Notes: Abstract The effect of the new substituted benzimidazole proton pump inhibitor, lansoprazole, on pharmacokinetics and metabolism of theophylline has been studied in healthy adults given oral lansoprazole 30 mg once daily for 11 days. On Days 4 and 11 of 300 mg aminophylline was simultaneously administered orally and blood samples for theophylline analysis were taken over 24 h. Urine samples were collected for up to 24 h and were assayed for theophylline and its major metabolites 1,3-dimethyluric acid (1,3-DMU), 1-methyluric acid (1-MU) and 3-methylxanthine (3-MX). The pharmacokinetic parameters of theophylline were determined, and the urinary recovery of unchanged theophylline and its major metabolites were calculated. After administration of lansoprazole for 4 days, no significant alteration in the terminal elimination half-life (t 1/2β) or the mean residence time (MRT) was detected. However, there was a significant decrease of about 13% in the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and a significant increase of about 19% in the apparent clearance (CLapp). Lansoprazole treatment for 11 days caused a significant decrease of approximately 12% in t 1/2β and about 10% in the MRT of theophylline, although neither AUC nor CLapp showed a significant alteration. The excretion of 3-MX in the urine was significantly increased by about 20% after lansoprazole treatment for 4 and 11 days, although there was no significant alteration in the excretion of unchanged theophylline, 1,3-DMU or 1-MU. The results indicate that repeated administration of lansoprazole to humans induces the hepatic microsomal P-450-dependent drug oxidation system that mediates N-1-demethylation of theophylline, consequently increasing its metabolism.

Notes: The spectral dependence of the photoionization cross section of Fe doped in InP is determined by photocapacitance spectroscopy. The optical process of the carrier emission from the deep acceptor level of Fe is discussed from the results. For the crystal-field-split level of Fe2+:5E, the photoionization cross sections for the fundamental transitions of 5E→Γ1 and Γ15→5E are adequately described by the Lucovsky model. Those optical thresholds are 0.63 and 0.78 eV, respectively, at 77 K. In comparison with the deep-level transient spectroscopy measurements, the following conclusions are obtained. The energy separation between the Fe acceptor level and the conduction-band edge is constant, but that between the Fe level and the valence-band edge varies correspondingly to the temperature variation of the InP band-gap energy. The fact that there is no difference between the optical and thermal activation energies for the 5E→Γ1 transition indicates that the Fe acceptor level is not perturbed by the InP lattice vibration.

Notes: We determined spectral dependence of the photoionization cross section of the Fe acceptor in In0.49Ga0.15P by photocapacitance spectroscopy. As a result of the alloy effect we observed the nonexponential photocapacitance transient. We treated it with a model of the energetically broadened defect level. Optical thresholds for 5E and 5T2 of the crystal-field-split Fe acceptor level are 0.78 and 1.15 eV at 77 K. The small difference of 40 meV between the optical and thermal activation energies for the transition from the valence band to 5E reveals the weak coupling between the Fe acceptor level and the lattice vibration of InGaP.

Notes: We reveal the intrinsic Josephson effect in a La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) high-Tc superconductor. Nb counterelectrodes are deposited on top of mesas, which are formed on surfaces either parallel or perpendicular to the ab plane of LSCO single crystals. Nb/LSCO interfaces behave as SNS Josephson junctions. For the junctions parallel to the ab plane, we observe many branches in the current–voltage characteristics due to intrinsic Josephson effects. The voltage gaps between the branches are typically 0.1 mV, which is much smaller than the superconducting energy gap 2Δ≅11 mV expected for LSCO from Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer theory. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magneto-optical Kerr spectra of ultrathin Co films grown on Cu(001) surfaces have been measured in situ. The growth mode and the crystal structure have been investigating by reflection high-energy electron diffraction observation. A 20-A(ring)-thick fcc Co grown on Cu(001) had a lateral lattice constant of 3.59±0.01 A(ring), which was about 1.4% expanded compared with that of the bulk fcc Co. There was a remarkable difference above 4 eV in ωσyz spectra between 20- and 1000-A(ring)-thick films. ωσyz spectra for 20-A(ring)-thick Co film showed a resonance-type structure at around 5 eV. It is considered that the structure is caused by the lower energy shift of the 1→6 interband transitions due to the narrowing of the 3d bands. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We grew In1−xGaxAsyP1−y/InP quantum wells (QWs) by low-pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The In1−xGaxAsyP1−y layer was closely lattice matched to InP with a composition of y=0.9 (x=0.47y). We investigated structural imperfections such as composition fluctuations, interface roughness, and nonperiodicity analyzing the low-temperature photoluminescence linewidth. We found that the InGaAsP layer composition fluctuated, causing about 5 meV inhomogeneity in the exciton energy level in QWs wider than about 3 nm. Since we obtained very smooth interfaces with less than one monolayer of fluctuation and excellent periodicity by lowering growth temperature to 570 °C, the inhomogeneity of the exciton energy level could be held at 6 meV for 20-period 10-nm multiple QWs. As a result, despite composition fluctuations, a clear room-temperature exciton optical absorption peak was observed at 1.5 μm for the first time to our knowledge.

