5-Nitro-uracil läßt sich durch Reduktion mit Natriumdithionit in 5-Sulfamino-uracil (VI) überführen. Diese Verbindung schließt beim Schmelzen mit Harnstoff infolge einer innermolekularen Oxydoreduktion den Imidazolring und bildet so in einem Schritt quantitativ Harnsäure. Beim Erhitzen der Sulfaminsäure mit Formamid findet die analoge Synthese von Xanthin statt. Durch Einwirkung von Salpetersäure auf Sulfamino-uracil entsteht 5-Diazo-barbitursäure.
