    Notizen: Abstract The sensilla basiconica or grooved pegs of mosquitoes consist of two morphologically and functionally distinct classes. Short grooved pegs house sensory cells that are excited by lactic acid whereas lactic acid-excited cells are absent in long grooved pegs. This correlation was found in four species of mosquito examined:Aedes aegypti, Aedes atropalpus, Aedes epactius, andCulex pipiens. InAedes epactius, both short and long grooved pegs house receptors that are sensitive to butyric acid.

    Notizen: Abstract We present a preliminary report on our mass spectrometric and photoelectron spectroscopic studies of zirconium oxide molecular and cluster anions using a newly built laser vaporization/time-of-flight/magnetic bottle, negative ion photoelectron spectrometer. This work was motivated in part by evidence which suggests that zirconium dioxide catalyzes the radiolysis of interfacial water. We present our mass spectrometric observations of oxygen-rich zirconium oxide cluster anions and our photoelectron spectra of ZrO− and ZrO 2 − . From the photoelectron spectrum of ZrO−, the adiabatic electron affinity of ZrO was determined to be 1.3±0.3 eV, and from this value, the dissociation energy of ZrO− (into Zr and O−) was found to be 7.8±0.3 eV. From the photoelectron spectrum of ZrO2, the adiabatic electron affinity of ZrO2 was determined to be 1.8±0.4 eV.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper describes how the HRM function can positively influence the satisfaction of both its internal customers, such as, line employees, and external customers. Evidence is cited for how satisfaction levels in these internal and external markets often are correlated in service organizations. The management practices apparently associated with this correlation are described, concentrating on HRM's role in creating satisfied employees who are motivated and able service providers. The importance of customizing HRM practices to fit a specific market segment is emphasized.

    Notizen: Conclusion Geminus account of lunar motion in chapter 18 of hisIntroductio astronomiae is, in our view, an important contribution to Greco-Latin astronomy because, in attempting to reconstruct arithmetically (the parameters of) the Moon's motion in longitude, he undermines the task astronomers had hitherto set for themselves. This undermining of a commonly acknowledged view of the purpose of astronomy is articulated in a whole new set of questions concerning the nature and place of both observation and mathematical reasoning in the science of the heavens. Yet, one must not overlook the fact thatGeminus reconstruction also indicates resources for addressing these questions. Of these resources, the most powerful proved to be the idea that irregular motion could be quantified as a systematic departure from a mean motion, and the idea that observational data could be organized and structured by means of genetic arithmetical reconstructions. But, since we limit our attention to extant treatises and decline to speculate about works or parts of works that have not survived, we must say that it would takePtolemy to discern the new direction for astronomy thatGeminus opened up and to pursue it. In part, this involved straightening out the conflated conception of mean motion in chapter 18 — the μεση κίνησίςqua arithmetic mean daily displacement can only be anapparent lunar motion in longitude and not one the Moonreally makes, but the same need not be true of the μέση κίνησιςqua periodic mean daily displacement — and determining its proper relation to real and apparent planetary motion. Indeed,Ptolemy's genius lay, we think, in seeing that even though, in assimilating Babylonian astronomy, earlier and contemporary Greco-Latin writers betrayed a confused, inconsistent, and unsophisticated grasp of the proper role of arithmetic, geometry, and observation in astronomical argument [seeBowen 1994], the solution lay in a mathematical reconstruction of the observed celestial motions, in which mean motion played an essential role.

    Notizen: Abstract The variation in P uptake and use efficiency and N accumulation by Gliricidia sepium (N2-fixing tree), Senna siamea and S. spectabilis (leguminous non-N2-fixing trees) were examined in the field at Fashola (savanna zone), southwestern Nigeria, using four P rates, 0, 20, 40 and 80 kg P ha-1. Growth of G. sepium and S. spectabilis responded to P application at 24 weeks after planting (WAP) and average yield increases of 58% and 145% were observed by the application of 40 kg P ha-1 for the two species, respectively. Such a P response was not found in S. siamea at 24 WAP and for any of the species at 48 WAP. G. sepium accumulated more P (on average 162%) than S. siamea and S. spectabilis at 24 WAP and had greater root length and a higher percentage of mycorrhizal infection. However, at 48 WAP S. siamea had 2.5 times more P than G. sepium. Differences in the physiological P use efficiency (PPUE) between G. sepium and the non-N2-fixing trees were significant at the 0 P level, being higher for S. siamea (average, 0.61 g shoot mg-1 P) than for G. sepium (0.27 g shoot mg-1 P). G. sepium had a consistently lower atom % 15N than S. spectabilis, while that of S. siamea for most of the time did not differ from that of G. sepium. The reference plant affected N2 fixation extimates, with negative values and a higher variability (CV 60%) associated with S. siamea than with S. spectabilis (CV〈20%). Consequently, S. spectabilis was selected as a better reference plant for measuring N2 fixation in G. sepium. G. sepium fixed on average 35% and 54% of its N at 24 and 48 WAP, respectively. Except at the lowest P rate, percentage and amount of N fixed were not generally enhanced by P application.
