    Notes: The radiosensitizing activity of a series of naphthalene derivatives against Streptococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli was examined to determine the essential molecular substituents and configurations required for effective sensitization when the compounds and organisms were irradiated with Co60 gamma rays. In general, compounds with hydroxyl or amino groups in the ortho and para positions, such as 1-amino-2-naphthol and 4-amino-1-naphthol, were particularly effective sensitizers for S. faecalis irradiated in air or in anoxia. E. coli was particularly sensitive to 4-amino-1-naphthol and 5-amino-1-naphthol when irradiated in anoxia, and less sensitive in air. Both organisms displayed marked sensitivity when irradiated with iodoacetic acid in air and in anoxia. It was determined that the bacteria and chemicals must be irradiated together for maximal radiosensitization to take place, for it was possible to almost eliminate radiosensitization by washing the cell-chemical suspension prior to irradiation.

    Notes: Spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger and B. stearothermophilus irradiated in nitrogen were killed in greater numbers in the presence of vitamin KC, 4.amino-1-naphthol, or 2-amino-1-naphthol than when irradiated without chemical. When irradiation was performed in air, the chemicals were without effect, or even protective. Spores of both organisms were particularly sensitive when irradiated in nitrogen with 4-amino-1-naphthol.Irradiation of Micrococcus radiodurans in anoxia with these naphthol derivatives gave losses in cell recovery that resulted in much lower populations than could he attributed to chemical toxicity per se. These chemicals were found to be toxic to a yeast that had been isolated from frozen orange juice when the preparations were in buffer of pH 7.0 and 4.0. When the yeast was suspended in orange juice, on the other hand, the chemicals were neither toxic nor radiosensitizers. Milk was also found to interfere with the bactericidal and radiolethal activities of these chemicals. Sulfhydryl compounds were shown to decrease radiolethal action.

    Notes: The gritty material obtained by filtering commercial maple sirup was analyzed to determine its composition and to relate its composition to the amount of sugar sand deposited to determine the factors responsible for the formation of sugar sand. The samples, taken over a two-year period, contained calcium, malic acid, and undetermined material (probably silica) as the major constituents. The calcium, malic acid, and calcium malate content gave highly significant positive correlations with the amount of sugar sand formed, whereas the percentage of undetermined material gave a negative correlation. There was also evidence that the malic acid content was more critical in the formation of sugar sand than the calcium content. Highly significant negative correlations were obtained between the percent sugar sand deposited and the iron, copper, and boron content. Further, these constituents also gave highly significant negative correlations when compared with the calcium content of the sugar sand. The presence of potassium, magnesium, and molybdenum appeared to have little effect on the formation of sugar sand. The nonvolatile organic acids present in sugar sand were determined by paper chromatography. Results showed that sugar sand contains malic, citric, succinic, fumaric, and three unidentified organic acids.

    Notes: Frozen fish fillets from commercial outlets representing 26 producers were analyzed for total aerobic plate counts, coliform organisms, fecal streptococci, and eoagulase-positive staphylococci. Total plate counts ranged from 1300 to 1,800,000/g; 72% were below 200,000/g. Coliform counts were low (0–190/ g). Only 14 of the 78 samples contained coliform organisms. Presumptive fecal streptococci counts were usually appreciably higher than coliform counts, and in only a few samples were none found. The highest count noted was 19,000 organisms/g. Coagulase-positive staphylococci were present in 25 Samples, representing 17 producers. Unlike in a previous study on frozen shrimp, half of the egg-yolk-positive micrococci were not coagulase-positive.

    Notes: Water-bearing properties of crystalline rocks are dependent on the occurrence of joints and faults and the extent of weathering. Interstitial openings caused by weathering are mostly at depths of less than 100 feet. Joints are less abundant and openings along joint planes are smaller as depth increases. Openings along fault surfaces also tend to close with depth. These geological observations which indicate a decrease in rock permeability with depth are verified by a study of well yields and water-injection tests. Mean yields per foot of well are 0.23 to 0.30 gpm at 100 feet but only 0.013 to 0.04 gpm at 1000 feet. Mean injection rates per foot of drill hole under 100 psi pressure are 0.11 to 0.4 gpm at 100 feet but only 0.014 to 0.038 gpm at 1000 feet. Median values of both well yields and injection rates are from one-half to one-third of the mean values. Geologic structure is more important than rock type in determining yields and injection rates. The decrease in rock permeability with depth indicates an increase in the unit cost of water with depth. The optimum depth of a well is, therefore, determined largely by economic factors. Unless geologic factors are favorable, wells in crystalline rocks should be less than 600 feet deep. In general, domestic wells should be less than 150 to 250 feet deep.
