Summary An improvement is described in the previously published method for the microanalysis of oxide inclusions in steel. A sample of 200 to 400 μg furnishes the following determinations in the order: silica by fuming with hydrofluoric acid and noting the loss in weight; the residue is decomposed, dissolved, the iron removed by extraction with diethyl ether and measured photometrically with o-phenanthroline; manganese is then extracted with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate/chloroform and determined photometrically as carbamate; aluminium extracted with 8-hydroxyquinoline/chloroform and determined photometrically as oxinate. Four separate samples require 5.5 to 7.5 hours. The relative error is ±5 to 10%.
