Notes: Summary 1. An investigation was made of the stabilities of the acetal link in methyl α-glucoside (II), methyl β -cellobioside (III), and cellulose (IV) with respect to 97% acetic acid at room temperature. 2. Under these conditions the acetal link is stable in compounds (II) and (III). 3. It was found that there is a fall in the degree of polymerization of cellulose under these conditions, which indicates either the presence of nonglucoside glucose links, or the presence of weakened glucosidic glucose links in the cellulose macromolecule.

Notes: Summary 1. It was shown that in the thermal decomposition of cellulose the yield of levoglucosan may attain 60% or higher. 2. In the thermal decomposition of cellulose, hydrolysis, oxidation, and dehydration processes are side reactions. 3. In the thermal decomposition of cellulose in a vacuum the main direction of reaction is breakdown at 1,4 glucoside links int elementary fragments that isomerize into levoglucosan.

Notes: Summary 1. The oxidation of cellulose by nitrogen dioxide does not consist in the specific oxidation of primary alcohol groups, this reaction being always accompanied by the oxidation of secondary alcohol groups. 2. In celluloses oxidized with nitrogen dioxide, most of the carboxyl groups formed are in the 6-positions of the glucose residues. Some of the carboxyl groups are formed as a result of oxidative scission of the pyran ring. 3. Celluloses oxidized with nitrogen dioxide contain many carbonyl groups (as many as 10 groups per 100 glucose residues, the number of carboxyl groups then being 65). In freshly oxidized preparations most of the carbonyls are keto groups, and the content of aldehyde groups is low (not more than 0.3 per 100 glucose residues). 4. Celluloses oxidized with nitrogen dioxide do not contain peroxy and carbonic ester groupings. All of the nitrogen in these oxycelluloses is present in the form of nitric ester groupings. 5. The experimental material obtained supports the suggestion that oxidation proceeds with intermediate formation of nitric esters. it is necessary to assume that ester formation and the oxidative hydrolysis of the product can occur not only at primary OH groups, but also at secondary OH groups in the glucose residues of the cellulose macromolecule.

Notes: Summary 1. It was shown that, under given conditions, the extent to which nickel and ferric cations are sorbed by cellulose oxidized with sodium periodate and sodium chlorite is equivalent to the carboxyl content. 2. It was shown that, in the case of nickel acetate, the dynamic exchange capacities of oxycelluloses (I) and (III) are 0.5 and 0.74, respectively, of the total exchange capacity. 3. It was suggested that the peculiar features of the absorption of ions by oxycellulose (III) must be attributed to the chelating positions of the carboxy groups in the glucose unit. 4. The variation of the strength of the bond between oxycellulose (III) and metal ion was demonstrated with nickel and ferric ions as examples. This variation can be applied in the separation of cations.

Notes: Summary 1. Previously undescribed copolymers of butadiene and vinyl formate were prepared. A description was given of the conditions required for the mass copolymerization of these monomers in presence of an oxidation-reduction system consisting of dihydroxymaleic acid, cumene hydroperoxide, and iron naphthenate or stearate. 2. It was shown that the nature of the radical attached to iron affects the rate of copolymerization and the yield of copolymer. It was shown that the use of iron stearate instead of the naphthenate increases the conversion almost fivefold (from 16.21 to 88.2%). 3. Fractionation of the copolymer gave fractions differing in molecular weight but not in chemical composition. 4. It was shown that the formic ester groups of the copolymer can be hydrolyzed, and the effect of free hydroxy groups on certain properties of the polymer was characterized. 5. The copolymerization constants for reaction of butadiene with vinyl formate were determined.

Notes: Summary 1. Numerous investigations by various authors have confirmed our early results on the high value of the molecular weight of cellulose. 2. The macromolecular chains of isolated celluloses contain weak links due to the presence of nonglucose units (in the case of wood celluloses) and of glucose units having carboxy and aldehyde groups in positions 2, 3, and 6 which are responsible for various chemical transformations of cellulose in various media. 3. It has been shown that the oxidation reactions of cellulose with oxides of nitrogen, periodic acid, and sodium chlorite are not specific, and a more accurate picture of the chemical transformations of oxycelluloses in acid and alkaline media has been obtained. 4. New ways in which cellulose may be modified have been indicated, and possible applications of oxycelluloses have been pointed out. 5. The complex chemistry of the thermal degradation of cellulose has been somewhat clarified.
