Description: This work analyses the changes in entrepreneurship of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) after privatization, including sales of firms and deregulation. A sample of Spanish firms privatized between 1985 and 2000 shows that these companies have experienced a significant increase in entrepreneurship. After privatization their level of product, process and organizational innovation is higher; they also develop new businesses at domestic level, reinforce their international activity and embark on strategic renewal processes. In addition, we have found that these changes become more drastic when competition is high.

Description: This paper explores the long-run effects of inflation on the dynamics of private sector bank credit and economic growth in Mexico over the period 1969 - 2011. With an ARDL-type model, the statistical results suggest that the availability of private sector bank credit in the economy exerts a positive impact on real GDP. In addition, inflation rates have contributed negatively to the increase in private credit, liquid liabilities, and financial development. A key outcome is that one percent increase in inflation is associated with a 0.07 % fall in long-run real rate of output through its effect on bank credit to the private sector. Another crucial finding is that policies of financial liberalization have helped stimulate economic growth. Reinforcing the literature on finance and growth, this study reaffirms that inflation rates are detrimental to long-run financial development and economic growth.

Description: From the irruption of Internet, companies have undertaken a career for obtaining a position in the electronic business. However, this investment is being accomplishing without having a clear feedback of the profitability that the use of these technologies reports. This work analyzes in which measured the behavior of the company in Internet is associated to the structural capital. In doing so, we have applied hierarchic regression on a sample of 164 companies of the Telecommunications industry. Our results show that the mere presence in Internet does not provide necessarily a value to the company, in contraposition to companies that actually make transactions in Internet, furthermore, it is observed that the size is associated positively to the structural capital.

Description: The aim of this work is to analyze the link between variables concerning public financial information and intangibles investment for technological firms. The investigation focuses on firms in Nasdaq-100 index during the 1999-2004 period. Two groups have been obtained by means of cluster analysis according its degree of investment in the so-called intangible factor. The effect of profit or losses, amortization, total assets and product expenses over intangible investment has been analyzed by means of discriminant analysis.

Description: This paper analyses the relationship between firm performance and women on boards and top management positions in a sample of large Spanish firms in the period 2000-2004. The results of the study indicate that the percentage of women on boards and top management teams is much lower in industrial and technological sectors than in services. The participation of women is greater in industries that have greater percentages of women in the workforce. The relationship between women participation on boards and firm performance depend on the measure of female representation and the measure of firm performance. The variation of firm performance in the period 2000-2004 does not explain the variation of female representation on boards and top management during that period.

Description: The present work represents an analysis of the different strengths and weaknesses that can be considered as key factors in making easier or more difficult the internationalisation process of the family firm. In one hand, based to the resources and capabilities theory, we show how family businesses can find enough reasons for its internationalisation if they consider that their competitive advantage could be based on some of them, specially those ones linked to intangible resources. On the other hand, we also explain others factors that can limit or facilitate the internationalisation process whose origin is the overlap of family and firm systems.

Description: In the present work, we analyse the effects of family communication, publicly versus privately consumption products and degree of consumer expertise on the nature and effects of family influences. Thus, causal relationships between determinants and family influences are studied via multivariate regression analyses. Main results show that participation of the young adult in family decision making fosters family influences both on the informational and normative nature and also on its effects on skills, preferences and attitudes. Moreover, family influences on young adult's consumption are more likely developed in private consumption goods than in public ones.

Description: Background: Opioid addiction is a worldwide problem. Agonist opioid treatment (AOT) is the most widespread and frequent pharmacotherapeutic approach. Methadone has been the most widely used AOT, but buprenorphine, a partial kappa-opiod agonist and a my-opiod antagonist, is fast gaining acceptance. The objective was to assess the budgetary impact in Spain of the introduction of buprenorphine-naloxone (B/N) combination. Methods: A budgetary impact model was developed to estimate healthcare costs of the addition of B/N combination to the therapeutic arsenal for treating opioid dependent patients, during a 3-year period under the National Health System perspective. Inputs for the model were obtained from the specialized scientific literature. Detailed information concerning resource consumption (drug cost, logistics, dispensing, medical, psychiatry and pharmacy supervision, counselling and laboratory test) was obtained from a local expert panel. Costs are expressed in euros (€, 2010). Results: The number of patients estimated to be prescribed B/N combination was 2,334; 2,993 and 3,589 in the first, second and third year respectively. Total budget is €85,766,129; €79,855,471 and €79,137,502 in the first, second and third year for the scenario without B/N combination. With B/N combination the total budget would be €86,589,210; €80,398,259 and €79,708,964 in the first, second and third year of the analyses. Incremental cost/ patient comparing the addition of the B/N combination to the scenario only with methadone is €10.58; €6.98 and €7.34 in the first, second and third year respectively. Conclusion: Addition of B/N combination would imply a maximum incremental yearly cost of €10.58 per patient compared to scenario only with methadone and would provide additional benefits.
