx-dependent silencer activity, allowing for cytotoxic T cell differentiation. Identification of the transcription factors network in CD4 and CD8 lineage choice provides insight into how distinct T cell subsets are developed for regulating the adaptive immune system.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Setoguchi, Ruka -- Tachibana, Masashi -- Naoe, Yoshinori -- Muroi, Sawako -- Akiyama, Kaori -- Tezuka, Chieko -- Okuda, Tsukasa -- Taniuchi, Ichiro -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2008 Feb 8;319(5864):822-5. doi: 10.1126/science.1151844.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Laboratory for Transcriptional Regulation, RIKEN Research Center for Allergy and Immunology, 1-7-22 Suehiro-cho, Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama 230-0045, Japan.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18258917" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Developmental gene expression is defined through cross-talk between the function of transcription factors and epigenetic status, including histone modification. Although several transcription factors play crucial roles in mammalian sex determination, how epigenetic regulation contributes to this process remains unknown. We observed male-to-female sex reversal in mice lacking the H3K9 demethylase Jmjd1a and found that Jmjd1a regulates expression of the mammalian Y chromosome sex-determining gene Sry. Jmjd1a directly and positively controls Sry expression by regulating H3K9me2 marks. These studies reveal a pivotal role of histone demethylation in mammalian sex determination.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kuroki, Shunsuke -- Matoba, Shogo -- Akiyoshi, Mika -- Matsumura, Yasuko -- Miyachi, Hitoshi -- Mise, Nathan -- Abe, Kuniya -- Ogura, Atsuo -- Wilhelm, Dagmar -- Koopman, Peter -- Nozaki, Masami -- Kanai, Yoshiakira -- Shinkai, Yoichi -- Tachibana, Makoto -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Sep 6;341(6150):1106-9. doi: 10.1126/science.1239864.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Experimental Research Center for Infectious Diseases, Institute for Virus Research, Kyoto University, 53 Shogoin, Kawara-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, Japan.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24009392" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The roots of plants normally carry small hairs arranged in a regular pattern. Transfer DNA-tagged lines of Arabidopsis thaliana included a mutant with few, randomly distributed root hairs. The mutated gene CAPRICE (CPC) encoded a protein with a Myb-like DNA binding domain typical of transcription factors involved in animal and plant development. Analysis in combination with other root hair mutations showed that CPC may work together with the TTG gene and upstream of the GL2 gene. Transgenic plants overexpressing CPC had more root hairs and fewer trichomes than normal. Thus, the CPC gene determines the fate of epidermal cell differentiation in Arabidopsis.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Wada, T -- Tachibana, T -- Shimura, Y -- Okada, K -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1997 Aug 22;277(5329):1113-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Division I of Gene Expression and Regulation, National Institute for Basic Biology, Okazaki, 444, Japan.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9262483" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Thin-film electronics intimately laminated onto the skin imperceptibly equip the human body with electronic components for health-monitoring and information technologies. When electronic devices are worn, the mechanical flexibility and/or stretchability of thin-film devices helps to minimize the stress and discomfort associated with wear because of their conformability and softness. For industrial applications, it is important to fabricate wearable devices using processing methods that maximize throughput and minimize cost. We demonstrate ultraflexible and conformable three-color, highly efficient polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) and organic photodetectors (OPDs) to realize optoelectronic skins (oe-skins) that introduce multiple electronic functionalities such as sensing and displays on the surface of human skin. The total thickness of the devices, including the substrate and encapsulation layer, is only 3 μm, which is one order of magnitude thinner than the epidermal layer of human skin. By integrating green and red PLEDs with OPDs, we fabricate an ultraflexible reflective pulse oximeter. The device unobtrusively measures the oxygen concentration of blood when laminated on a finger. On-skin seven-segment digital displays and color indicators can visualize data directly on the body.

Description: Interstellar ice is believed to be a cradle of complex organic compounds, commonly found within icy comets and interstellar clouds, in association with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and subsequent warming. We found that UV-irradiated amorphous ices composed of H 2 O, CH 3 OH, and NH 3 and of pure H 2 O behave like liquids over the temperature ranges of 65 to 150 kelvin and 50 to 140 kelvin, respectively. This low-viscosity liquid-like ice may enhance the formation of organic compounds including prebiotic molecules and the accretion of icy dust to form icy planetesimals under certain interstellar conditions.

Description: A substance or substances capable of increasing the firing rate of primary auditory fibers is detectable in the perilymph of frogs and guinea pigs subjected to sound stimulation. The increase in firing rate occurs in single units of the frog auditory nerve after perilymph obtained from frogs or guinea pigs during sound stimulation is infused into the frog perilymphatic sac. Perilymph collected from animals maintained in silence failed to cause an increase in firing rate of primary auditory fibers of the frog.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sewell, W F -- Norris, C H -- Tachibana, M -- Guth, P S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Nov 24;202(4370):910-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30998" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Along with homosexual men, Haitians, and intravenous drug abusers, hemophiliacs are at high risk of contracting acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). An earlier study revealed that 36 percent of a group of the AIDS patients had antibodies to cell membrane antigens associated with the human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV-MA), whereas only 1.2 percent of matched asymptomatic homosexual controls had these antibodies. In the present experiments, serum samples from 172 asymptomatic hemophiliacs were examined for the presence of antibodies to HTLV-MA. Such antibodies were detected in 5 to 19 percent of the hemophiliacs examined from four geographical locations, but in only 1 percent or less of laboratory workers, normal blood donors, donors on hemodialysis, or donors with chronic active hepatitis.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Essex, M -- McLane, M F -- Lee, T H -- Tachibana, N -- Mullins, J I -- Kreiss, J -- Kasper, C K -- Poon, M C -- Landay, A -- Stein, S F -- Francis, D P -- Cabradilla, C -- Lawrence, D N -- Evatt, B L -- 2-T32-CA09031/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA 18216/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Sep 9;221(4615):1061-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6603659" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
