    Description: The absorption spectrum of thin film CsPbCl 3 in the 2–6 eV range is studied at temperatures of 90–500 K. Sudden changes show up in the temperature dependences of the parameters of the long-wavelength exciton band (spectral position E m ( T ), half width Γ( T ), and oscillator strength f ( T )) at the first order phase transitions at 310 and 320. No phase transitions in E m ( T ), Γ( T ), and f ( T ) are detected at low temperatures. The exciton excitations in CsPbCl 3 are found to have a three-dimensional character.

    Notes: The Ca(4p2 1D2) state is prepared in a two-step excitation with linearly polarized lasers. Two different angular wave functions are selected, Y2,0 or (Y2,−1−Y2,1)/, by using parallel or perpendicular laser polarizations, respectively. Subsequent collision with a rare gas atom (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, or Xe) populates the near-resonant Ca(3d4p 1F3) state. The dependence of the collisional energy transfer process is measured as a function of the alignment of the initial 1D2 state wave function with respect to the average relative velocity vector. The laser-selected Y2,0 and (Y2,−1−Y2,1)/ angular wave functions display dramatically different alignment dependences, which are understood by an analysis of the rotation properties of these wave functions. The relative contributions to the cross section of the individual 1D2 sublevels, ML=0, ±1, and ±2, are extracted, and these vary considerably depending on the rare gas. For He, the ML=±2 sublevel (asymptotic Δ molecular state) contributes the most to the total cross section, while for all the other rare gases, the ML=0, ±1 sublevels (asymptotic Σ and Π molecular states, respectively) are more important. The contribution of the ML=0 sublevel increases smoothly with increasing mass of the rare gas collision partner, becoming the largest contributor for Xe.

    Notes: The design of "KRION-C'' with an energy of up to 80 keV and preliminary results on the ionization of sulfur and argon ions are presented. The cryogenic electron beam ionizer "KRION-C'' was used as an ion source for the first run with sulfur relativistic nuclei at the accelerating facility of the Laboratory of High Energies (LHE) in Dubna.

    Notes: A simple system for beam positioning and spatial distribution diagnostics based on a cooled charge coupled device (CCD) camera, scintillation screen, and optics has been developed. Standard methods of recording beam profiles are different for low and high intensity beams, which complicates readout techniques. The main advantage of our system is its adaptability for intensity range 103–1012 particles/cm2/pulse. The system was tested at the Dubna synchrophasotron complex. Protons and nuclei beam profile and position monitoring in mentioned intensity range and energy range of 10 MeV to 10 GeV was provided. A CCD camera is used in wavelengths interval 400–1100 nm. The hardware, software, and cryogenics of this system are described. Effects of fixed pattern noise and dependence of nonuniformity of response on wavelength are shown and some results of beam diagnostic are presented.

    Description: Magnetoelectric (ME) composites that simultaneously exhibit ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism have recently gained significant attention as evident by the increasing number of publications. These research activities are direct results of the fact that multiferroic magnetoelectrics offer significant technological promise for multiple devices. Appropriate choice of phases with co-firing capability, magnetostriction and piezoelectric coefficient, such as Ni-PZT and NZFO-PZT, has resulted in fabrication of prototype components that promise transition. In this manuscript, we report the properties of Ni-PZT and NZFO-PZT composites in terms of ME voltage coefficients as a function of frequency and magnetic DC bias. In order to overcome the problem of toxicity of lead, we have conducted experiments with Pb-free piezoelectric compositions. Results are presented on the magnetoelectric performance of Ni-NKN, Ni-NBTBT and NZFO-NKN, NZFO-NBTBT systems illustrating their importance as an environmentally friendly alternative.

    Description: Cellulose Nanocrysals (CNC) is a renewable biodegradable biopolymer with outstanding mechanical properties made from highly abundant natural source, and therefore is very attractive as reinforcing additive to replace petroleum-based plastics in biocomposite materials, foams, and gels. Large-scale applications of CNC are currently limited due to its low solubility in non-polar organic solvents used in existing polymerization technologies. The solvation properties of CNC can be improved by chemical modification of its surface. Development of effective surface modifications has been rather slow because extensive chemical modifications destabilize the hydrogen bonding network of cellulose and deteriorate the mechanical properties of CNC.     Description: The identification of similarities in the material requirements for applications of interest and those of living organisms provides opportunities to use renewable natural resources to develop better materials and design better devices. In our work, we harness this strategy to build high-capacity silicon (Si) nanopowder-based lithium (Li)-ion batteries with improved performance characteristics. Si offers more than one order of magnitude higher capacity than graphite, but it exhibits dramatic volume changes during electrochemical alloying and de-alloying with Li, which typically leads to rapid anode degradation.
