Notes: Summary Different steps of analytical procedures, i.e. preconcentration, extraction and detection, were performed with isolated drops hanging at loops, in order to reduce changes in the analyte content, which may result from interactions between the sample and the surfaces of container walls. Detection of analytes in the drops were based on either photometry with a fiber optic or conductometry with miniaturized conductometric cells and determinations were carried out by volumetry or using calibration curves. The recovery of sample pretreatment within the drop was determined by using fluorescein as a less volatile compound. The experiments serve as simulations for later studies with acoustically levitated drops placed in the nodal points of standing ultrasonic waves.

Notes: Abstract Pb-contaminated soil samples were investigated using XAFS spectroscopy and SEM/EDX as tools for the analysis of chemical binding forms. The soils originated from the vicinity of a battery factory in Hannover (Germany) and had Pb-contents between 50 g/kg and 140 g/kg. PbCO3, PbSO4, PbO and basic PbCO3 could be identified as the main constituents in the samples by XAFS spectroscopy (EXAFS as well as XANES). This result is consistent with the results of the SEM/EDX investigations on the same soil samples, which showed, that almost all of the lead contained in the soils appears in the form of discrete particles of lead compounds. The EDX analysis of these particles consistently shows the presence of Pb, C, O and S.

Notes: Abstract First experiences with the technique of acoustical levitation of droplets in the field of analytical and atmospheric chemistry are reported. Acoustical levitation enables the contactless handling of solid and liquid microsamples. This avoids adsorption of analyte at and desorption of contaminants from container walls especially for liquid samples. Common experiments of sample preparation procedures were conducted in levitated drops like liquid/liquid extractions, solvent exchange, and analyte enrichment by evaporation of the solvent. A first approach was made to use acoustical levitation for the simulation of atmospheric chemistry situations.
