Beschreibung: Protein-chromophore interactions are a central component of a wide variety of critical biological processes such as color vision and photosynthesis. To understand the fundamental elements that contribute to spectral tuning of a chromophore inside the protein cavity, we redesigned human cellular retinol binding protein II (hCRBPII) to fully encapsulate all-trans-retinal and form a covalent bond as a protonated Schiff base. This system, using rational mutagenesis designed to alter the electrostatic environment within the binding pocket of the host protein, enabled regulation of the absorption maximum of the pigment in the range of 425 to 644 nanometers. With only nine point mutations, the hCRBPII mutants induced a systematic shift in the absorption profile of all-trans-retinal of more than 200 nanometers across the visible spectrum.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4046837/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4046837/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Wang, Wenjing -- Nossoni, Zahra -- Berbasova, Tetyana -- Watson, Camille T -- Yapici, Ipek -- Lee, Kin Sing Stephen -- Vasileiou, Chrysoula -- Geiger, James H -- Borhan, Babak -- R01 GM067311/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- R01-GM54082/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Dec 7;338(6112):1340-3. doi: 10.1126/science.1226135.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Chemistry, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23224553" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) drives large changes in global climate patterns from year to year, yet its sensitivity to continued anthropogenic greenhouse forcing is uncertain. We analyzed fossil coral reconstructions of ENSO spanning the past 7000 years from the Northern Line Islands, located in the center of action for ENSO. The corals document highly variable ENSO activity, with no evidence for a systematic trend in ENSO variance, which is contrary to some models that exhibit a response to insolation forcing over this same period. Twentieth-century ENSO variance is significantly higher than average fossil coral ENSO variance but is not unprecedented. Our results suggest that forced changes in ENSO, whether natural or anthropogenic, may be difficult to detect against a background of large internal variability.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Cobb, Kim M -- Westphal, Niko -- Sayani, Hussein R -- Watson, Jordan T -- Di Lorenzo, Emanuele -- Cheng, H -- Edwards, R L -- Charles, Christopher D -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Jan 4;339(6115):67-70. doi: 10.1126/science.1228246.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA 30332, USA. kcobb@eas.gatech.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23288537" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: The rate coefficients for the reaction of hydroxyl (OH) radicals with methyl chloroform (CH(3)CCI(3)) were measured between 243 and 379 kelvin with the pulsed photolysis-laserinduced fluorescence method. The measured rate coefficients at 298 and 277 kelvin were approximately 20 and approximately 15%, respectively, lower than earlier values. These results will increase the tropospheric OH concentrations derived from the CH(3)CCI(3) budget analysis by approximately 15%. The predicted atmospheric lifetimes of species whose main loss process is the reaction with OH in the troposphere will be lowered by 15% with consequent changes in their budgets, global warming potentials, and ozone depletion potentials.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Talukdar, R K -- Mellouki, A -- Schmoltner, A M -- Watson, T -- Montzka, S -- Ravishankara, A R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 Jul 10;257(5067):227-30.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17794755" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
