Notes: Synopsis Derivatives with the general formula $$(Na_x M_{1 - x/2} PO_3 )_n ,$$ wherex is 2/3, 1/2; and 1/3 and M is Ca, Ba, Zn, Cu or Pb, have been synthesised. The extent of reaction has been studied thermogravimetrically. The number average $$(\bar M_n )$$ and viscosity average $$(\bar M_w )$$ molecular weights of these compounds have been determined. The specific conductance has been plotted against equivalent concentration, which shows a slight bend at lower concentration. Equivalent conductivity against square root of equivalent concentration $$\sqrt c $$ curves show a sharp rise at lower dilution. This is explained due to the association of counter-ions with poly-anions because of high charge density around the latter. The plots of A vs $$\sqrt c $$ can be reduced to linear ones on a log-log scale.

Notes: Derivatives with the formulas [Na4Ca(PO3)6]n, [Na4Ba(PO3)6]n, and [Na4Zn(PO3)6]n have been prepared by heating together mixtures of NaH2PO4.2H2O, CaO (or Ba(OH)2.-8H2O or ZnO), and (NH4)2HPO4 in the molar ratios of 4:1:2 at 700 and 800°C. for 1 hr. The number-average molecular weights of these derivatives have been measured by the endgroup titration method. Their conductance has been measured in aqueous solution of varying concentration, and their properties compared with those of Graham's salt (NaPO3)n prepared under similar conditions.

Notes: The complexation reaction of the polymeric metaphosphate ions has been studied with copper, calcium, barium, zinc, lead, and iron ions by physicochemical measurements indicating the formation of complex derivatives of the type (NaxM1-x/aPO3)n where a is the valency of the metal ion complexed. It has been possible to synthesize a large number of derivatives for the first time by the reactions of the following type: The progress of the reaction has been studied on a Stanton Thermogravimetric balance and the properties (composition, viscosity, molecular weight, and conductivity) of the transparent glassy complex metaphosphates have been studied in detail throwing fresh light on Graham's salt itself as well as these new derivatives.

Notes: Hermans' orientation factor can be evaluated only when the diatropic and paratropic interferences arise from planes which form an orthogonal set. This is only approximately satisfied in case of both cellulose I and cellulose II. In the present communication an exact expression has been derived which can be evaluated from x-ray measurements, angle between face normals of paratropic interferences, and the optical constants.

Notes: The polymerization of styrene using γ,γ′-azo (γ-cyano-n-valeric acid) as initiator was studied at 100°C. in DMF solution. It has been shown that the rate of polymerization is proportional to the square root of the initiator concentration and 3/2 power of the monomer concentration. The chain-transfer constant for styrene radicals and dimethylformamide has been determined at 100°C., with the result Cs = 1.08 · 10-4.Several samples of polystyrene of low molecular weights (below the osmotic pressure range) were prepared under a variety of conditions in the presence of this initiator. Their molecular weights were determined by viscosity and end group titrations, both for fractionated and unfractionated samples. The results are compared with those obtained by other workers.

Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate, using γ,γ′-azo-(γ-cyano-n-valeric acid) as initiator has been studied at 90 and 100°C. in dimethyl formamide solution. Several samples of polymethyl methacrylate of low molecular weight (below the osmotic pressure range) have been prepared under a variety of conditions in the presence of the above initiator. The molecular weights of the samples have been determined by viscosity and end-group titrations, both for fractionated and unfractionated samples. The results are then compared with those obtained by other authors. It was found that for unfractionated polymer samples equation: M̄n = 1.99·105·[η]1.46 of EVANS et al. seems to hold good. For sharp fractions, the relationship: M̄n = 2.81·105[η]1.32 of the same authors appears to give reasonably good correspondence.
