Notizen: The effects of temperature, wax emulsion coating, hormone treatment, and their combination on the storage behavior of Nagpur and Darjeeling mandarins were investigated. Use of 2,4-D with wax coating was more effective in prolonging the storage life of both varieties at any storage temperature than either wax coating or 2,4-D used separately. The storage lives of Nagpur and Darjeeling oranges were respectively 50 and 35 days at normal temperature (50–85°F) and 90 and 75 days at 40 ± 1°F when treated with 2,4-D (1000 ppm for Nagpur and 2000 ppm for Darjeeling varieties) followed by wax coating. Wax-coated Nagpur and Darjeeling oranges were in a good marketable condition for 30 and 22 days, respectively, at room temperature, whereas the respective controls remained marketable for only 10 and 7 days. At 40 ± 1°F, storage lives were respectively 60 and 52 days for Nagpur and Darjeeling oranges coated with wax, and 40 and 25 days for their respective controls. Hormone-treated fruits, like the controls, lost their marketable appearance through considerable desiccation, pitting, and shriveling. Loss in weight and spoilage due to fungal attack and rind blemishes were least in fruits treated with 2,4-D followed by wax coating in both varieties and each storage temperature. Pulp-to-peel ratio, reducing sugar, sucrose, total sugar, sugar-to-acid ratio, pH value, and specific gravity in juice increased, whereas vitamin C content and titratable acidity decreased, during storage in all treatments. No off flavor was produced in any case.

Notizen: A number of isolates of the cellular slime mold, Acrasis rosea, differed from each other in the range of microorganisms on which they could grow and fruit. In a test for the possible occurrence of sexual reproduction and genetic recombination, two of the most widely divergent of these physiological races were studied further. Mixed colonies were obtained in agar plate cultures of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, a yeast utilized by both. When spores from mature fruiting bodies or amoebae migrating out from the mixed colonies were isolated singly, regrown on Rhodotorula, and tested on a critical spectrum of food microorganisms, about 3-4% proved to be distinct from the original two strains. Although some of these new types remained stable for several transfers, they eventually reverted to one or both of the parental types. The possibilities of explaining the neotypes on the basis of diploidy, heterokaryosis, or mixed cytoplasmic effects are discussed. The occurrence of cell anastomoses and occasional binucleate cells favors the latter two possibilities.

Notizen: 3-Amino-l,2,4-triazole (AT) stops multiplication of the photosynthetic protists, Ochromonas danica, O. mal-hamensis, Euglena gracilis var. bacillaris. and Rhodopseudo-monas palustris; it also stops growth of the multicellular plant, Spirodela oligorhiza. O. danica and S. oligorhiza are the most sensitive. AT is about equally inhibitory to algal flagellates grown in the light or dark. Porphyrin biosynthesis is suggested as the probable site of inhibition by AT. Both AT and streptomycin (SM) bleach all the above organisms. Bleaching is permanent only in SM-bleached E. gracilis; all the other organisms become fully pigmented when placed in inhibitor-free media. The uniqueness of the SM-bkaching of E. gracilis is discussed.

Notizen: In view of the paucity of information on the effect of grassland irrigation on livestock production, a grazing experiment was made in 1960 and 1961 in which the response to irrigation was measured at two dairy-cow stocking rates. The method and herbage results are described. The increases in herbage utilized as a result of irrigation were comparable with the results of cutting experiments, averaging 342 lb of ash-free organic matter per acre-inch of water used. Irrigation also increased the uniformity of herbage production.

Notizen: The dairy-cow results are presented from an experiment in which the response to grass irrigation was measured at two stocking rates. The method and herbage results have already been described (1).Over two years, with an average application rate of 5·5 in of water per year, the main effect of irrigation was to increase the number of grazing days obtained by 35%. Neither yield per cow nor milk quality was significantly affected by the treatments. The data emphasize the importance of high stocking rates for the full exploitation of irrigation. The practical implications of the results are discussed; they suggest that in the right circumstances of herd potential and grassland management, irrigation for milk production can be highly profitable.

Notizen: Spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger and B. stearothermophilus irradiated in nitrogen were killed in greater numbers in the presence of vitamin KC, 4.amino-1-naphthol, or 2-amino-1-naphthol than when irradiated without chemical. When irradiation was performed in air, the chemicals were without effect, or even protective. Spores of both organisms were particularly sensitive when irradiated in nitrogen with 4-amino-1-naphthol.Irradiation of Micrococcus radiodurans in anoxia with these naphthol derivatives gave losses in cell recovery that resulted in much lower populations than could he attributed to chemical toxicity per se. These chemicals were found to be toxic to a yeast that had been isolated from frozen orange juice when the preparations were in buffer of pH 7.0 and 4.0. When the yeast was suspended in orange juice, on the other hand, the chemicals were neither toxic nor radiosensitizers. Milk was also found to interfere with the bactericidal and radiolethal activities of these chemicals. Sulfhydryl compounds were shown to decrease radiolethal action.
