Cadmium dimethyl reacts with 1,4-dioxane, N,N,N′,N′,-tetraethylethylenediamine, 2,2′-bipyridyl and 1,10-phenanthroline forming crystalline chelate compounds with one donor molecule attached to one molecule of cadmium dimethyl. These compounds are more stable against atmospherie oxygen than cadmium dimethyl itself.Univalent donor molecules like tetramethylene oxide or pyridine yield liquid 1:1 complexes which dissoziate into the components already at low temperatures; it is difficult, therefore, to isolate these compounds in a stoichiometric composition.

Cadmiumdimethyl bindet mit 1,4-Dioxan und N,N,N′,N′,-Tetraäthyläthylendiamin, 2,2′,-Dipyridyl und 1,10-Phenanthrolin kristalline Chelatverbindungen mit einer Ligandenmolekel pro Molekel Cadmiumdimethyl. Die Luftempfindlichkeit dieser Verbindungen ist wesentlich geringer als die des reinen Cadmiumdimethyls.Stärkere einwertige Liganden wie Tetrahydrofuran und Pyridin neigen zur Bildung von flüssigen 1:1-Addukten. Diese Komplexverbindungen spalten sich beim Erwärmen weitgehend in ihre Komponenten und lassen sich daher nur schwer in stöchiometrischer Zusammensetzung erhalten.
