Summary When ether is rapidly evaporated in a micro test tube, there remain behind ether vapors which yield a peroxide at 200° C in contact with air. If this autoxidation, which can be revealed by color reactions with appropriate indicator papers, is conducted on filter paper impregnated with copper acetate-benzidine acetate, the paper turns blue. This result is due to the oxidation of the benzidine to its meriquinoid oxidation product, the oxidation being catalytically hastened by the ether peroxide. This catalysis involves the initiation and constant repetition of plausible partial reactions. The catalytic reaction can be conducted within the spot test techniques for the chemical detection of ether. When mixed with chloroform, 40μg of ether were revealed. The test fails in mixtures of ether with benzene, toluene, carbon disulfide, or petroleum ether. However, it succeeds if small amounts of chloroform or carbon tetrachloride are added to such mixtures. This result is probably to be attributed to a liberation of chlorine by the action of the ether peroxide.
