Notes: Summary In rats with experimental hypothalamic adiposity absolute O2 consumption increases, but declines if taken as the rate per 1 cm2 of the body surface. In the period of rising weight gain the respiratory quotient exceeds 1; the same is observed in a number of animals after subcutaneous glucose injection. This indicates that deposition of fat in hypothalamic adiposity is connected with augmented conversion of carbohydrates into fats; this process may occur in adipose rats even without hyperphagia. Cystein administration does not exert any specific dynamic action in marked hypothalamic adiposity.

Notes: Summary The histochemical method (silver impregnation according to Giroud and Leblond for ascorbic acid. sudan staining of lipoids) and polarization microscopy were used for studying the effect of a single exposure to microwave radiation on the hormonal activity of the adrenal cortex. A distinct and statistically significant change in hormonal activity was noted in the adrenal cortex; this occurred within the first 1.5–2 weeks after the effect of the microwave radiation manifested itself in an initial intensified discharge of functionally active substances into the blood stream and their subsequent accumulation in the adrenal cortex cells.

Notes: Summary Subject to study was the effect produced by adiposin, a hypophyseal preparation obtained by S. M. Leites and A. A. Molchanova, on the lipolytic activity of adipose tissue and the NEFA content in the rat serum. In experiments in vitro and in vivo a demonstration was made of the activating effect produced by low doses of adiposin (0.01 mg in vitro and 1.5 mg—in vivo) on NEFA exit from the adipose tissue with a parallel considerable rise in their content in the serum. Adiposin also retards glucose inhibition of lipolysis in the adipose tissue. It is supposed that adipokinetic affect of adiposin is due not only to activation of lipolysis by it in the adipose tissue, but also to the triglyceride synthesis in the latter.

Notes: Summary Histochemical analysis of polysaccharides was done in internal organs in experimental hypothyroidism. A considerable rise in glycogen content was noted in the parenchyma of the liver and heart; glycogen distribution in the cardiac muscle fibers was uneven, in the form of separate large foci, surrounded by mucoid edema of the stroma. In the interstitial tissue of internal organs accumulation of acid mucopolysaccharides is observed, the composition of which varies in different organs (in the heart — preponderantly hyaluronic acid, in the kidneys — chondroitinsulfate C, etc). Mucoproteid accumulation is noted in the blood plasma and lymph in experimental hypothyroidism cases.

Notes: Summary Lipid metabolism and lipolytic enzyme activity were studied histochemically in old albino rats. The old animals differed from those under one year of age in showing a marked rise in the lipid content of the organs and tissues and a peculiar distribution and qualitative composition of the deposited lipids. The considerable fall with age of lipolytic activity which we observed in all tissues investigated is the probable cause of the physiological lipidosis of the viscera of old animals.

Notes: Summary Biochemical and histochemical methods were used to study the changes occurring in the lipolytic activity of the aorta in albino rats fed on cholesterol and butter and in combining this diet with repeated “stress” conditions. The histochemical method was used to investigate the deposition of lipids in the root of the aorta, aortic valves and the coronary arteries. The cholesterol-fat diet and to a greater extent its combination with “stress” was accompanied by a reduction of lipolytic activity of the aorta. A connection was noted between the fall of lipolytic activity in the aorta and its lipoidosis.

Notes: Summary In connection with the favorable effect exerted on radiation injuries by substances capable of stimulating proliferation, including the naphtalane-oil extract (NOE) it was deemed interesting to study the action of the latter in radiation injuries of the skin provoked by α-rays. As shown experimentally, an acceleration of radiation reaction of epidermis and of its recovery occurred, consequent upon application of NOE to the rabbit's skin directly after its local irradiation with α-rays of thorium fission. Rabbit skin irradiated in 2.5 days and later after NOE application gave practically no radiation reaction, α-irradiation directly or within the first 2 days after NOE application to the skin provoked an accelerated radiation reaction and recovery.

Notes: Summary 1. Raman and IR spectra of silicon, germanium, and tin methacrylates were obtained. 2. The -o-m-(M-C, Si, or Ge) bond is covalent in carbon, silicon, and germanium methacrylates; tin methacrylates are ionic compounds. 3. Triethylgermanium methacrylate polymerizes, when exposed to radiation from a quartz mercury vapor lamp, by means of C=C bonds, possibly with simultaneous interchain reaction between carbonyl groups and metal atoms.

Notes: Summary The positige inductive effect of the pentamethyldisilanyl group (CH3)3SiSi(CH3)2 and the election-acceptor effect of its pπ-dπ bond with an aromatic ring are appreciably greater than the analogous effects of the trimethylsilyl group (CH3 3Si, which gives ground for the postulation of the presence of a pπ-dπ-d1π bond in the fragment Csp 2-Si-Si.

Notes: Summary 1. The effect of substituents on the frequencies and intensities of Raman spectrum lines has been studied in the compounds X3M-CH2-CH=CH2, where M=Si, Ge, and X=F, Cl, Br. 2. Whereas the frequencies increase in the normal electronegativity series CH3 〈 Br 〈 Cl 〈 F, the intensities increase in the series F 〈 Cl 〈 CH3 〈 Br. 3. The concept of a “barrier effect” at the silicon and germanium atoms in the compounds studied has been refined.
