Notes: Room-temperature photoluminescence decay time measurements in heavily doped GaAs:C-layers designed as base layers for heterojunction bipolar transistors are reported. These measurements provide access to nonequilibrium minority carrier lifetimes that determine the current gains of those devices. By systematically studying transient luminescence spectra over a wide range of excitation densities between 1013 and 1018 cm−3, we demonstrate the importance of carrier trapping processes at low excitation densities. Optimized excitation conditions that achieve trap saturation but also avoid stimulated emission are found for densities of (1–3)×1017 cm−3/pulse. Detection is limited to a spectral window well above the energy gap (beyond 1.5 eV). Values for both Auger and radiative recombination coefficients are given. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Live oysters were inoculated with 01 V. cholerae or non-01 V. cholerae and the liquor from the oysters was spread onto thiosulfate citrate bile salts agar plates. After incubation the colonies with yellow centers were picked and streaked onto sheep blood agar plates. Biochemical tests were performed on all colonies. Isolates exhibiting characteristic V. cholerae reactions were checked for serological identity and inoculated into a vibrio medium. After incubation, the isolates were further analyzed for lactic and succinic acids by gas-liquid chromatography. Peak height ratios of lactic/succinic acid provided a testing parameter to distinguish all isolates of 01 V. cholerae from non-01 V. cholerae isolates recovered from the oysters.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of intravenously infused hexobarbital was studied in 10 patients with intrahepatic cholestasis and in 9 with extrahepatic biliary obstruction. The results were compared with those obtained in 16 healthy young volunteers and 5 older patients with normal liver function. After infusion, the plasma concentrations showed a rapid initial decline (α-phase) and subsequently a slower decrease (β-phase). The half-life of a latter phase was 323±84 min in the healthy group, 357±151 min in the patients with intrahepatic cholestasis and 344±115 min in the group with biliary obstruction; the clearances were 3.41±0.90, 4.08±1.95 and 3.81±1.97 ml×min−1×kg−1, respectively. The differences were not statistically significant. The mean volume of the central compartment of distribution and the steady state volume of distribution were not significantly different. In two patients hexobarbital clearance during cholestasis was greater than after it had subsided. After treatment of 11 patients with cholestasis with drug metabolism-inducing agents (phenobarbital, rifampicin or phenytoin), the half-life of hexobarbital was significantly shortened and the mean value of hexobarbital clearance was more than doubled.

Notes: Abstract The development of a new methodology for the construction of very efficient flow cells for mercury detection by potentiometric stripping analysis, employing the thin gold layer of recordable CDs as working ¶electrode is reported. This new source of electrodes (CDtrodes) show very attractive performance, similar to that obtained with commercial gold electrodes, with superior versatility. The low cost of this new source of “gold electrodes” allows a frequent replacement of the electrode, avoiding cumbersome clean-up treatments. Various experimental parameters have been optimized to yield low detection limits (0.25 ng/mL of mercury for 5 min deposition at 0.3 V) and good precision (standard deviation of 1.9% was obtained for 15 repetitive measurements using 10 ng/mL of mercury). Standard curves were found to be linear over the range of 0.5–100 μg L–1 of mercury. The flow cells developed were used for the quantification of mercury in oceanic and tap water.

Notes: Abstract Force-free magnetic fields are defined by the equation rot $$\mathfrak{H} = \alpha \mathfrak{H}$$ . Making use of a moving Frenet coordinate system $$(\mathfrak{t} = tangential, \mathfrak{n} = normal, \mathfrak{b} = binormal unit vector)$$ we find the following general features of these fields: 1. grad $$\left| \mathfrak{H} \right|$$ is always parallel to the osculating plane of the $$\mathfrak{H}$$ -lines. 2. If the lines of force are rectilinear within a finite region of space, the component of grad $$\left| \mathfrak{H} \right|$$ along $$\left| \mathfrak{H} \right|$$ must be zero for a force-free field with rot . 3. The factor of proportionality $$\alpha = \alpha (\mathfrak{r})$$ and $$\mathfrak{H}$$ can be calculated by means of two equations involving only the direction of $$\left| \mathfrak{H} \right|$$ . For several models of force-free fields the effect of symmetry assumptions on $$\alpha = \alpha (\mathfrak{r})$$ is discussed using special coordinate systems. In the appendix it is pointed out that a particle drift arises in magnetic fields with .

Notes: Abstract The theory ofKraichnan is applied to quasi-stationary isotropic hydromagnetic turbulence. The average infinitesimal-impulse-response functionsg(k, τ), g m (k, τ) and the time-correlationsr(k, τ), r m (k, τ) are evaluated by the non-local direct-interaction approximation within the inertial range. For the range of ohmic but no viscous dissipation it is found that the magnetic energy spectrumE m (k) obeys aE(k)k −2-law in accordance with results ofGolitsyn andMoffatt.

Notes: Abstract The physical consequences emerging from a theory stated byKraichnan are considered with regard to isotropic hydromagnetic turbulence. This theory involves the direct-interaction approximation retaining the phase correlation within each triad of Fourier amplitudes. These interactions are suggested to be very important in hydromagnetic turbulence. Hydrodynamic as well as magnetic impulse-response function and time-correlation are unequivocally the same. This result suggests the existence of a universal equilibrium range. Within the inertial range the total energy spectrumE g (k)=E(k)+E m (k) obeys the same law as in hydrodynamic turbulenceE(k). The valueE m (k)≈E(k) corresponds roughly to maximum energy flux through this range. The magnetic energy flux decreases rapidly for eddies with larger wave-numbers within the range of ohmic ≫ viscous dissipation.
