Notes: We report the results obtained by x-ray, dc magnetization, ac magnetic susceptibility, microwave magnetic absorption, and electron paramagnetic resonance of the magnetic and superconductive properties of a large series of compounds of the form A2−x−yBxCeyCuO4 with A,B≡La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Y. For y=0 antiferromagnetic ordering of the copper moments is present at TN≈280 K for all the compounds formed in the tetragonal T' phase. Weak ferromagnetism (WF) associated with the canting of the copper moments is observed in all the compounds with a lattice parameter, a〈a0, a0≈3.91 A(ring), regardless of the rare-earth (R) ions present in the system. Superconductivity is observed only in the Ce-doped compounds with a(approximately-greater-than)a1, a1≈3.92 A(ring). The maximum onset temperature Tc is found for a≈3.95 A(ring). A phase diagram was obtained by varying the lattice parameter size as a function of A, B, and x. The correlation between the appearance of WF in the undoped compounds and the disappearance of superconductivity in the Ce-doped systems is discussed.

Notes: A pair potential for SiO2 proposed by Tsuneyuki, Tsukada, Aoki, and Matsui [Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 869 (1988)] is used to calculate a range of lattice dynamical properties of α-quartz. The potential energy of the structure is minimized, and the phonon frequencies are calculated for the structural parameters corresponding to the energy minimum. Frequencies calculated throughout the Brillouin zone are used to construct a frequency distribution function and the harmonic contributions to the thermodynamic functions are calculated. The coefficients of thermal expansion perpendicular and parallel to the c axis are calculated in a perturbative approximation. The expansion coefficient parallel to the c axis is found to be negative at low temperatures, in agreement with experiment. The elastic, dielectric, and piezoelectric constants are also calculated.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Two spectrally different cytochromes, referred to as cytochrome-552 and -556 were isolated from Euglena gracilis (Z) grown under different environmental conditions. Their presence or absence was followed during the dark↔ light adaptation, and their concentrations calculated from spectral data. These studies indicate that cytochrome-552 is directly dependent on chlorophyll and photosynthesis, whereas cytochrome-556 is found in all euglenas in a constant amount, and is not dependent on photosynthesis. These cytochromes were further purified to determine differences if any in their physical-chemical properties. The apparent molecular weight calculated from the sedimentation constants is of the order of 11,000 for cytochrome-552, and of the order of 13,000 for cytochrome-556. The electrophoretic mobility shows that cytochrome-552 migrates towards the anode with a mobility depending on pH from 2.5–7.9 cm2/volt/sec. The oxidation-reduction potential for cytochrome-552 is of the order of +0.38 volts, and for cytochrome-556 is of the order of +0.32 volts. These and the other data are compared to similar cytochromes that have been isolated from bacteria, algae, higher plants, and animal cells.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Three chlorotic Euglena substrains, PBZ-G4, SM-L1, and HB-G, were cultured in light and dark at 25° and 33–35°C. These permanently chlorophyll-less flagellates with different carotenoid distributions were originally derived from a photosynthetic stock culture. Astasia longa, a naturally pigmentless flagellate, and the ciliate Tetrahymena were also employed.None of the organisms were light-dependent at 25°C. At high temperatures only the Euglena substrains showed an effect of light on growth: PBZ-G4 was inhibited, as was the photosynthetic parent strain, whereas SM-L1 and HB-G were stimulated. In all three substrains, monster forms were produced at elevated temperatures; SM-L1 and HB-G were multinucleated, while PBZ-G4 had an enlarged, single nucleus. A small percentage of astasias became multinucleated and almost all the tetrahymenas became giants when cultured at high temperature but neither was affected by light.Light-temperature interactions in the nonphotosynthetic substrains of Euglena are, at present, unexplained. The results are discussed in relation to the carotenoid content and the possible site of interaction. The major factor inducing abnormality is thermal stress.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Euglena and Chlamydomonas were cultured in an organic medium in the dark and at several light intensities (15, 60 and 150 ft-c) at temperatures from 20d̀ to 35d̀C. Below 32.5d̀, growth of Euglena was independent of light. Chlamydomonas was light dependent at all temperatures where growth occurred; there was no growth in the dark, at 15 ft-c, or at temperatures above 32.5d̀. At 35d̀, growth of Euglena became inversely light dependent; the higher the illumination, the poorer the growth. Multinucleated, giant euglenas were found at 35d̀, a greater percent of abnormal cells appearing at the higher light intensities. Monsters were not observed in Chlamydomonas. To explain the growth-inhibiting, monster-inducing effect of elevated temperatures on Euglena, it is postulated that a dark-formed thermosensitive protein, essential for normal cell division, is denatured. Light may increase the effect of heat on chlorophyll and the chloroplast, possibly by being converted to intraplastidic heat through the plastid carotenoids, thus having some indirect synergistic role in the phenomenon.

Notes: Structural changes during isothermal sintering were studied for two base-catalyzed SiO2 aerogels with initial densities ρ1 = 122 and 256 kg m−3 by means of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The relevant structural parameters are the specific surface area, which is determined by the size of the compact primary particles, the mean diameter of the secondary particles, which represent the building blocks of the gel network, and finally the size of the macropores within the tenuous tertiary structure. The major finding of our investigations is the observation of two sintering processes with different time scales: a fast reduction of the size of the macropores and a slow increase in the diameter of the secondary particles as well as a relatively small decrease in the specific surface area. For the two samples investigated the changes of these parameters can be unequivocally correlated with the achieved density upon sintering – independent of the initial density.

Notes: [Auszug] THE idea of a basic unit of photosynthesis was first postulated some thirty years ago a,nd given a tentative dimension of 2,000-2,500 chlorophyll molecules on the basis of flashsaturation experiments1. Since that time, the basic unit, now referred to as a 'quantasome'2'3, has been variously ...

Notes: [Auszug] Most investigators in the field of photosynthesis research have been concerned with the activities of whole chloroplasts or mixtures of fragments from homogenized leaves. Thomas et al. recognized that fragments might have differing activities depending upon particle size and structural integrity1. ...
