Abstract The numberN Kα dir (produced) ofKα-photons produced by electron-bombardment in a thick target of copper per incident electron has been measured absolutely with the Ross-filter method and relatively with the crystal-spectrometer method in the energy-region up to the four times theK-ionization energyE K . The result can be presented in the following empirical form:N Kα dir (produced) = 4π· ·(U 0−1) n with =0,65·10−4±5% andn=1,55±0,02 (U 0=E 0/E K 〈4). Out of this the numbern K ofK-ionizations per electron which is slowed down to the energyE K within the target, has been evaluated. The computation ofn K out of the elementary process by usingBethe's non-relativistic formulae for totalK-ionization cross sectionQ K and energy loss —dE/ds is in full agreement with experiment in the region 2〈U 0〈4, if the constants inQ K are chosen as follows:B=4E K ,b = 0,35·2,26. The necessary correction factors as e.g. loss ofK-ionizations by rediffusion of electrons and portion of indirectly producedKα-radiation are determined for copper quantitatively.
