Summary A method is given for the simple, rapid, and quantitative separation of microgram quantities of uranium from those elements which, following a single ether extraction from nitric acid solution, may enter the extract along with the uranium. In contrast to the other elements concerned, the uranyl ion forms a negatively charged acetate complex in the ph range 4.25–5.25. This product is retained by the strongly basic anion exchanger Amberlite I. R. A.-400 (Ac−) and can readily be eluted again by means of 0.8N hydrochloric acid. The uranium in the eluate is finally determined by an improved form of the polarographic method announced byHarris andKolthoff involving the catalytic nitrate wave. A study was made of the characteristics of the polarographic wave of microgram amounts of uranium in nitrate-containing added electrolytes as function of nitrate, hydrogen, and salt concentrations. After removing all polyvalent cations by means of the ion exchanger Amberlite I. R. A.-400, the findings permitted a rapid and accurate determination of quantities of uranium between 0.1 and 10 μg in rocks and natural waters. On the basis of test solutions and minerals, it was found that the polarographic determination of uranium, following previous accumulation of the uranium by a single extraction with ether and subsequent ion exchange, is more accurate and particularly consumes far less time than the method previously employed which made use of the sodium fluoride bead (after preliminary accumulation of the uranium by extracting twice with ether).
