    Notizen: The efficiency of a urea-acid system as an extraction medium for riboflavin from a wide variety of food products was evaluated. Riboflavin present in hamburger and pork was extracted with urea and 1N HCI acid solution. Fruits and all ofher food samples selected for this study, required urea in the presence of 0.lN H2SO4 and 0.2N H2SO4 acid solutions respectively for the extraction of riboflavin. The extracts were diluted to a known volume, filtered and analyzed. The blank readings of the samples were determined by reducing riboflavin to a nonfluorescent compound with sodium hydrosulfite solution. The analytical data obtained for riboflavin was compared with results obtained by AOAC, enzymatic-hydrolysis methods and literature values. Automated results were lower for meat and dairy products but higher for fruits and vegetables in comparison with the AOAC values. In general, the suitability of urea-acid system for the extraction of riboflavin from a wide variety of food products was comparable to those of AOAC and enzymatic-hydrolysis methods of extraction.

    Notizen: The increasing use of sorbic acid and sorbates has created a need for a rapid, reliable and accurate analytical procedure for the routine analysis of these materials in food products. In this paper is described an automated version of the most popular calorimetric (thiobarbituric acid) method, originally proposed by Schmidt. The procedure uses a gas diffusion membrane in lieu of steam distillation for the separation of sorbic acid from the food samples. The separated acid is cleaved with potassium dichromate in acidic medium to yield an intermediate malon-aldehyde, which in turn, when reacted with thiobarbituric acid, produces a red dye. The absorbance of the red color, measured at 530 nm was proportional to the concentration of the sorbic acid in the sample. This automated procedure is capable of analyzing 30 samples per hour.

    Notizen: An improved semiautomated enzymatic procedure employing L-ly-sine decarboxylase for the analysis of lysine is described. Carbon dioxide formed in the reaction mixture is separated by a gas dialyzel and measured calorimetrically by the phenolphthalein method. Certain vitamins, amino acids, and metal ions, when added to lysine standard solution and analyzed by the present procedure, caused a decrease in both sensitivity and reproducibility. The procedure developed is capable of analyzing 30 samples per hour. The mean recovery of added lysine was 94.1%.

    Notizen: The topotaxy of the reaction of single crystals of periclase, MgO, and β-Ga2O3 to form the spinel MgGa2O4 was investigated by optical and X-ray diffraction techniques after reaction at 1600°C. Three different reaction couples were studied, namely the (001) face of β-Ga2O3 contacting the (001), (110) and (111) surfaces of MgO. The three-dimensional coherency of the oxygen arrangement and packing between each constituent oxide and the spinel reaction product was demonstrated. In both cases the close-packed oxygen planes in the spinel product were aligned parallel to the close-packed oxygen planes in the respective reactant. The topotaxies between the spinel product and the parent crystals were: (a) (111)sp||(013)ga1, [1{\bar 1}0]sp||[100]gai; (b) (111)sp||(111)p, [1{\bar 1}0]sp||[1{\bar 1}0]p. The data for the topotaxy of the spinel reaction product with respect to β-Ga2O3 is fully consistent with an earlier study of the precipitation of β-Ga2O3 from a spinel crystalline solution. This study verified a Wagner-type reaction mechanism where the close-packed oxygen anion structure remains essentially unchanged while the reaction proceeds by a counter diffusion of Mg2+ and Ga3+ ions through the spinel layer formed at the interface. This method of solid-state crystal growth for binary oxide systems at a temperature far below the solidus temperature (∼ 2000°C) can find application in the growth of crystals that decompose or melt ineongruently or that have an undesirable polymorph when solidified directly from the melt.

It provides a sensitive test of theoretical fits to the cross section angular distribution.
