Description: Intertidal inhabitants are exposed to the 24-hour solar day, and the 12.4 hour rising and falling of the tides. One or both of these cycles govern intertidal organisms’ behaviour and physiology, yet little is known about the molecular clockworks of tidal rhythmicity. Here, we show that the limpet Cellana rota exhibits robust tidally rhythmic behaviour and gene expression. We assembled a de-novo transcriptome, identifying novel tidal, along with known circadian clock genes. Surprisingly, most of the putative circadian clock genes, lack a typical rhythmicity. We identified numerous tidally rhythmic genes and pathways commonly associated with the circadian clock. We show that not only is the behaviour of an intertidal organism in tune with the tides, but so too are many of its genes and pathways. These findings highlight the plasticity of biological timekeeping in nature, strengthening the growing notion that the role of ‘canonical’ circadian clock genes may be more fluid than previously thought, as exhibited in an organism which has evolved in an environment where tidal oscillations are the dominant driving force.

Notes: [Auszug] The polar requirements of the unimolecular mechanism (reaction 9) are clear. The rate-determining process consists of the separation of the expelled group with the electrons of the C X bond, and it should be facilitated unconditionally by electron release to the reaction centre. Consistently, it is ...

Notes: [Auszug] DURING an investigation of the nervous control of respiratory movements in the water beetle Dytiscus marginalia, electrophysiological evidence has been obtained for the existence of sense organs responsive to these movements. The abdominal movements consist of an active expiratory phase in which ...

Notes: [Auszug] Hey, Parsons and Phillips1 suggested that the asymmetry they had observed might be due to radio absorption in ionized solar corpuscular streams, as the rotation of the sun causes the envelopes of such streams to drift eastwards relative to the active solar regions from which they emanate. They also ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE radiation-widths of levels of low excitation can, if sufficiently narrow (~ 10~6 eV.), be determined directly from the life-time of the state. The vast majority of levels, however, have much greater widths, which are often obtainable from properties of the nuclear reactions in which the levels ...

Notes: [Auszug] Recordings of the intensity of the discrete radio sources in Cygnus and Cassiopeia were made between June and November 1953. Ionospheric conditions frequently caused violent amplitude fluctuations, and at times there were not only severe decreases of intensity but also increases from the ...

Notes: [Auszug] In 1911, Einstein2 corrected an error in differentiation that had occurred in his first paper, and so obtained the well-known expression : = 1? + 2'5C. expressing the dissipation of heat caused by the presence of the spheres. The corrected expression, combined with the other two now gives ...

Notes: [Auszug] A systematic survey of threshold reaction cross-sections for fission neutrons was carried out by Hughes, Spatz and Goldstein2 in 1946. Notes: [Auszug] This communication presents the view that there are actually at least two classes of rearrangements among the examples formulated above ; that most of them are, indeed, electrophilic rearrangements ; but that the arylhydroxylamine rearrangement, in particular, exemplifies the opposite process, a ...
