Abstract Cover formations in general rest on their basements with marked unconformity, indicating a period of profound erosion. Any evidence of events which might have taken place during this hiatus is commonly considered by many workers to be lacking. Nevertheless, such evidence does exist, and can still be recognised in the various records which the events have left behind. These records are summarized, and their significance discussed. The greater part of the erosion that basements have suffered was rapid, and it took place over a relatively short time-interval. It checked the development of metamorphism and ultrametamorphism, and at the same time may have a marked influence on the variability of the final metamorphic products. The rapid upward movements of the basements must also have affected many structural features: early structures could develop involutions (“encapuchonnements”), axes and other linear structures might be twisted, and gravitational sliding may have occured and left its mark. These and other general deductions are discussed.
