Notes: Abstract Experiments on flow about simple bodies dropped in water tanks and shear layers in a water tunnel, were performed to study the application of the schlieren technique to water flow. It is verified that small residual temperature differences initially present in the fluid, lead to substantial temperature gradients near the surface of the models. The resulting gradients in index of refraction make the schlieren system a viable method of flow visualization. Finally, the experimental results are explained by estimates based on the geometrical optics of the system.

    Notes: Summary Interpolatory quadrature formulae consist in replacing $$\int\limits_{ - 1}^1 {f(x) dx} $$ by $$\int\limits_{ - 1}^1 {p_f (x) dx} $$ wherep f denotes the interpolating polynomial off with respect to a certain knot setX. The remainder $$R(f) = \int\limits_{ - 1}^1 {(f(x) - p_f (x)) dx} $$ may in many cases be written as $$\int\limits_{ - 1}^1 {P_X (t)f^{(m)} (t) dt} $$ wherem=n resp. (n+1) forn even and odd, respectively. We determine the asymptotic behaviour of the Peano kernelP X (t) forn→∞ for the quadrature formulae of Filippi, Polya and Clenshaw-Curtis.

Notes: Abstract LetE n (f) denote the sup-norm-distance (with respect to the interval [−1, 1]) betweenf and the set of real polynomials of degree not exceedingn. For functions likee x , cosx, etc., the order ofE n (f) asn→∞ is well known. A typical result is $$2^{n - 1} n!E_{n - 1} (e^x ) = 1 + 1/4n + O(n^{ - 2} ).$$ It is shown in this paper that 2 n−1 n!E n−1(e x ) possesses a complete asymptotic expansion. This result is contained in the more general result that for a wide class of entire functions (containing, for example, exp(cx), coscx, and the Bessel functionsJ k (x)) the quantity $$2^{n - 1} n!E_{n - 1} \left( f \right)/f^{(n)} \left( 0 \right)$$ possesses a complete asymptotic expansion (providedn is always even (resp. always odd) iff is even (resp. odd)).

    Notes: Abstract LetX={x 1,x 2,..., n }εI=[−1, 1] and $$\varphi (x) = \prod\limits_{j = 1}^n {(x - x_j )} $$ . Forf∈C 1(I) definef* byf−p f =φf*, wherep f denotes the interpolation-polynomial off with respect toX. We state some properties of the operatorf →f*. In particular, we treat the case whereX consists of the zeros of the Chebyshev polynomialT n (x) and obtain ∥x m −p x m∥≤8eE n−1(x m ), whereE n−1(f) denotes the sup-norm distance fromf to the polynomials of degree less thann. Finally we state a lower estimate forE n (f) that omits theassumptionf (n+1)〉0 in a similar estimate of Meinardus.

Notes: Summary Streptomyces griseus TÜ 6 produces the sideromycin antibiotic albomycin δ2 in concentrations of approximately 1 mg/l. The production depends on the phosphate, iron, and ornithine concentrations in the medium. In optimized conditions, the production of albomycin could be increased to 25 mg/l in a fedbatch fermentation. Isolation and purification could be achieved by reversed-phase and size-exclusion chromatography and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The detection limit in quantitative determination of albomycin by HPLC was reached at a concentration of 1 μg/ml, which was 100 times less sensitive than biological testing, but this method, although time-consuming, was more selective.

Notes: Summary Preparative reversed-phase HPLC techniques for the separation of different hydrophilic fermentation products have been developed to shorten the comples and time-consuming isolation procedure. Separations were performed with low adsorptive reversed-phase packings and, additionally with strong acidic volatile modifiers to prevent adsorption, especially of the basic polypeptide antibotics epidermin and gallidermin on the stationary phases. The complex nature of the crude products required a particle size of 10 micron to separate the substances in a purity between 94% and 100%. The loading was limited to 100mg per injection on a 16 mm i.d. column, which corresponds to 4×10−3 g/g stationary phase.

Notes: Summary Neuraminic acid derivatives were separated easily by liquid chromatography on amino phases and using acetonitrile/15 mM phosphate buffer, pH 5.2 as mobile phase. Detection at 200 nm allowed determination of substances in the nanomole range. All solvent systems were used isocratically at room temperature. The separation did not depend on ion-exchange but on a partition mechanism, the solutes being separated according to their polarity. Thus, it was possible to optimize the resolution by varying the stationary phase and the composition of the eluent.

Description / Table of Contents: In the reaction of bisphenol-A-diglycidether with butane-1,4-diol at different ratios and catalysis by Mg(ClO4)2 only a maximum of 25% of the diol was found to be involved in the network. By thermogravimetric and dynamic-mechanical measurements it was proved that an excess of the diol acts as a nonreactive plasticizer in the network.

Durch thermogravimetrische und dynamisch-mechanische Messungen konnte bestätigt werden, daß überschüssiges Diol im Netzwerk als äußerer Weichmacher vorliegt.

Notes: Macromolecular chelating agents possessing high selectivity for rare metal ions have been synthetized. One of these, with the complexing group of glyoxal bis-2-mercaptoanil, is suitable for selective enrichment of gold from sea-water, while another is suitable for copper and uranium. - The enrichment of metallic ions in nature is discussed, taking hemocyanin as an example. - Both stereochemistry and isomerism, as well as cyclic conjugation during chelate formation, may influence the selectivity of complexing agents. The quasi-aromatic properties of chelates are discussed.
