Description: Intertidal inhabitants are exposed to the 24-hour solar day, and the 12.4 hour rising and falling of the tides. One or both of these cycles govern intertidal organisms’ behaviour and physiology, yet little is known about the molecular clockworks of tidal rhythmicity. Here, we show that the limpet Cellana rota exhibits robust tidally rhythmic behaviour and gene expression. We assembled a de-novo transcriptome, identifying novel tidal, along with known circadian clock genes. Surprisingly, most of the putative circadian clock genes, lack a typical rhythmicity. We identified numerous tidally rhythmic genes and pathways commonly associated with the circadian clock. We show that not only is the behaviour of an intertidal organism in tune with the tides, but so too are many of its genes and pathways. These findings highlight the plasticity of biological timekeeping in nature, strengthening the growing notion that the role of ‘canonical’ circadian clock genes may be more fluid than previously thought, as exhibited in an organism which has evolved in an environment where tidal oscillations are the dominant driving force.

Notes: [Auszug] We have studied twins on the surfaces of over a thousand crystals of natural, Ticonderoga graphite3-5. The crystals are frequently not perfect single crystals, but are composed of two or more flakes of highly perfect graphite twisted with respect to one another4. Almost invariably the twins were of ...

Notes: [Auszug] ONE form of the mass-energy cycle is shown in Fig. 1. Experimental support for the cycle comes from the fact that all known particles of lower energy may be created from a 10-BeV electron. The only particle interactions allowed by the cycle which have not been observed experimentally are the ...

Notes: [Auszug] TIME-resolved observations of the intensity distribution and wave-length of the output light from a ruby laser, operated well above threshold pumping power, have already been reported1. This article describes a more detailed investigation, by similar methods, of the near-field patterns and ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE levitron, first proposed by Colgate and Furth1, A is a toroidal version of the linear hardcore or inverse pinch discharge2,3. Notes: [Auszug] Suppose, as in the clusters of galaxies, the mass density of the environment is increased. Matter contained therein would favour the transformation of mass-energy so as to regain the ideal ratio. It may do so in two ways: (a) by direct conversion of mass into photons of radiation ; (6) by casting ...

Notes: [Auszug] The movement of the usual rack and pinion of the mechanical stage of a microscope, when enlarged 300-400 times on the film before projection, is so irregular owing to the backlash and the tremor of the operator's hand and the need for changing the grip that it is quite unacceptable. After a number ...
