Notes: Abstract The length, growth and survivorship of mature sporophytes of Ecklonia radiata (C.Ag.) J. Agardh were measured on two patch reefs within the lagoon of a high-latitude, coralreef atoll (Easter Group, Houtman Abrolhos; 28° to 29° S; 113°35 to 114°03′E) for 1 yr (1982–1983). The sites differed in their proximity to the perimeter reef, but had similar regimes of temperature, light, nutrient concentration and water movement. Kelp length, growth rate and survivorship differed significantly between sites, although plant density was similar (less than l m-2). At the site near the lagoon perimeter, the central lamina averaged 381 mm in length, grew at an annual mean rate of 1.28 mm d-1, and 56% of tagged individuals had died after one year. The corresponding values for the site near the centre of the lagoon were: 257 mm, 0.75 mm d-1 and 92%. Three other sites on the coastal limestone reefs near Perth (400 km to the south) were studied for various intervals over a 5 yr period (April 1979 to August 1984). The kelp from the low-latitude sites were smaller, grew more slowly, and suffered similar or greater mortality than their southern counterparts. Latitudinal comparisons were confounded by differences in kelp density between sites, but there is no evidence for density-dependent effects on the measured parameters across the range of natural densities observed. Growth rates at all sites were negatively correlated with ambient sea temperatures when these were above 20°C. There was no evidence of adaptation to the higher sea temperatures experienced at the Abrolhos, and temperature cannot be dismissed as a factor controlling the growth of the species near the northern limit of its distribution on the Western Australian coast. Other factors however must be involved in determining the latitudinal position of that limit.

Notes: The Birkhoff–Gustavson normal form (BGNF) is employed to study general double-well anharmonic oscillators with polynomial potentials of degree 4. Via an analytic continuation of the BGNF series, expressions are presented that provide classical and semiclassical results for all energies. A surprising observation of the classical period and an interesting feature of the semiclassical quantum numbers are reported. It is shown that except for a small region near the top of the potential barrier, the BGNF approach yields accurate quantum energies.

Notes: Path-space representations in terms of Feynman gauge stochastic integrals are given for the free Maxwell field in all covariant gauges interpolating between the Feynman and Landau gauges. These are applied to quantum electrodynamics and Yang–Mills theories with spatial lattice cutoffs.

Notes: The classical Birkhoff–Gustavson normal form (BGNF) has played an important role in finding approximate constants of motion, and semiclassical energies. In this paper, this role is examined in detail for the well-known anharmonic oscillator H=1/2(p2+x2+gx4). It is shown that, with appropriate restrictions, this is the only perturbation series that preserves the period of this system. This series has a nonzero radius of convergence in contrast to the zero radius of convergence of its quantum analog, the Rayleigh–Schrödinger perturbation series. In addition, the BGNF is generated to high order, and a technique is given based on Padé approximants for summing this series. The summation of this series makes possible an accurate comparison of torus quantization energies with the known quantum energies over the entire range of quantum numbers. This example also demonstrates that divergence of the BGNF series of a Hamiltonian is not sufficient to refute its global integrability.

Notes: Oxidation of silicon wafers containing lattice damage at the surface normally results in the formation of extrinsic stacking faults. Optical microscope investigation following decorative etching shows that on certain specimens the faults have a straight line appearance while on others the ends of the defect are much enlarged giving a "dog-bone'' shape. Analytical electron microscopy investigation confirmed that the dog-bone shaped faults were decorated with two types of precipitates near their edges, colonies and plate. Both resided on the (111) fault planes and extended over several thousand angstroms. Precipitate diffraction spots were not found due to the small volume fraction, but translational Moiré fringes were observed for certain matrix g vectors, thus aiding in the crystallographic analysis. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis revealed that colony precipitates were due to Ni and Cu contamination while plate precipitates were due to Ni. Crystal structures for both were determined to be NiSi2 type silicides.
