Notes: Summary In cats with chronically implanted electrodes, hippocampus and amygdala consistently showed spike discharges immediately after relatively low doses of total body x-irradiation (400 r) and reticular arousal thresholds were transitorily decreased. Thalamic recruiting thresholds increased later, while hippocampal seizure thresholds remained practically unaltered. Experiments with lower doses are in progress.

Notes: Summary An apparatus and a method are described that are based on a.c. null balance, which may be used for measuring 50 Hz currents of 2 × 10−11 A, or higher, with an accuracy of 0.1 per cent. The apparatus, which has been applied in experiments of different kind in our laboratory, is fed by a.c. line voltage. The main part is an a.c. amplifier with 30 MΩ input impedance, provided with a variable phase-shift. The amplifier is essentially, followed by a synchronous meter and is connected to a stabilized and calibrated 50 Hz reference source. The design, adjustment and performance of the apparatus are treated in §§ 1–3. Also the use of a linear rectifying meter instead of a synchronous meter, in direct-reading measurements, is discussed with respect to the signal-to-noise ratio. In § 4 the application of the described a.c. null balance method to photometry will be reviewed, with special regard to the attainable accuracy.

Notes: Summary Test solutions containing Li, Ca, Sr and Ba salts were sprayed into a flame photometer of simple design. The line-to-background ratio, the detection limit, interference effects, filter leakage and the form of the standard graphs were investigated. With each element readings were made with a series of interference filters of varying central wavelength and with an acetylene-air and propane-air flame, for comparison. From the results obtained conclusions can be drawn concerning the optimum measuring conditions to be used in routine analysis. Also an approach is made to the quantitative understanding of the form of the standard graphs with Ca, Sr and Ba, in the lower concentration range, based on the underlying ionization and dissociation processes. A characteristic saturation effect of the photomultiplier tube used is reported.

Notes: Summary The dead timeΤ of a Geiger counter can be completely overcome by operating the counter with a pulsed voltage. The theory of the method is developed for two modes of measurement and simple formulae are derived. Even withΤ=100Μs, accurate counting is possible when the rate of arrival of particles at the counter is as high as 106/s.

Notes: Summary A non-dispersive, optic-electrical filter instrument is described, which combines high spectral resolving power (∼0.1 Å) with large luminosity, at wavelengths which are of interest in spectrochemistry. The method is based on the balance of two light-beams emitted by a source S, which are periodically chopped in opposite phase. By placing a flame A containing vapour of some element into one light-beam, this balance is made critical for wavelengths that are specifically absorbed by this vapour. The applicability of a self-radiating flame as absorber could be realized by making use of an a.c. measuring device and by choosing a suitable position of the light-chopper. The described test experiments, which were made with a provisional instrument, prove the applicability of this method, especially in flame photometry.
