Summary 1. It was shown that, under given conditions, the extent to which nickel and ferric cations are sorbed by cellulose oxidized with sodium periodate and sodium chlorite is equivalent to the carboxyl content. 2. It was shown that, in the case of nickel acetate, the dynamic exchange capacities of oxycelluloses (I) and (III) are 0.5 and 0.74, respectively, of the total exchange capacity. 3. It was suggested that the peculiar features of the absorption of ions by oxycellulose (III) must be attributed to the chelating positions of the carboxy groups in the glucose unit. 4. The variation of the strength of the bond between oxycellulose (III) and metal ion was demonstrated with nickel and ferric ions as examples. This variation can be applied in the separation of cations.