Notes: A total of 31 antibody-secreting hybridoma cells against the yellowtail ascites virus (YAV) were established. These monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) reacted with the cytoplasm of YAV-infected CHSE-214 cells, but not with uninfected CHSE-214 cells in an immunofluorescence test. Using these MAbs, two classes of polypeptides (VP2 and VP3) were characterized by immunoprecipitation followed by SDS-PAGE, although one MAb did not react with either polypeptide. Fifteen out of the 17 MAbs that were reactive with VP2 polypeptides neutralized virus infectivity, but all 13 MAbs that were reactive with VP3 did not neutralize infectivity. In the immunofluorescence test, 29 out of the 31 MAbs obtained showed the same reaction pattern to 12 YAV isolates from yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, goldstriped amberjack, Seriola aureovittata, and threeline grunt, Parapristipoma trilineatum, from different geographical regions. The remaining two MAbs showed slightly different reaction patterns to the YAV isolates. The reaction patterns of the MAbs to the VR-299, Sp and Ab strains of IPNV were also investigated. Fourteen MAbs reacted to all three IPNV strains. The other 17 MAbs showed a negative reaction with at least one strain.

Notes: We present experimental results on elementary phase-mode Josephson circuits whose combinations enable us to construct a total data processing system which is expected to be superior to the ordinary voltage-mode Josephson computer in several respects. In the phase-mode system a device depends for its operation on the existence of many stable states differing from one another by integer multiples of 2π in the phase plane. The total system is considered to be a prototype of quantum computer systems where physical quantum states are employed as logic states of information processing. By using the fabricated elementary circuits composed of SQUIDs and two types of branching points we have experimentally confirmed and, fan-out, fan-in operations, etc. We have also proposed an inhibit circuit, and presented the experimental results on the inhibit circuit.

Notes: Using c-axis-oriented oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7−δ film deposited across a low-angle step on a SrTiO3 substrate, we successfully demonstrated intrinsic Josephson effects. In addition to several voltage jumps of large amplitudes (a few millivolts) and remarkable hysteresis on the dc current–voltage curves, we observed upturns on the current–voltage curves under microwave irradiation which appeared at increasingly high voltages with increasing microwave power. We proposed to explain this observation in terms of high-order microwave-induced Shapiro steps. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Films of (Yb,Tb,Bi)3Fe5O12 show excellent characteristics of the Faraday rotator at the wavelength of 1.3 μm; the rotation is −1800 deg/cm, insertion loss 0.3 dB, isolation 38 dB, and the temperature dependence of the Faraday rotation is 0.060 deg/K at room temperature. The films are grown epitaxially on the (Gd,Ca)3(Ga,Mg,Zr)5O12 substrates, from the melt in the flux PbO/B2O3/Bi2O3. The melt contains rare-earth ions (R=Y,Gd,Er,Dy,Tm,Yb,Lu) as c-site components of rare-earth iron garnets, and Fe and Ga+Al as a- and d-site components. The obtained film thickness is in the range 300–400 μm without appreciable defects on the substrate, with a 2-in. diameter. This technology will lead to the efficient production of the optical isolator used in optical systems.
