Summary 1. An investigation was made of the infrared spectra of one organocyclotrisiloxane and ten organocyclotetrasiloxanes containing ethyl, ethoxy, butoxy, phenyl, vinyl, and nitrile groups. 2. In all the cyclic organotetrasiloxanes studied the valence vibration of Si-O-Si appeared in the region of 1080–1089 cm−1 as a broad very intense band, but in cyclic organotrisiloxanes the corresponding band appeared at 1020 cm−1. The intensity of the Si-O-Si band was lower for trimers than for tetramers. 3. It was found that in Si-CH=CH2 grouping the silicon atom has a powerful effect on the vinyl group which is expressed in the displacement of the C=C band to 1594 cm−1. The effect of the silicon atom on the C=C bond is greater than the effect of a conjugated phenyl ring and commensurate with the effect of conjugated C=C orC=O bonds.
